Paid apps now live in webOS App Catalog, Air Hockey comes first
The first paid apps are finally starting to filter into Palm's App Catalog, giving us all another great reason (after our daily caffeine fix has been properly handled, of course) to blow a buck or two every day of our lives. First up is none other than Air Hockey, an app genre that seems to be taking every platform by storm -- we never really thought that the true Dynamo experience could translate well to a couple of fingers on a phone's display, but we're just $1.99 away from finding out for sure.

better than ifart!
I'm still waiting for fart apps for my Blackberry... oh wait, no I'm not.
I just want a huge developer community creating FREE apps for Blackberry.
Say what you want about Apple... but they have tons of developers creating lots of apps.. both good and bad. And a huge collection of free apps and games.
App stores kind of remind me of the strangers driving around in vans offering candy to kids. Little do people know that the candy is really laced with drugs to get the kids hooked and soon they’ll keep coming back for more. Each OS wants it, a way for them to collect more and more from the people without adding really any functionality its more about adding crap that people may just want to buy. Sure people say that Apple was the first, but it seems like MS was the first creepy guy out there with candy, the problem is that kids had to search for the candy from the corners, and at that point it was more effort then it was worth for some. Apple however added it to the phone so that people had instant access to their fix and now all the others see how well this works and wants to have kids coming to them for a fix.
@josh: 75,000 apps "without adding really any functionality?" are you sure man? Have you used some of the apps in the App Store? I've added hundreds of functions to my phone without paying a dime for most of them. Yes there are a bunch of apps that are worthless but there are tons that add very useful functionality to the phone.
You've tasted the sweet sweet candy and now you are addicted, you are getting a taste of all the apps and you are like those children, getting hooked, giving your money for another fix just to make you feel alive. I bet you've spent a lot more on those hundreds of apps than you realize, because really, how much thought do you put into spending a buck or two?
But iFart will never use the stolen USB vendor ID to sync its app!
Can you say the same for the App Catalog's apps? :)
@ Josh
ARE you high on shrooms? just curious?
@Josh
Look, I got to tell you, it is a freaking drug. It makes no difference if the App is useful or not, it doesn't change the fact its like a drug. Actually the iPhone and I suspect all the other modern smart phones, like Pre etc are like drugs.
They do too much, are always with you, can supply you with instant info on anything, connect you to everything and then offer you downloadable, compact, free or very cheap experiences and services.
I can't remember a platform for which I purchased nearly 200 applications in 1 year of owning it, its ridiculous.
I hope this is one of many more to come........
WOOO AIR HOCKEYYY
It's like pong but, it's not.... o_O
@ Platinum_Skeet
But where are the solo cups filled w/ cheap beer, balls, and silly drunk girls trying to distract you while you shoot?
...
Oh, that other kind of pong.
@ Slick
whoa, those must be some BIG solo cups!
LOL'ing
Bring on the premium fart apps!
doesnt this thing cost 99 cents in the iphone app store? im just sayin
Doesn't AT&T charge $40 more a month for the iphone plan, than Pre users pay? I think Pre users can handle an app that costs a buck more with all the cash they are saving . Just sayin'....
Besides that, the iPhone does have a huge advantage in number of users right now. In order to be profitable on the development effort, they might need to charge more, the whole economy of scale thing.
If more than 4 or 5 people had bought the Pré then the apps would have been cheaper no doubt. Palm has to make money off of something you know...
Actually I think it's free in iPhone AppStore...and there are like 75,000 other apps...
Oh yeah 75000 apps, too bad I am too old to run each of it - one.at.a.time.
Only in the USA, only in the usa....
The rest of the world is kicking ass and taking names
Then again, the Pre is still USA only so its moot, though in AU I would suggest that the Pre when it lands will have the same plans as the iPhone.
Why?
Because the iPhone is available from every carrier and can be bought unlocked and outright.
Poor ol usa, sigh.....
aaaaactually, it's on Bell in Canada
haha I soooo just looked at the app cat by chance and saw this
more apps now....I'm not too sure about these prices
I couldn't be more excited about this. I'm a huge fan of the Pre and webOS but $1.99 for an Air Hockey app seems a bit much, especially when you're trying to attract new customers and the iPhone app crowd.
Here's a thought Palm: Take a note from Android and provide a 24-hour return policy for all App purchases.
One down, 24999 to go.
Don't make me spear you with your own tusks.
