Sony takes Uncharted 2 on tour, with 4K digital projection to make you forever loathe your home setup
Looking for a quick and easy way to become completely dissatisfied with your own PS3 rig? Maybe you could try tracking down Sony at one of its "sneak peak" stops, where attendees will be able to play through some of the upcoming, already-lauded Uncharted 2 on a movie screen powered by a Sony 4K digital cinema projector. Unfortunately, only four locations have been named, and two of them are in California, so not quite everybody is going to get a chance to spoil themselves for this generation of video games forever.

This is probably the same thing that appeared on Joystiq; all I know is that the Bellevue location is at Lincoln Square Cinemas, but they're probably sold out already.
Good luck getting a ticket; I already got mine. Can't wait to literally wet myself.
@CH3BURASHKA
I just saw the Uncharted 2 trailer yesterday at the Lincoln Square Cinema in Bellevue, and I can truly say that it looked horrible. Very grainy and clearly upscaled beyond reason. A console video game has no business running on a theater sized screen.
It was immediately followed by real film trailers and the difference was night and day in favor of the film trailers.
4K? Coincidentally, I think that may be the total number of PS3 owners as well.
No, not really. I usually see 12,000+ playing the Uncharted 2 demo everyday. You are misinformed, my good man.
The Sony 4k projectors (I take care of one of the first models, the R-105) actually do a really amazing job of uprezzing. On our 30' screen we have both the Sony and a Sanyo 720p to use. With the same 720p signal on both, the Sony blows away the Sanyo. It really looks like a higher res image. Of course, if Sony has already demoed a PS3 group render, then that is most likely what they will do. My other thought, and I guess this is relatively trivial for the makers of the device, is that at least on the R-105 (not sure about the newer models) the only way to pipe 4k in is to use 4 HD-SDI input cards (there are four interchangeable card bays on it). The PS3 doesn't normally do HD-SDI. Anyway, long-winded way of saying that you'd be pretty amazed at how good regular PS3 games look on these projectors. The pixel pitch is so tiny that you have NO screen door effect either, even on a 30' screen standing a foot away. And one more thing: to "pete" claiming that all theatres project at 4k. You sir are clueless. Using digital resolution to quantify the quality of physical film is firstly almost impossible. They are simply two different mediums. Secondly, a prisitine 35mm film print has enough detail (not resolution) to compare with an 8k or more digital scan, depending on the film stock shot on and how well it was exposed. So a theatre projecting film prints (when they are new and in good condition) should look better than a 4k projector. Except that a print of a movie these days is almost always made from a digital intermediate which was almost certainly done in 2k, although possibly in 4k. Okay, that's enough. bye.
Eric, thank you for actually taking time to speak sensibly. People always want to compare digital to film, and they really are just different mediums. Oil on canvas vs watercolor on paper... they're just different. We are putting together a render farm for the Red One right now and it is amazing how clear the 4K can be, but it is STILL different from film.
kkavanagh, people who don't spend their lives in post-production simply don't grasp all of the complexities in working analog to digital and back and forth. There's enough to it to spend a lifetime learning. Best of luck with your Red render farm, it's a tricky workflow to distribute the processing load REDCode demands. I wish I had a farm for it, two weeks ago I had to render back from color correction a Red One feature on a single computer. Took almost 100 hours for an hour and 53 minutes of footage. Doing this stuff on a budget can be a massive headache.
Barco a few years ago had the Reality 909/cine 9 CRT projector that was capable of 3200x2560 versus 4096 x 2160 for the sony 4k, you can still get em for around 9 grand lol
57th!
:) Sooo, I grabbed two tickets being just minutes away from one of the theatres. I probably will buy the game as well - it is a GOTY candidate, based on some early (p)reviews.
As for the PQ of the theatrical presentation - I have no doubts that the staff knows well what they are getting into. Subpar presentation would take away from their celebration... So yeah, I am not worried. This thing will be AWESOME.
@streetstealth
i think they have to work on getting the ratings system to actually work before doing that.
@StreetNoob.
Your comment was just as insightful, and useful here as the turd that typed out, "First".
Get a life.
I cant* wait to get my own "First" comment.
@Agent .25i
He's giving suggestions as how to stop the completely stupid "FIRST" posts that plague every new article.
What the hell have you done?
Already pre-ordered mine. Can't wait.
Let's be honest here.... I don't just read the comments for on-topic opinions. I love it when someone does something dumb and the blog community tears into them. The funniest comment threads I've ever seen are usually the result of some douche typing "FIRST" 3 comments in! So by all means, don't ban or erase them... Let the community "police" the content and it'll remain hilarious!
