Nokia E72 NAM up for $469 preorder on Amazon
It's not hard to find Nokia users that believe the E71 is the finest S60 device (if not the finest device, period) that the company has ever made, so expectations for the E72 are at a stratospheric high. Impatience for a retail release is also at a stratospheric high, coincidentally, so Americans will be pleased to see that Amazon now has the unlocked North American version of the "zodium black" phone listed for $469 -- without a release date, unfortunately, so it's still a guessing game as to when these will actually be shipping out. All things considered, it's not a bad price for an unbranded phone of the E72's capabilities, but when you figure how easy it's been to find awesome deals on North American Nokias around the interwebs this year, it still might give some potential buyers pause -- just imagine if it were $299?

pretty cool... I like the phone A LOT!
thanks, been waiting for this
I can't tell the difference between regular black and "Zodium"
Zodium, the last time I heard is equidistant between Black and Noir. Similar, but not to confused with schwarz.
One love
Finally, maybe we'll start to see the E71 start to fall in price
The E71, IMO, is the finest mobile phone ever made (from any manufacturer). I can't wait to get my hands on the E72.
The E71-2 is the best handset I have ever owned (My only grip being the complete lack of firmware upgrades for NA Handsets). So do I follow my gut which is saying "if it ain't broken don't fix it".....upgrade to the E72, or throw out everything I know to be holy, and grab the N900? Decisions...... Decisions.
Go with the N900
I have the e71-2 as well, and love it, but I am definitely going n900.
Yay
Lets hope nokia doesn't screw over its customers with bad firmware like it did on the previous model, where all the photos were purple. It was even proven on the forums it was a nokia problem, but they refused to fix it. I think that disappointed a lot of people with nokia, I guess they feel you should just buy another $400.00 phone 4 or 5 months later , rather than them fix the firmware.
Can anyone point me toward a link or something that provides a comparison - lists the major differences between the E71 and the E72?
I love my E71, but I pretty much bought it only a year ago - the E72 would have to pretty much walk on water for me to drop nearly $500 on it after only a year with my E71.
Thanks,

Basically it will hold more memory, faster processor, better camera, flashlite pre-installed.
I'd say it's a worthy successor, but i don't think you need to run right out and get it.
Within the first few months it will be $399.
N97 prices are falling, and that will force all nokia phone prices down.
For those of you above suggesting the n900, lets not forget you either have to have suckass tmobile or use it on ATT with no 3g.
Just go to Nokia's website and select E71 and E72 and hit the compare button.
go to www.phonegg.com and use the comparison tool to compare the 2 phones.
jcar302 is right...theres not a lot of differences between the two, but there are some really nice things that have been beefed up. whereas a 5mp camera is very tempting, the 3.2mp on the e71 takes amazing outdoor photos and in my case horrible grainy inside photos. i honestly dont think a bump to 5mp is going to make a 'better' picture. i remember my blackberry 8310 actually took the best photos of all of my phones (going from blackberries to htc to nokia).
also a very tempting addition is the optical trackpad. head to a local at&t store and ask to try out the samsung epix or the new samsung jack which are sporting the trackpad and see if you like the difference between that and the d-pad on the e71.
i agree with you though. my e71 is hands down amazing (and choosing the white version i think its also a very sexy device too) and the e72 is quite tempting. wait it out for a little while. let them do some revisions to the OS and to drop the price as well. that way youll probably run across one in the meantime and you can see if its worth the price difference.
Fully loaded with WIFI 3G GPS and lot cheaper than your newest Blackberry. i love nokia.
My E71 is GOD. Then what will that make this device? I do 1337 things with my phone Blackberry and iPhone users cant even dream of.
Im waiting on LTE, Bluetooth 3.0, USB 3.0 , SDXC micro, HDMI out, OLED display, and 8 mpx with Xenon flash, 4.3" Display, Maemo, Snapdragon and querty keyboard. I expect Nokia to drop such a device next summer if it plans on catching up with the competition. I mean HTC, Sony and Samsung not APPLE! Only then will I upgrade. Now is not a good time with all these new technologies ready to roll out next year.
How's the touchscreen working out for u?
The N900 murderkilled my interest in the E72, but... damn, that's sexy.
I tired out the E71, coming from a blackberry. I returned it after a month. The phone is nice, but email is not integrated into the phone, no matter what the marketing material might say. And its hard to go back to having to "check your mail."
I guess, you used E71x. In any case, it is possible to use push email on E71 i think. Its possible, just need to open your eyes and ears.
Completely agree. The E71 which I just picked up on the cheap is a damn nice phone. The hardware is impeccable across the board and puts everything (iPhone, Pre etc) to shame. The problem is all with the OS which is dreadful. Email does not work well and obvious things are hard like trying to call a number you've just received a text message from.
All a bit of a shame really .. give me Nokia hardware + Pre/Android OS and I'll be in lurve.
Nice. Not my cup of tea - that form factor doesn't appeal to me - but it's still a fine looking phone.
Last time I looked, on the Expansys USA site, they had an Oct 12 release date listed I believe.
I've also seen it listed as low as $440 for preorder, so $470 is a tad high.
Does anyone know if http://www.timtechs.com/ is a reliable source for buying unlocked phones? They generally have low prices.
I bought my N85 from them. They are reliable.
Thanks everyone for your input. For me, the camera is what is tempting me. I do a fair amount of mobile blogging and sending pics to FB and stuff.
Also, yes you can get push email, and it is working for me pretty well. Currently free in beta from Nokia, but that won't last forever. It's called Nokia Messaging. I'm pretty happy with it, but it does tend to eat up the battery.

