It's a day before CEATEC officially kicks off, but
Toshiba's getting a head start on the news, dishing out all the deets on its
Cell-powered Cell Regza LCD TV, now officially due out in Japan in early December. The 55-inch, 240Hz display boasts a mighty impressive 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio, self-congruency technology for improved picture detail on the edges, a peak luminance of 1250cd/m², and LED backlits dividing the screen into 512 distinct areas. A 7-speaker sound bar lies just below the display. Want more? How about eight-window simultaneous multi-display, an Opera-based web browser, DLNA, and a 3TB hard disk drive, 2TB for "time-shift" recording recording up to 26 hours of programs, up to eight channels simultaneously. There's a sizable box on display, too, which seems to be where the Cell hardware is being housed. Curious about price? If we heard correctly, the retail price is expected to be around 1,000,000 yen, or around US $11,140. We just heard their sales target is leaning on the conservative side, about 1,000 units pushed each month.
If that's not forward-thinking enough, Toshi's also outlining its future concepts, dubbed Cell Regza Next. Those four include a 3D set, a 4K2K version that upcoverts 1080p to 3840 x 2160 resolution, a 46-inch model integrating its Cell Box dedicated TV tuner and HDD, and a 37-inch that works as a home network server. It looks like we'll be getting some hands-on time with the 55X1 shortly, but in the meantime, one more pic and video after the break.
Let me be the first to say "Holy Crap"
Damn.. u beat me.
did he say first!!?
I sure see it in his post!
STONE HIM!!
I see what you did there ... cleeeever ...
exactly what i was thinking. that is such an impressive tv. sony needs to put the cell in their tvs.
I WANT ONE OF THESE BABIES!!!
I am scared of this MONSTER
thats what she said!
holy shit, 8 simultaneous screens. That's like a news junkies crack cocaine. Now I can finally pretend I have a news room behind me while I blog
Everyone and then a new TV shows up with either higher refresh or higher contrast. But this shit is insane. 8-channel recording...3TB, Assuming this isn't priced to oblivion I would like to purchase one as my 42" seems abit dated...already.
It will be priced to oblivion.
Holy Sh*t!
Pss... I dont have to worry, Santa will put one in my living room.
if the tv can do the 4k res native for pc it would own for gaming. hopes the 4k one does 3d as well
yea cause game devs are having a hell of a time getting the ps3 to play nice but im sure getting a second cell in a tv to process in tandem with the ps3 will be a walk in the park
It would be amazing if it's cell could work with a PS3s cell to render games at higher resolutions than 1080o...
/|\ up there, wanted to post here
Way to go Tosh. Who needs blue ray when you've got 3TB storage! An integrated bittorrent would be nice, though (;. To download backups of purchased hd-dvds, of course!
3840 x 2160 resolution...
anything capable of producing this kind of resolution? So far as i knew, highest resolution off a computer graphics card was 2560x1600, but i suppose that's just consumer cards anyway. Anyone know if the medical/graph design cards are capable of more?
Try 7680x3200.

Cell... you monster! All that power, and instant transmission to boot. The universe is doomed!
Oh, hi Gohan.
oh hi...
Or, you could buy a 60" plasma to get a bigger, better picture, then build a high end HTPC, and still save like $4000.
The power of the CELL is getting noticed..
Did Sony saw the future ?
first Blu-Ray, and now the CELL.
no, the cell is finally doing what its design is optimized for...
I would say it was Toshiba that saw the future when they bought up sonys stake in cell. It is a little surprising though that it has taken this long to get it doing what it was designed to do.
So Toshiba saw the future of CELL but not their HD-DVD ?
weird..
It won't be long enough for Sony to put CELL on their Bravias too..
Actually HD-DVD was an excellent format. Bluray won due to the financial clout of the consortium rather than due to being technically better.
Plus you could say the same thing about sony and not seeing the future of minidisc or betamax.
Yep, the same thing happened between VHS and BETA...

Finally a monitor to take advantage of my computer. Also badass for TV. Now I can watch adultswim, comedy central, surf the web and play PS3/360/Wii all at the same time.
You must get all the chicks.
I'm married so.....
i usually do not do more than one thing at a time since i am not usually an octopus
When you work and have a woman there isn't much time in the day for hobbies or any freetime at all.
"I'm married so....."
.... it would take a lot more than this to numb the pain.
"I'm married so....."
.... eight screens for late nights alone.
"I'm married so....."
.... i can't finish my thought because she's watching. She's always watchi...
Croly Hap!
I like where this is going... TVs seem to have stagnated a little over the past few years. 1080p is the norm for a new set, and most manufacturers seems to be scrimping on quality etc to get lower prices. OLED is taking its sweet time, 3D with glasses is a gimmick... there was almost nothing to look forward to!
Cell "f" satisfaction with eight screens of porn and in 3D - make it bigger though - 55" is so last year! Size matters especially when plastering 8 windows up. Looks like Idiocracy will become a reality.
We should form a coalition urging people not to buy this so that they'll be forced to drop the price so we can buy it. Not the best plan, but what the heck. Or we can always steal one.
I know it's HD, but only 26hours record time? Color me not impressed. This is G1 Tivo all over again.
Seems like we're finally getting the consumer version of the multi-channel TV from Back To The Future Part II. This article claims that we already had it with "Sports Mix" from DTV; Finally we can pick our own -8- channels..Yow! Makes me wonder, will it have dual M-card support for digital cable?
