Video: Power Loader has giant freaking robot arms!
We've seen our fair share of useful but ugly and pretty but pointless robotic concoctions, but nothing quite like this. The Power Loader suit, which was directly inspired by the mech outfits in Aliens, is in our humble opinion an exoskeleton done right. With two massive protruding arms, capable of lifting 220 pounds without a sweat, direct force feedback for intuitive control, and even powered legs, we're inclined to believe what we're seeing here is a tiny glimpse of the awesome mech-dominated future we've been waiting so long for. Also known as the Dual-Arm Power Amplification Robot, this is produced by Activelink, a Panasonic subsidiary, and you might be shocked to discover that there are plans afoot to commercialize it by 2015. Entrancing video after the break.

I hope the production model doesn't make those stupid xylophone noises.
More importantly, will the production model have blue circles hovering around each limb? 'Cuz, you know, I might not know that those things at the bottom are called "legs."
The things at the bottom are called legs? I thought they were called stomperators.
FAP FAP FAP FAP
I like that, 'stomperators'
The protectors of Zion
That looks like the Japanese Barrack Obama
you made my day :)
Hah! Nice one.
LOL, you're so right.
especially the bluish background, how fitting.
HAI WE CAN!
Really, reminds me more of Bush becuse it's slow, stands there and does nothing (in the video at least) and serves no real purpose. Then again, I suppose the same could be said about Obama, but not to the same extent. At least he's trying...
GET AWAY FROM HER! YOU BITCH!
At last we can fight the Aliens!?
Superb!
@nighttime
"GET AWAY FROM HER, YOU . . . You know, you should really be watching this powerloader video on DirecTV, because they have true 1080 HD quality."
First thing that came to mind when I saw the picture was Alien!
And to that guy with the Direct TV comment, lmao!
Now back to shaking babies with my massive robotic arms!
Bay 9, please
I'm inspired. Gotta watch that movie again tonight.
@ Nytrojen
"Where do you want it?"
"Ha ha! Bay 12, please." ** resumes chewing on stoagie **
"Hey Jim, can you move that one box for me?"
"Yeah Sure, if I start now, it should be moved by next week sometime"
haha well, its a start to a totally frikkin awesome future.
... Then they get as fast as the mech in District 9, and can catch RPG's in mid flight
... then we all die.
mech in District 9 = best mech ever in any game/movie.
Space Marines deployed.
Spiderman 2 anyone?
Sorry, dude. Wrong movie.
There are too many posts that deserve upranking I'd spend my whole pause doing so...
No comment on the hypnotizing music?!
"Like my invention, or I will crush your head like a egg"
. . . "if you hold still long enough."
Good idea! Because learning is for losers!
In case of an itch, whatever you do, don't try to scratch you happy sack.
Which would you rather have? District 9 Mech? or Metal Gear?
I was rather fond of the mechs from Heavy Gear, personally.
Hmm, I really like the gravity control/force field effect: grab whatever is around you/coming toward you fast and project it at speed... the mech worked a lot better in autopilot before our hero got in. Shame you have to be an alien to use it really. There were some great internet movies of the mech throwing buses at bridges.
What about one of the robots from Robot Jox? They were pretty cool... for an 80's B movie.
"I kill you dead, Achilles!"
OMG.
Hunter XMG FTW!
Well, Hunter XMG chassis, then use some black momba legs and grizzly arms (gotta have those to use the big guns!)
I miss that game...
no one for Metal Gear REX or RAY? awww. I would actually like the power suit from FEAR2. That is an awesome walking tank.
Robotech
MechWarrior FTW... old school style.
Though 220 pounds sounds impressive.. its a mere 100 kg which means you can basically cary twice the load of an avarage construction worker. Sorry but seen how massive it is i dont see it that useful for anything else but physical disabled people.
With the speed of construction workers working on a well funded government/towncouncil project.
Fuck. Yes.
To all the naysayers: No technological system just appears overnight, and is instantly awesome. These are the first few steps, give it a little while (and given that we're talking about our Japanese brethren and sisteren the wait probably won't be all that long) and it will amazing.
- Can I do anything?
- I don't know, *can* you do anything?
- I CAN DRIVE THAT LOADER!

would have been a lot cooler if he actually did *something* with the damn thing.
I've always wondered why we never had those devices from Aliens. A better question is why are there no Mechs? I would think the military would shit themselves if they could arm a platoon of soldiers with Mech suits. Are the robotics and the legs arms really that hard to make reliably? Or is this something that sound so far out there that no one wants to invest time or money into such things. I know we've seen a bigillion robots from Japan fall on their butts as they try and walk a staircase, but I always attributed that to the AI not up to the task...*shrugs* I want battle Mechs!
The problem comes with weight and mobility, not desire to have such devices. A foot soldier can walk through mud, water, sand, close trees, etc with minimal issues... something weighing 2-3 times as much as an average human would easily become mired in sand or mud, and simply be incapable of the dexterity required to weave between close objects (trees, buildings, etc). At least with current technology.
That being said, using exosuits as a smaller cousin to tanks and other armored vehicles would be a very workable idea. If the balancing could be worked out, some rather nice caliber cannons could be mounted on those arms.
The other problem to consider is that you need to store enough energy. Wheres the post on mobile fusion reactors today engadget?!?!?!?!?!
Lets just unleash one of these in a small metropolitan area........ With some crazy meth head at the helm.......
