Verizon removes gloves, begins 'There's a map for that' anti-AT&T ad campaign (video)
Ouch. If you've been waiting for another flare up in the old carrier wars, here you have it. Turning Apple's "there's an app for that" slogan on its ear, Verizon has introduced a campaign touting its network coverage. The ads -- which highlight the company's new tongue-in-cheek "there's a map for that" catchphrase against tuneful, chirpy music -- also boast that Verizon's 3G blanket is a whopping five times the size of AT&T's. Does this do anything to dispel the idea that Verizon and Apple may be getting together for that phantom tablet? Who knows, but it's fun to watch the fireworks. Check out the full commercial after the break.

Agreed, they literally have nothing that someone interested in gadgets would be interested in.
5x times the coverage? There's a fee for that.
Here in NJ verizon is pretty good, unfortunately at home the signal is zero bars for me, but that's not the case in most places here.
My choice not to use verizon hasn't really been signal or speed orientated, it's phone related.
I like to use multiple unlocked phones, something that is just too difficult on verizon.
They need to get some type of system going where you can just pull a card and move on to a new phone any time you want.
Their phones and phone choices are just too restrictive for me.
I'd be on Verizon this second.
If I could just pick up an unlocked Sony Ericsson, or Nokia and use it on there. :|
The thing about AT&T is, GSM. CDMA is shit.
N900 for Verizon? Didn't think so.
And Tmobile sucks too. I was on their network previously.
Hell. I hate AT&T. They all suck.
Wow - AT&T must really be putting the hurt on VZ with them advertising like this - bottom line they (VZ) have a CDMA network that effectively is only good in the US - so all the good phones are developed for GSM - the global standard. Additionally what those maps don't tell you is that VZ probably covers 90% of the US population with that map and AT&T probably covers 88% of the US population with their map - so while the picture looks nice in reality the difference to 99% of the users is effectively the same.
The map for Verizon is incorrect. Case in point, upstate NY. I'll be the first to say Verizon has better coverage, but that map would have you believe that you can get 3g service in the Adirondack mountains when it's hard enough to get *any* coverage up there. 50% of upstate is outside of Verizon coverage because it's wilderness or farmland, but that map would have you believe that it's covered.
Verizon is obviously using it's enhanced digital map ( ISDN speeds where not EVDO ) vs At&t's high speed data network. It's downright sleazy. Looking at their site they have stopped allowing people to see where their EVDO and non-EDVO coverage areas, instead calling it "Broadband" access ( this is why Verizon wanted to reclassify "Broadband" ).
if you look at the map Verizon displays in the video next to the guy it has a lot less 3G than the one they put next to at&t.
The map that Verizon is showing next to at&t is displaying their voice coverage too, which is really unfair.
@ Curly ERic- I agree with you 100% if you look at the map Verizon displays in the video next to the guy it has a lot less 3G than the one they put next to at&t.
The map that Verizon is showing next to at&t is displaying their
voice coverage too, which is really unfair.
This is funny, all i do with my phone is play rock band and watch youtube videos.
oh wait, there a 5X More map for that!
I really like switching devices based on mood and occasion without having to call the carrier and go through the whole down-programming bit.... Beauty of using the Global standard on AT&T.... Throw that in with faster "3G" at 7.2 mbps and simultaneous voice and data... On top of all that, the only thing those maps prove is that Verizon has their slower 3G data in areas where no one lives, or if they do, it's on some indian reservation or something.
Although I'm not a fan of VZW or anything, I got to hand it to them, this is win.
Shows how much of a fail AT&T is.
Well, I live in the suburbs of Birmingham, Alabama and drive in to the big ham every day. I also drive to other suburban areas on the weekend, and I can tell you that the verizon map is a lie, I don't have coverage in some areas that just doesn't make since. I'm also not on 3g alot of the time. According to the map Alabama is completely covered...
And yet neither of these shitty companies have service here. So even if I could afford $70 a month for an iPhone, I can't make phone calls with it. You'd think that in this day and age we would be able to easily cover the entire continent. But no, it's about as shitty as DSL coverage (and even DSL is shit compared to cable and fiber optic).
Wow that's funny Alaska doesn't even have Verizon but they have coverage.
LMAO @ derX
Aaron: maybe they have a keg? :)
As a long time Verizon customer, I can say their coverage is awesome however, their phone selection SUKS!
I love a good bar fight! Let's see more! There is nothing better to a free market economy to drive better technology at lower prices. For the consumer it's a win-win. Imagine if we brought some competition to health care?
Had AT &t - it was crappy now have Verizon, love it! The I-phone is not enough to make me ever go back either! I have the enV2, my kids have Envy 3 & we all love them! My husband has the I-phone & it is the only thing about AT & T that is worth any kudos.
It's funny, I have a cottage in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan, and they don't have EVDO coverage..
The ad is showing their call network not their data network.
FYI.
Ok, great, but to be fair, AT&T's coverage area is not that bad. And really they're trying to mock Apple because the
"there's an app for that line" is not AT&T's. Besides, BlackBerry Storm failed.
Fun Fact: There are more iPhones and iPod Touches than Sprint/Verizon has customers.
VDubb- It looks like a really great answer, but could you give it to us (who don't know 3/4 of the terms you used) plain and simple, in 25 words or less? Thanks.
WHAT I WOULD BE WONDERING IS WHY VERIZON IS LAYING OFF AND AT@T IS HIRING ? YOU CAN CLAIN YOU COVER ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SAY BUT THEN TRY TO USE VERIZON OUT WEST . I'D SAY SOME 5 YEAR OLD AT VERIZON GOT AHOLD OF A RED CRAYON .
Verizon sucks there prepaid phones coverage is outrageous plus a 25.00 activation fee is uncalled for i was an alltel customer they had great prices but the crappy verizon just had to take them over... yuck ...i will be looking for another prepaid phone with better rates. watch out for the highly priced verizon definately not worth it
Verizon has the greatest coverage hands down...dumbest thing they ever did was NOT getting the iPhone.
One time, I made a call to a cruise ship that my kid was on...about 25 miles off the California coast- loud and clear on the network.
AT&T HAS ALWAYS BEEN JUNK, HORRIBLE SERVICE, TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. OFF THE CHARTS HORRIBLE BILLING SYSTEM. THIS CANCER RIDDEN COMPANY IS A THORN IN THE BUSINESS WORLD. THE ONCE GREAT AT&T HAS BEEN DRIVEN INTO THE GROUND BY HORRIBLE DECISIONS THROUGHOUT THE LAST 20 YEARS. THE WORST BEING EX IBM CRAZY ARMSTONG THAT DROVE AT&T INTO THE SEWER AND EVENTUALLY CAUSING IT TO BE BOUGHT UP BY SOUTHERN BELL. THAT CROOK ARMSTRONG SHOULD BE IN JAIL FOR COSTING SHARE HOLDERS AND FORMER EMPLOYEES BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN STOCK LOSSES.

MediaCurves.com conducted a study among 403 Americans who viewed the new “There’s a map for that” Verizon Wireless ad. Results showed that one-third of non-Verizon Wireless customers reported they would be likely to switch their wireless phone carrier to Verizon Wireless. An overwhelming majority of respondents (94%) reported that the Verizon Wireless ad was effective, with 39% indicating that is was ‘extremely effective’ and 51% reporting that it was ‘somewhat effective’.
