Motorola CLIQ / DEXT exhaustively photographed, previewed
The Motorola CLIQ hasn't gone on sale yet, but that hasn't stopped a few units from leaking out here and there -- Eldar at mobile-review just posted up one of the most thorough photo previews of the chunky slider we've seen yet. Interestingly, the keyboard continues to draw mixed reviews -- while we rather liked it when we tried it out, m-r says it's just "okay" and that the five-way rocker "wasn't very handy." We'll have to use this thing a while for ourselves before we make up our minds, but for now, we'd direct you to the read link for a ton more photos.

Look at the phone, begging for just a little charge, while they splay it out for all to see! That's phone torture!
Your battery's already this low.
What a naughty phone.
from the review page engadget linked us to:
"Operating system
The DEXT makes use of Google Android 1.1 operating system with MOTOBLUR tacked on top of it - we'll definitely see it in other Motorola-branded phones down the road, so we'll post a separate review of it as soon as we manage to access the OS itself."
android 1.1 i thought this thing was to have donut (android 1.6).
BAD PHONE!
Awesome!!! This just looks bad ass!!!
Yeah... It really needs single tasking only and a lack of customization to really make it a great phone.
I think Quantumphysics is one of those iSheep.
FML
why would i even buy this phone?
HTC dream is a better choice or my nokia N97 does the job quiet fine thank u
Android is still far from being there but this is a disgrace to it.
I mean just look at the little hunk of plastic
I don't think I could live without transdroid and being able to run multiple programs at the same time, you can keep your ultra slick UI and I'll keep my ultra functional mobile OS.
Wake me up when they have an android device for AT&T, assuming that's before hell freezes over =/
Knowing Apple that would break some sort of contract they have with AT&T
no kidding. im starting to get rather irritated by this. i need a new phone with them and im trying to hold off until they get a good Android handset.
I'm in the same situation. Hopefully, AT&T has something out soon (they should after Verizon announces the Sholes, since by that time, all its competitors will have an Android phone).
Wait a sec, you actually want to STAY with ATT?
what went soo wrong in your childhood that makes you feel that you have to do this?
Wait there are other phone other then the iPhone? LOL
Yeah, there's this thing called "competition". It's what makes the iphone suck nowadays.
I feel bad for europe, that key pad isn't nearly as nice as the cliq, just look at the shiny textured buttons for contrast:

I need a Dpad with depth if I'm gonna play games on that thing. Makes typing more natural too.
I still say it shouldn't be released without a few hundred more Mhz, but as it stands, I think it'll be great alternative to any one sick of/scared of apple's machiavellian restrictions and AT&T's shenanigans.
Speaking of an Android device, I got my Donut update overnight. Very nice change to the Android Market interface.
150 € without contract? WTF? Sign me up, I'm getting one. That's even cheaper than the Huawei, though the Huawei has a nicer screen, so maybe I will get that one... but then again the Huawei will be at least 50 € more expensive, and I am not really sure if I trust Huawei, at least my last Motorola smartphone is bullet proof... it is impossible to destroy it.
Yeah, what the hell's going on here? They're getting it for 150 € without contract, or 1 € subsidized. We're getting it for $200 with a two year contract.
Something ain't right with this situation.
Well, I'm European (though there is no info whether it will launch in my country), so I'm one of the lucky ones. But... seriously? Some price difference, ok (though it usually favours the US), but this sounds unbelievable. Does someone have any proof for Mobile-Burns claim?
I'm pretty sure that's beta hardware. They aren't releasing a blue version. That guy's been known to "review" prerelease hardware/software as shipping hardware.
"The DEXT makes use of Google Android 1.1 operating system with MOTOBLUR tacked on top of it"
The fuck? Android 1.1?
Like I said it's beta hardware, with an old os.
O NOEZ!
MOTOBLURRR!
This preview is from Early September. It features old hardware (they're not releasing blue) and no information about motoblur. In fact, it features outdated information about motoblur. I'm confused as to why this is on the front page, honestly.
How the HELL does Eldar get his hands on hardware so far ahead of everyone else?
It just seriously boggles the mind.
He's actually said one of his phones was stolen. http://twitter.com/eldarmurtazin/status/4031319820
OMFG.. Are you that dumb? Why would Motorola put a Different Phone company's OS on theirs? Maybe put the Iphone OS on a phone which is flip and has no camera? Would you like that?
soo... when do we get the touch pro2???
Ok, WTF? i didnt freaking comment this damn post !
IF the Samsung Gt-I7500 Galaxy doesn't come out for T-Mobile then I am getting this. =]
Blur? MotoBlur? BLUR!!!
pretty old pics and old info.. but shows some unknown info, this helps me decide to get the cliq, thanks guys!
i still don't get all the hubbub about android. will someone explain it to me without using the words "open source" and "competitor to the iphone"?
It's a fresh, new OS backed by a huge and powerful company who is doing interesting things with it. It's a solid OS that can be easily customized by carriers and manufacturers and appear on a huge variety of different handsets. Variety, like all the proprietary OSes, but with the strength of numbers, which will give it growing power in numerous ways such as app support.
It's the direction we should be moving in. I'm just waiting for a phone to meet my needs, like a HD2/Leo.
In addition to what Jonathan mentioned, Android also brought the concept of OTA synchronized email, calendar and contacts (and updates too) to the masses, without having to use proprietary, expensive technologies such as Exchange. It's great to not have to worry about backing up your phone/data or being scared about having to manually transfer ALL that information whenever you buy a new phone.
Well, at least for me, that's a major +.
OK I know of nothing about the iPhone, but I thought they had syncing for years? Am I wrong on that? All I know if I LOVE G app syncing integration into my G1.
My biggest complaint about this device is the lack of an upgrade of the CPU from what the G1 has. In point of fact the two phones have the exact same CPU. The catch is there are a few apps that beat the living crap out of the system when running in the background. Things like Pandora and Waze running at the same time beats the crap out of the system in general. OCing a G1 bringing it up to its rated 528 MHz makes the system usable. But it would be nice to see something with a bit more horsepower under the hood. Even if its scaled to something like 300Mhz those of us who hack our system can at least access this speed.
Other then that this is a nice phone (Crap colors, but I'm assuming there will be something other then blue....sorry I meant BLUE! as an option.) I would have like to see a 3.5" screen but that is neither here nor there since it comes with a keyboard. 3.5" though makes web browsing a bit more tolerable on a phone. Yes I can scroll around which is pretty slick on Androids browser. However 3.5" makes you scroll less. *shrugs* I would love to see Leo with a keyboard. That IMHO is where I would drop half a grand on a phone if needed. This thing? Nope.
