Sony's PlayStation Motion Controller now codenamed Sphere?

Sony may still have officially been using the less-than-imaginative "Motion Controller" name for its, um, motion controller at the Tokyo Game Show last month, but it looks like some developers working with the technology weren't sticking as close to the script, and may have revealed the project's proper codename. As Joystiq notes, Sega producer Yasuhito Baba referred to the device as "Sphere" during an interview at the show, and Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi also seemed to respond to the "Sphere" name without missing a beat when asked if Gran Turismo would support the peripheral. So, certainly less of a mouthful, and not exactly the worst of names if true -- in fact, it's such a good codename that none other than Microsoft has already adopted it for one of its projects.

lol, considering Sony's branding marketing teams previous efforts, It wouldn't surprise me if they end up calling "Swollen Dildo Shock 2"... you know, just to catch people's attention.

Natal can't be better. Waving empty hands around is never going to be fun.
Personally, I think that WiiMote is better motion controller. At least all demos for Sony Wand I have seen to date were lame.
I guess Nintendo as usually patented crap out of WiiMote making sure that we wouldn't see consistent motion controls over all consoles for quite some time. Same mistake as with button names on the classical controller in making... :(

"Sphere" is quite difficult to pronounce for non-native English speakers...
Not every culture has to pronounce words the same way.
Why not just code name it "litigation". I am sure it will spawn a lot of that as other companies will claim some kind of infringement..

I kinda like it. Sounds cool. Unlike snowleopard2333,,, I think I would feel more awkward without any controller at all on me rather than something that's pretty much a wii remote. I'm sure they will both be fun, but only time will tell.

I think that the 360 as well as PS3 are doing very well as in inventing new technology, 360's Natal and now this dido Sony as well as Microsoft. Wii is a little fun but the graphics and tech is nowhere near PS3 and 360.

Nobody who doesn't visit this site is going to be able to tell the difference between this and a wiimote's capabilities. At least with natal you can see what the difference is. The wii is in the middle ground of these two and I doubt either will be able to knock it off its pedestal.
