Android 1.6 update now official for T-Mobile G1 and myTouch 3G
Donuts for everyone! Well, not everyone -- but as we'd heard, at least some G1 and myTouch 3G owners on T-Mobile USA are now being blessed with an official Android 1.6 build over the air. The carrier says it has "begun delivery," which we take means it's not all happening at once; that's the way the 1.5 rollout was handled, so it really doesn't come as a surprise. Keep checking for that update notification, folks.

Can anyone help me....i dont understand why they dont give it to everyone at the same time?
Because it takes significant bandwidth to push an X MB update over T-Mobile's network.. Be patient.
If they did that, you'd spend more than a week downloading it.
i still havent gotten an answer
what COMPELLING feature android offer that this doesnt? I know
google fanboys think the google sticker on the back of those shitty
phones is a feature, but it isnt. neither are the crappy apps it has,
nor is the stupid codenames for each update. "omg luolz cupcake guys@!
omg the cupcake update was revolutionary, it added ummm, cupcake. look
im namedropping the word cupcake multiple times to look like im an
android expert!!!!"
@Light Speed
Wow.....you must have an iPhone. Calm down.
Android users became annoying, instead of demanding the features we need they started to accept whatever Google throw at them even if it arrive late to the party.
Google should change Android name to slow dying turtle, By the time this OS become usable iphone OS would be at 6.0 or 7.0
Android = Biggest joke of this century, shame on anyone who support this lame useless OS and if you disagree with me that's fine because the majority of people agrees with me (Hence low sales for Android phones).
Ahhh iTards. What would the world be like if they all up and died. I say we try and find out. Call is the great cleansing of 2010 where all iTards and their pettiness are thrown into a penal colony on Antarctica. The world would instantly be a better place.
@Dr House, I'm afraid your wrong.
It seems a majority of people disagree with you. Thus, you are lowest ranked.
If I had to guess, I would say that's because your comment is useless ignorant babble.
Oh yeah, and open source anything beats the living piss out of anything closed source. Period. No exceptions.
If I had to choose how to die, I would get donut poisoning.
Delicious donuts.
mmm~ Lardy donut goodness~ I have to agree with you, especially if they're of the chocolate-cream filled variety~
Mmmm...
This is all well and good but when does Android "Scone" come out?
Right after the Krueller.
Ryan:
+1 point for obscure pastry reference. I had know idea that is what those are called.
-1 point for spelling Cruller wrong. D:
And I dock myself 1 point for spelling "know instead" of "no". DDDDDD:
Just alerted my G1-toting buddy and he is pleasantly surprised.
Donut... nom nom nom
What's next? Cake?
WAIT! I forgot....the cake is a lie.
no toolbag, eclair is next
noob question but if ive got a flashed phone with cyanogens 1.5 ROM will this update still hit me OTA or will i have to update manually. thank you
You have to manually update or revert to stock to get OTA's.
Will other carriers will be as wonderful about delivering Android updates?
I am with at&t and get updates often, I really enjoy my G1. I function beter with a keyboard and the apps are pretty decent too.
So, whatever happened to the claim that the G1's flash memory is too small for any updates beyond 1.5?
I thought this statement was retracted/disproved around the time we started hearing about it?
Like I said immediately in those threads, this blog and every other blog was wrong and intentionally misleading to gin up a controversy where there was none.
Ah. In that case, shame on Engadget for perpetuating the fake controversy. I only read the original post, plus the "correction" which just quoted a rather unconvincing rebuttal from the company rep, IIRC.
Somehow, the Android dev team managed to get Donut 9MB smaller than Cupcake. (60MB vs 69MB)
that turned out to be false, although i heard that both the G1 will no longer be officially updated beyond 1.6, and that it probably couldn't handle 2.0
thank you
Thanks Cyanogen for providing us donut goodness as early as 2 months ago.
:( Still waiting and nothing... DC-Metro area...
How would I go about getting this update on a G1 with no T-Mobile service? I'm using my friend's retired G1 to evaluate the Android platform, so I only have Wi-Fi...
You'll still get it pushed out to you if you're running a T-Mobile firmware. It doesn't care if you're connected to a T-Mobile tower, an AT&T tower, or any random WiFi connection.
