ASUS intros first 'Marine Cool' motherboard, the SABERTOOTH 55i
ASUS is good for canning concepts just before they've had a chance to truly thrive, but thankfully the company has made an obvious effort to bring its "Marine Cool" mainboard to life. After peeking said device at CeBIT earlier this year, the SABERTOOTH 55i has become the first actual, working product to be based around the technology. The newly-developed TUF series is designed to handle "extreme conditions," and while ASUS claims that it'll survive "military-style testing," we wouldn't recommend submerging it under liquid or blasting it with a railgun. For those looking to piece together a new Core i5 / Core i7 rig, feel free to give the read link a look for all the details, but don't bother searching high and low for a price or release date.

I honestly thought that was a board game before reading the headline.
And showing your total lack of tech knowledge on a tech blog will make you look cool.
Feel free to peruse my other tech-savvy posts from the past. I have no reason to justify my tech knowledge in every post I make.
As to why it seemed that way to me, I oftentimes visit Joystiq, simultaneously, and they just happen to p/review board games. Also, the box really does look like it houses a toy/game.
I stand corrected. You have proven to be cool.
Awesome!
/s
But alas. I shall never surpass your level of cool.
Yan, that box stinks, It really looks like a RISK box from a counterfeiter, agree with ya.
I dunno what the arguing was about, since text seems to be washed... aw, wait. xD
You know I get it...... But if this tech were put into some micro pcs or in dash pcs it might sell better. The higgh end gamer deserves it no doubt but the regular schmo would more likely like this for an in dash system...... Maybe a mid or two..... Or am I giving this new "marine cool" too much credit?
wow, for the first time, i actually knew some tech news before engadget posts it
Dude, nobody cares!
you should read other sites more... I love engadget and all, but while they are often the most in depth they are often not the first to cover a story.
@Sacapuntas: go troll somewhere else!
@sacapuntas, I wouldn't go as far to say that they are more in depth than others. An unboxing, a once-over and specs off the manufacturers website is usually about as in-depth as engadget gets and maybe a comparsion if we're lucky.
Had me excited here, I was expecting to have a board with USMC colors, and emblems. Marine...bleh. it's just marketing name as usual.
I will wait for the ASUS WOLVERINE motherboard.
Sweet board should look great inside my $30 crap case. Too bad I'll never see it.
I learned long ago not to get too excited about boards like this because for the most part, you never see them ever again, once they're inside the case. I've had standard boards in cases for years without hiccups. Just remember to send CLEAN power to your PSU. Use a high quality APC UPS, and your board and components will last forever.
Just sayin'.
Wake me when they announce the ASUS Platypus. That would be the most BADASS motherboard on the face of this planet.
How's this motherboard different from others? Better cooling for chipsets and mosfets?
Do someone ever realize that ASUS in french means SHE SUCKS (ASUS = ELLE SUCE )
When I talked to someone at the company, they said it is pronounced "Ah Suce" and not "A Suce". I have no idea how ELLE sounds in French...
I speak french fluently and 'she sucks'? man that is a stretch by any metric. ASUS is pronounce 'Ay-SUS' two syllables now ELLE SUCE in french is pronounced 'El - Su Se' three syllables, they aren't phonetically close.
Cool. But... I want USB 3.0 already. I would totally get this otherwise and put it into my car. I do doubt the cooling is sufficient enough to keep it cool in a car without AC. But I'd buy this over a regular motherboard for the fact its better at cooling than normal.
why would you put a full atx in your car, that's what ITX is for, even mATX would be more than you ever need. Aside from that cooling would be a non-issue, show me a board that provides 'better cooling'. Heat is the least of your worries way behind vibration and powering it.
Why not put a full ATX in my car? Vibration, I don't know what you mean. Aside from the harddrive, which I'll be using a SSD. Powering it is easy with a inverter and a regular power supply. Haven't you seen a carputer before? I am using the carputer for ecu management, gauges and entertainment. A full ATX will be optimum.
I am a fan of ASUS products, so don't get me wrong here, but this is just pure marketing. First of all, they do not list the specific MIL-STD method, which states the kind of tests these devices have been through. At the end of the day, does it really matter if they are military grade or not? How often does a cap or transistor fail on your mother board? Generally, the items that fail are external, hard drive, processor, memory, and video card. However, getting a cheap mother board is just as bad. Definitely, don't cheap out on the MB, but you do not have to buy the most expensive one either.
Caps are cheap, but as long as they are made from porcelain or ceramic, you should not have an issue. MOSFET/transistors are not going to be much better if they are mil speced or not. The Engineering company I work for manufacturers military products that use these devices and none of our products use Mil-Std transistors in the design and they work fine. (Note the end product as a whole generally needs to pass some Mil-Std specifications, vibration, heat, etc).
Overclockers need quality caps as they push the boards past normal specs. That is why you can overclock ASUS, etc. type boards and not cheap econo-boards like ECS.
Love Asus boards reliable and value at a good price and I'd be all over this if it accepted 6 memory Dimms and up to 24 GB of ram.
How Much and Where can I sign up?
Hey, relax on the CAPS LOCKS. Just because it's printed on the box in caps does not mean the name is literally `SABERTOOTH 55i', no more than is it the case that motherboards ought now to be referred to as `MOTHERBOARDS' simply because it's printed that way on the box. HOLLA!
I NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY CAPS PISS PEOPLE OFF?