I can guarantee everyone above reporting issues with the E71's use'ability (software) is referring to the crippled E71X from AT&T. What they did to Symbian S60 is a crime. Buy the E71 unlocked or don't buy it at all.
i supposed you can debrand it.
There's an english-language review of the E72 on mobile-review.
http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-e72-en.shtml
The E71 was excellent, but this is amazing! I'm loving the battery life and the performance!
I briefly had the E71 and was profoundly disappointed. Absolutely terrible function keys - all slopped together in an unusable arrangement. The d-button was like a weird, sloped knife blade surrounding a ridiculously huge clicker from an 80's arcade game. It *hurt* to use it very much. The QUERTY keys were a little too small and cramped, and the phone is so small and thin it cramps your fingers if you hold it too long. I had to use a damn pen to hit buttons most of the time! Only small women or monkeys could use this phone easily. Does that really make sense for a smartphone, the primary users of whom are traditionally businessMEN? Come on, Nokia..give us another Blackerry-ish rig like the E61, or something a male human could use. Sure, women talk and text a lot more than guys do, but men who buy a full alphanumeric device expect it to be *usable*, for crying out loud. And please don't say "just get a blackberry"..been there, done that, couldn't believe anyone uses that junk.
I believe, your demands are such that no phone except a full touchscreen can satisfy your fantasies.(that may also not be enough, i guess).
You might the first person i know has criticized the hardware design of this phone. Do you know, this phone has sold more than 7 million units i gues. So i believe, 7 million small women and monkeys bought the phone!
i have used the unlocked E71 for a while and have to say the quality and the multi-tasking of the phone is great. MY roommate got a E71X (SUCKX) from AT&T after playing with my phone. But boy he was disappointed when he got his phone. The quality of the phone and the crapware on the E71X was no where near my unlocked E71.
Great phone, I bought mine yesterday at Nokia Store Shanghai, China, unlocked and without contract for 3590RMB.
Built quality is excellent, like the E71 is, camera is great and the soundquality too, since it has the XpressMusic Series sound chip onboard. Batterylife seems to be just as good as the E71's, maybe better, time will tell.
If you like the E71 and want it improved, buy the E72, but I dont know when they send it to good old USA though.
Will the europe/asia version work with at&t/rogers in North America? I'm going to Hong Kong soon and I'm not sure if I should wait for the NAM release or just get it then.
Dont know, but you can get anything in HongKong, probably the NAM version before it hits the shelfs in the US itself. ;)
My E71 Europe version worked fine in the US, im sure the E72 will do the same, dont know on which network though.
You'll be able to use the European E72 on Rogers, AT&T, and T-Mobile, but you'll be stuck with EDGE for your data. Unfortunately, they use different 3G frequencies over in Europe, so the 3G radio won't work here. On the other hand, generally North American phones don't support the common European 3G bands, so you're stuck with EDGE if you take your NAM phone over there. If you're ok without 3G, then by all means, buy the Euro model.
I'm one of those people who think that the E71 is the finest phone that Nokia has ever made.
Slim, aesthetically pleasing, sensational battery life, great RF performance, stable, great multitasking, etc. The only things wrong with it were the camera and the 2.5mm headphone socket. So much was right that it hardly mattered though.
What should I but nokia $469 or iPhone for $49?
I want a cell that will completely replace an mp3 player.
I'm still using the old E61 (no camera), its a brick but its a great phone and the keyboard is better than these new smaller E series QWERTYs but its a slow outdated phone (did I mention brick?) with no camera or GPS and I will be upgrading to either E72 or N900, just need to try the N900 first but I have no doubt that the E72 is a great phone just like the E71.
Nokia $469. iPhone $49. Seriously what will Americans buy??btw I hate apple.
Why are you comparing an unlocked none-subsidised price to a locked subsidised price that requires a 24-month contract with an evil network?
I love my E71.. I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up upgrading to the E72 in a year's time.
I really fail to see the appeal of this. What can you do with this phone that you can't do with any number of other more attractive and cheaper smart phones?
This has a brilliant QWERTY keyboard which is far more usable for long e-mails than a standard numerical keypad or touchscreen based keyboard.
Plus this is a very very attractive phone that is as much about form as it is about function.
@TJ Hooker
"Great phone, I bought mine yesterday at Nokia Store Shanghai, China, unlocked and without contract for 3590RMB."
How did you buy the E72 in Shanghai when Nokia doesn't even list it on their China site...and still "Coming Soon" in Hong Kong...and only pre-order bait listings on Taobao, for that matter?
T.I.C.*
* this is China!
Actually, now that I double-check the Expansys site, it says December 7th is the expected release date. :(