Of course, if you're only connected to the internet intermittently who knows how long the update will take to find you. In a few days you should start seeing the official update hosted at various enthusiast sites online that you can manually force install. You just throw a big zip file on your SD card and then reboot while holding down a certain button and it'll install itself, no hacking required.
@Drew
I believe you can also manually update the ROM by downloading it, booting into the recovery screen and installing the "update.zip" from a downloaded source on the net.
There are a couple of tuts on how to do this for cupcake, and is specifically what I did when 1.5 hit because I didn't feel like waiting.
T-Mobile was rather quick with this. I guess they learned from last time...
It's also a pretty minor update. There's WAY less stuff to test than there was in Cupcake, which was almost an entire overhaul of the OS and included hundreds of changes.
They don't give the updates at the same time for a number reasons. First, it is sent out to a select few in each market so they can test that it is being sent out properly, downloaded properly, and installed properly. Making sure the update doesn't cause bricks :)
Also sending out the update all at the same time would cause tremendous stress on the network when everyone will be trying to download the update file at the same time. This would slow down the network and maybe even bring on outages. Rolling it out slowly will make sure the update is good to go, and causing the least amount of stress on the network.
Damnit, T-mo, gimme already.
not to start a flame war but I like how Palm Pre gets their over the air updates. Its available to everyone right away but if ur using 3G to DL it then it downlaods really slow, it waita till your phone is idol to DL at full speed but if ur on Wifi it downloads right away. I like tmobile plays it safe to not push out a bad update to everyone but most people hate waiting. My dad is dying to jave 1.6 heh. Anyway both OTA solutions are better than the iPhone connecting to itunes. Lame!
^Spell check and punctuation are your friends.
I think that they should have a tool, so one can connect to wifi, and download it manually. Most of the G1 users are excited for updates, so we would rather do that then have to wait for the update to come to us.
"not to start a flame war, but....."
reminds me of the Chris Rock(I think) bit: Anytime you hear somebody say 'I'm not a racist, but...'- you know they're about to say something racist.
Anyone know if I'll be able to get this from Tmobile via WiFi? I don't currently have data on my G1.
im using my g1 unlocked on at&t, does anyone know how i will get this update?
The donut is a lie! oh wait...
I bought unlocked (not cracked) my HTC Hero! How could i donwload / apply Android 1.6 ?
sorry for sounding noob.
but why can't they let us download the update ourselves instead of pushing it through carriers?
The official downloadable update will be available in a few days as it usually is. The reason they don't actively advertise it is due to the average user does not have the skills to do the update. Its not difficult. But difficult enough that if you frack it up you've just bricked your phone.
aah i see. (=
thanks for the info.
Got mine! Proud G1 owner for 1 year now.
Got the 1.6 Update when I woke up this morning!!!!
Murrieta, CA
Yea, if they released to all at once 1, the server would crash/download at 0.1kbs, 2, there could be problems or chance of brick, and so on. i fuckin checked my phone all day for the update, lol, i like updates and cant wait.....
I have my update already im on AT&T now i cant use my headphones like i used 2. I used to use the headset toggle widget to turn it on and off now that doesnt even make the headset work. Anybody know any new work arounds
My phone just offered me the update this morning. It seems a lot snappier on my G1, and all of the new stuff seems to work well.
i loved the comments that Dr House made
"DR House @ Oct 2nd 2009 12:23AM

lol i think its hilarious because actually i believe that it actually hasnt even been a month since At&t iPhones had MMS enabled. SO who is the the one thats really behind barely coming out with a service thats been out since like 2001 but they barely get it lik 8 years laters now thats really arriving late to the party!!!!!!!! just saying :-)
1.6 gives my G1 constant errors which state "The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. [Force Close]"
Got this update pushed to me days ago. Only thing I notice different is that instead of "clear notifications" it now just says "clear" and the market is completely overhauled. I'm digging the new market.
Got my update over night.
I have to say, my G1 is faster, and the Android Market user interface is MUCH IMPROVED.
Got my OTA update over the weekend.
Things are running faster now, as quick as when I got it late last year. Not sure what it was, but it had been running slower the last 2-3 months.
Got mine yesterday... much faster ui experience and the battery info is a nice addition .
noob question, but does anyone know when/if 1.6 will be pushed to HTC Magic handsets?
I'm in Australia, so we'll probably wait until december 2013, but is there any talk of it?
