Nokia plugs itself into the Wireless Power Consortium
The Wireless Power Consortium has already managed to attract some pretty big players in the industry (including Philips, Sanyo and Duracell), but it's now bolstered its roster with one of its biggest heavyweights yet by announcing that Nokia has signed on as a full member. Of course, Nokia isn't making any firm promises about incorporating the Consortium's Qi wireless power standard into its products just yet, but it does say that the technology "carries significant potential to enhance consumer experience of battery charging," and that it "aims to meet these consumer expectations." For its part, the Wireless Power Consortium is unsurprisingly thrilled to have Nokia on board, noting that the move "significantly expands the potential market traction of the Qi wireless charging standard."

i would get nokia phones if they were with a carrier contract and not just unlocked. i just can't afford a $500 phone.
Carrier crippled locked phones don't do Nokia justice. That's why they were trying to integrate SIP into their phones to get rid of the carrier middlemen who slow down the adoption of new technology.
Look up the word "subsidy" - there's no such thing as a free or cheap phone. When you buy a phone thats branded and crippled by an American operator, you're not only getting an inferior device, but you're still paying the full, multi-hundred dollar price over the course of a required length of time in monthly installments. If you don't understand this, than your a very ignorant consumer and unfortunately, among the majority of American mobile users. In Europe, its largely ILLEGAL to forcefully bundle mobile devices with mobile services, and the result is that there, users pay a lot less for better mobile services and devices. This is called capitalism, where governments ensure that corporations and consumers alike are all on a level playing field and competition is always fierce. In the USA, there is hardly any competition between mobile service providers, since consumers are locked into contracts and invested in crippled phones, which is why we enjoy some of the poorest quality, most expensive mobile services and devices among industrialized nations. It's ironic and sad that such anti-competitiveness is rampant in a country that claims to be a place where freedom of choice and entrepreneurship are valued...
@markalvarpeck:
They're just enjoying their FRRREEDOM to be shafted by mobile service providers. Why do you hate America?
*crying bald eagle*
You cant afford a 500$ phone, but want to buy it on credit (=contract)?
How illogical is that? Maybe thats why americans are so bad in debt.
Hanky! Get out of here with your logic and astute observations. A tech blog comment section is no place for reality!
over here in Pakistan 30sec based call charging leads to like 1 USD/30mins, and there are SMS bulk packages so on average you get 500 SMS for 1 USD (with one month validity). Not that calls cost nearly the same to any cellular network in Pakistan.
Although the Governing body PTA has now become PITA since they aren't governing well and these cellular companies have started charing a small fee, around 2-5 cents for checking your balance on prepaid connectoins (Pre paid connections are the norm here)
Carriers doesnt have to cripple ifones because its already done by apple ..bluetooth...itunes...ringtone
sounds really cool. email tech questions to techxpert@hotmail.com
This is only beneficial on a phone if it can work from a distance, so the you can put the phone to your ear whilst charging. I doubt it will.
Its not entirely useless because it avoids tangled charging wires and makes charging multiple electronics easier.
I think its relatively useful and very innovative, but its all opinion because some people want different things in a product.
agreed. If it's something you have to place on a "wireless" plate or something, it would be useless. but.... if it worked all around the house (i.e. Walk into the house with your cell in your pocket which then instantly charges) then I would be sold on the technology.
Not really actually. I am very... cord-organized challenged (ie lazy), and I just put my phone and iPod on my desk whenever I get home. If it just charged then and there, that would be a lot easier.
Im waiting for the day when I dont need to move my fat lazy a.ss from the couch and my 50inch plasma tv anymore and robots, wireless stuff and so on will do all the work for us humans.
Im too lazy to plug in the cord into my cellphone, so this will be an awesome thing!
About the extra radiation Im not concerned, maybe I can just order a pill against the radiation induced cancer in 20 years that we all will enjoy.
40% of the charging energy is waisted by these things.
The energy companies will like that.
No, BC Hydro will love that... they teach British Columbians to be electricity misers so that they can sell the surplus juice to California.
there is NO WAY these things don't cause cancer. NO WAY.
Okay doctor. Whatever you say.
What we really need is efficent and quick power storage. We need a storage solution that can give phones 30 days of talk time and instantanious charging. Laptops giving 2-4 hours of battery life is hardly mobile. We still have to run around with our chargers where ever we go. Hopefully fuel cell technology will address this in the near future and if it does, I'm sure electric cars would become more popular.
its make ,nokia Carrier crippled locked phones don't do Nokia justice. That's why they were trying to integrate SIP into their phones to get rid of the carrier middlemen who slow down the adoption of new technology
"Vishnu Vadlamudi" makes a good point and I'd like to add...
Wireless charging = more electromagnetic waves (carrying energy) around = more radiation.
Even now, there are more than enough EM waves around that you absorb 7/24. I'll be really happy with my wired life, maybe less mobile but in more healthy way.
Think about it twice, people.
Nokia concentrate on creAting an iphonekiller already.
Nokia is so far behind right now in USA. About 4 years.
Nokia couldn't care less about the USA, their NAM devices get firmware updates much later than EUR.
Don't you have something better to do than create new profiles to troll?
Have you heard about N900?
Is nokia trying to start the next cell revolution? Like iPhone did.
Not happening!
Ofcz not, it is just making your life easier with less cords around and charging of multiple devices at a time.
Wow. Someone recommended to buy nokia n900 $750!!!!!!
R u insane!! I live in America. I'll stick with my superior 85,000 apps n counting $49 iPhone 3g.
You're "truth"fully ret@rded, aren't you?
For $49 iPhone, read markalvarpeck's comment at top.
Hmm. After a moment of thinking, I gave up.
Please don't bother to read it since you'll definitely *not* understand it;
If you had the perception, you'd not write dumb comments above.
I can tell that if this thing takes off, MS will be using it in their "coffee-table" computer. It may be pretty cool like that
This is great news. Wireless charging will make it very easy to charge multiple devices and more convenient than current cord system.
The only problem is I could see some manufacturers of mobile phones getting lazy (Apple) about trying to optimise their devices battery use.