You know I'm playin'
Correction paid app not paid apps.
Wait a minute. What about that Palm developer that said that Palm apps couldn't be sold elsewhere and you had to fill up and scan 10 pages of legal documents and stuff? Was it all just BS?
@people who are saying that the Pre is lame for having one app, and bragging that the Apple App Store has like a bagillion:
Yes, the App Store has lots and lots of applications (though only a few are actually useful) and it's a good catalog (without some additions that would make it better thanks to Apple), but I'm kind of hoping the App Catalog will actually compete with the App Store... it might force some common sense into Apple when it comes to App Approval. (I'm afraid the App Catalog will never kick off as much as the App Store has due to the App Store being used on the iPod Touch too, and the Dual Unicorn Powered Apple Tablet... but nvm)
It's a bit, no actually a total fail to say only a few are useful. You must not have looked at the Appstore and are just being a troll
hungry hungry troll, watch the comments roll.
I'm the king of ghetto iHockey!
cool story bro
Yep, confirmed, same app by same company is .99 on iPhone. Lolz.
Volume discount.
They'll sell 100,000 copies on iPhone, 1000 on Pre.
I don't think it works that way, an app is an app is an app.
What does it matter? At the end of the day, Pre users are still being charged twice as much.
@Walrus
Really? So remind me again, what are the iphone's pricing plans compared with the pre's?
We aren't talking about plans. We are talking about Apps.
2nd App:
"What Wants to Be a Millionaire" for $4.99
Same as the iPhone, not bad, although there is a free lite version of the app available for the iPhone.
Very true, carry on.
Block Drop another $4.99 game. Already these games are over priced. Hopefully nobody buys these so the developers will lower these prices.
Yeah, $4.99 is a little more than I’m willing to pay for impulse gaming purchases. If I actually played the games more or had more free time on my hands, it might be worth the investment. Primarily I use my Pre for business…
...and again, Bell is making us wait. No update to 1.2.1 and no paid apps. sigh... Hey Bell, get your sh*t together!!
WOW, you guys are getting ripped, Block Drop for iPhone .99 cents.
WOW, you are getting ripped, unlimited everything plan for Palm Pre is $69.99.
Honestly, I could care less if the Pre has a billion applications or not. Eventually support will pickup for the phone as Sprint’s contract runs up. I’m just happy that I pay $53.00 a month for my service which now includes unlimited mobile to mobile on ANY network.
Here comes Cracked Pre Apps
the app store is down
increase the memory storage on the Pre and I will buy one today. As of now I'm thinking of Blackberry Tour
Looks like developers are trying to make hay while the sun shines. I would expect prices to drop soon
Just as an update, as of 7:45pm Eastern, there are 17 new apps in the Catalog.
The paid ones are:
Air Hockey- $1.99
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire- $4.99
BlockDrop- $4.99
WeatherBug Elite- $1.99
GolfPinFinder- $9.95
Checkers Pro- $0.99
Mine Search- $0.99
Here I Am- $0.99
Not all the most useful apps, but not a bad start either.
Bell users will have to wait for this, hopefully not too long.
HOWEVER, I am a little concerned that we Bell users have not yet received the 1.2.1 update, there is no reason for it, and hopefully it wont become standard that we canadians have to wait for patches like 1.2.1
@ Slick
whoa, those must be some BIG solo cups!
LOL'ing
HUGE bug on the App Catalog was letting things be downloaded for free, and in all honesty, Palm was absolutely ridiculously stupid for not thinking this through.
Everything has been pulled while they fix it. The fix would be simple, so hopefully it won't take too long.
Skype!
Where is my Skype Support?
The best app so far just hit, Card Ace
Free online Texas hold em
add me...... HoldEmDude
as of right now all paid apps have been pulled... some security bug. glad i didn't put in my credit card info yet
It's not a credit card security bug at all. Don't worry, if you put in your credit card information, that's entirely safe.
The security issue is for developers. As I mentioned above, there's a huge bug that allowed paid apps to be downloaded for free, even if you hadn't bought them before. That's the bug they're working on fixing, nothing about your CC number.
Hey,air hockey is back! Oh,and epic failure!
Love the Pre, excited about these paid apps, but i don't know about these prices! The VLC Remote app is $4.95 on the app catalogue and I checked the apple app store, and it's only $2.99 there...what's up with that?!? I don't know who sets the prices, but if it's Palm and they want to compete, they need to lower these prices!!
