Who knows what it is about the PSP that engenders
such a loyal following of hackers -- both on the hardware and
software side. Some of the hardware hacks we've seen are no doubt more impressive than others, but they're all united in a common disregard for warranties and for the most part a deep affection for LEDs. The first
PSP Go mod we've seen, done up by roro3030 over at
AcidMods, keeps things simple with some strategic, tasteful white LED placement. It's all internally powered and pretty seamless, and provides a nice jumping off point for a community that will be no-doubt eager to consume the PSP Go as a new challenge -- even if the rest of us are busy making frowny faces at that endlessly derided price tag. Video of the lit-up Go is after the break.
what a useless piece of shit mod. dear god. what was he thinking when he was making this?
"hurr durr. lets add leds!"
friend "for?"
"hurr durr... its a mod! first modded PSP!!! ILL BE FAMOUS! DERP"
Tis' called Blinkinlights. We, as humans, likes them.
"DURR my name is Pintozoz and i am a useless troll"
friend "for?"
"duh, it give me life meaning?"

and the truth fades away.

This place is overrun with trolls trying to make people hate Apple and their fans. *sigh*
@ truth modders need to mod your brain
Ambient light sensor for best screen resolution in sunlight etc.
Whatever... Stand in the dark and get a nice 3px by 3px
While I appreciate everyone bagging on this guy's "mod" and calling it out as just a cheap bling-bling stupid, distracting waste of time, I have to say you're all complete f#cking hypocrites because you'd all be slobbering on this guy's nads and praising him to no end if he'd taken the guts out of the PSP Go and stuck them in a giant plastic R2D2.
Ben Heck does real mods. What Engadget usually sticks on here is just blinging up electronics in clunky, stupid ways. And really; Any of you who praised the bunch of junk stuck in a pop culture figurine ANY time Engadget posted one should probably realize you're not exactly on high ground with making fun of this weak-ass mod.
This is stupid, but it's no more stupid than a plastic R2D2 with console guts dumped into it.
Another pointless PSP Go story on engadget, what a surprise.
The PSPGo WAS hacked already. Only Usermode exploit though.
Because nothing is better than letting a few leds shine into your face while playing.
Genius!
Actually, roro3030's mod *is* important because it constitutes a new step. People in that community have been pessimistic about their ability to mod the Go because its design is far less welcoming than normal PSP iterations. That someone took the first step and added LEDs is a positive sign.
Distracting lights like the racked LEDs you'd try to hide in a darkened room with a monitor while watching a movie? Of course. But other mods always come later: Dual analog nubs, dual SD slots, 32GB internal memory and better speakers, for example -- all mods that have been done to the phat and/or slim already.
And get it right, pals: Mods pertain to hardware. Hacks pertain to firmware and software. The hack story's promising (unless you talk to Dark Alex), but it doesn't have much to do this hardware mod.
It wouldn't hurt to be nice, or even to show some appreciation. Modders aren't some massive company that experiments with new products on your dollar. They're a community of individuals, most of whom take significant financial hits trying out ideas that just might end up becoming useful to you.
Yes. Because I fully intend to buy a $250 POS and then turn it into a crappy pocket version of MAME so I can play 20-year-old games and impress my friends.
okay 1st of all you gotta give credit for PSP developers for this new release.
Some caveats we've seen:
1) UMD (optional) peripheral - - Please don't remove it permanently. Traditional PSP users still want that feature to be intact
2) A Snazzy Place to Download Free PSP Games - Let's face it, downloading all your games in PSP GO's official website with a price tag ain't that cool
3) Bigger Memory in the future - a 16GB internal + 16 max memory (external) = 32 . if I Have a game which is amounting to 2 gigs each. I can only install 16 games then? What If I want to store some HD quality movies and music? - - A storage upgrade will be very generous indeed
We have a little review about PSP GO: http://pinoytutorial.com/techtorial/psp-go-a-nightmare-for-psp-users/
And why some users call it a "NightMare"
