Marketplace is live on Windows Mobile 6.5 phones

Did you pick up an AT&T Pure over the weekend? Yeah, then you might want to spin up Windows Marketplace on your new Windows Mobile 6.5 handset. It's live and dancing right now a full day before any of this was supposed to launch -- not that we're complaining.

I saw you saying this in another topic.
Stop typing, your about as funny as aids.
Please help me out. I'm getting a winmo phone here shortly. The LG Incite. (was free)
I've never used winMo ever, so I have no idea how everything works, the main thing I want to ask is if there are any specific things I should do. Can you like reformat it with a clean version of winmo? Or get a new UI or something, I'm not much of a cellphone kinda guy. Please help!
XDA and PPCGeeks will become your new best friend. Do some searching over there for a new ROM. It's the only way to use WinMo.
How does Microsoft plan to verify if the purchased app is suitable for a particular device?
Apps like Zenonia are not suitable for all phones.
There should be a guidelines or categorization of devices and the apps they are capable of running.
YAWN
move along troll their aren't any shit holes here where you can laid you misguided head
David Letterman's grandpa is alive?
I don't get it? :(
SWEET! I've been dying to get WinAmp and Duke Nukem 3D on my WinMo!
Is there anything stopping you from using a stylus on the HTC Tattoo or the Nokia N97/5800 then?
I am waiting for the 6.5 upgrade to come out on my sprint Touch Pro 2.... Hurry up!!!
You dont have to wait go over to PPCgeeks.com and they have a .cab to install on your Pro 2 to get this going. I allready got google voice dialer :-)
DR House
and those three years ago OS has features which your iPhone doesn't have... probably only app which is not there is fart app...
Wait, what? "Operator store"? Can wireless carrier lock this thing down then, only offering programs they allow?
Probably. Step back, it would make sense.. just won't feel fair on the punter.
No, not to lock down anything, but to give the operators a place to hawk their own specific wares. Afterall it is their network.
hey look it's DR HOUSE
hey I finally know why you picked that name
because you wanna be just like him
an asshole who has genius and pose and can actually use reason when he speaks
yet you fail to hit all those point except the the asshole troll part
sigh* kids think they can be anything like their parents told them they can
what will we teach them next
Yeah, the guy is obviously a troll, yada yada yada, but this "fart app lol" crap is getting kinda old, not to mention it was never actually funny in the first place (unless you are an Apple hater). There are tons of awesome and useful iPhone apps out there.
You know what's ironic? MS, Palm, and Google would KILL to have the App Store's library, crapware and all. Shocking, I know.
@House
I wouldn't judge anyone or anything against the iphone features and services like that. You know how long it has taken to get basic mobile features. MS has been at it far longer with stuff like Voice Commander before your iphone even existed. iphone still can't get something like that right.
Its downloading on my HTC Touch Viva right now. XDA 6.5 Roms work.
First impressions: They did a terrible job of making it usable on QVGA, which isn't very wise as one of there 6.5 launch devices is QVGA. (HTC Touch2) Some of the screen elements are way too big making for some unnecicary scrolling.
Screenshot: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a260/XirXes/XIYLRom4market.jpg
It looks the same on my Touch Pro with VGA screen. I think they may have misinterpreted "touch friendly" as "big ass UI components"...
In all fairness though, I'm running a hacked ROM on a phone that didn't ship with 6.5. If Marketplace actually ships on a device looking like that, then I'd say it's fair game for mockery.
@XIYL
Thank you for sharing! Crazy I have to rely on a commenter for more information on the topic? Off to XDA I go, haven't been in years :)
@Thomas
Is this it? Will there be some sort of follow-up with hands-on review?
Yeah 6.5 ROMs work :-D
Having a look through now but can only see 50 odd apps so far. I wonder if more will be added before official launch tomorrow?
Not really inclined to Download/Purchase any of what I see right now.
Will purchases be available for re-download i.e. I have re-flashed my ROM now can I re-download all my purchased apps?
Yeah, they associate your downloads with your Live ID. They force you to log in before you can download anything.
XIYL @
You mean like Apple forces you to log into iTunes before you download? Errr I dunno out you but it makes sense to log in. Kinda like how Steam,EA,Apple,Xbox Live,PSN and Bigpond just off the top off my head? How else would you suggest they track and record your purchases?
I didn't mean to make it sound unpleasant, I was just saying that you have to log in first.
While I see the purpose of an "apps" store for any modern mobile device, Windows Mobile has actually had a store for quite a while. It's archaic as heck, but you open it in a browser and download any of the applications right from there. So I've had access to the store for a while now. On top of that, the best part of WinMo has always been the ability to install anything you want-- provided you have the files. I can download from any website I choose and install them without having to go through an app store.
I know, I know-- not having a single repository where all apps must flow though, requiring you to meet strict standards just isn't popular these days. Call me crazy-- but sometimes, I think it's more fun for people who are tech-savvy to have a leg up on people who simply buy the "in" device. Sometimes, it's better to not force customers to use your store to buy software that you didn't make, but have complete domination over.
Here's hoping that with the introduction of a Marketplace, we don't see another store whose policies allow them to determine what can and cannot be sold, thereby forcing you to choose between going through their proprietary software or jailbreaking your OS to allow you to install anything you want...
WinMo having a store is okay-- it will allow less technologically minded people have access to applications they want...at the same time, however, I hope it remains true to its' roots and allows for any custom-baked ROM and any third-party applications you want to be installed with ease. Adaptability has been the thing that lets more tech-savvy people use WinMo more effectively than other products for years.
I dunno man, I just can't agree with you on this. Yeah, WinMo has had the apps for some time, but how much of a pain in the ass is it to GET said apps, and get them on the device? Your average non-Marketplace apps goes like this.
1 - Google the app you want (ex: "instant messaging windows mobile")
2 - Go from site to site, being able to check nothing but screenshots
3 - Download cab, or exe, or whatever
4 - Install via activesync or cab.. depending..
5 - Try each one
6 - Uninstall the one you don't want.
And that's not even the half of it if you need to delve into XDA or PPCG what with the immense amount of static in the threads. The App Store method is easier, and has proven very successful. I for one am extremely excited to see this store flourish.
Um...that's not much of a hassle...well, maybe to me it's not. An App store is great if you want a popular app, or are looking for a "quick" solution. Personally, I'm the kind of guy who will do the steps you outlined above as an assurance that I'm getting the most for my devices. App stores make it easy-- doing the work yourself means it's done RIGHT. It's harder, and more user-intensive...but that's why I like it.
Don't get me wrong-- I think it's a good thing to offer an App store-- my point is simply that if it goes from "hey, you CAN get Apps from our store" to "hey, you HAVE to get Apps from our store or violate the EULA for your phone", then it's gone too far. Apps stores should be a way to browse quickly and download lots of demos and find the most popular App of a given type. But the option should ALWAYS be there for those that wish to write and use code that is forced to meet the arbitrary standards of the phone manufacturer.
IE, it should be a drive from one state to the next-- those who're looking to get from A to B quickly can use the highway. Those looking for the scenery should be allowed to drive the back roads.
"IE, it should be a drive from one state to the next-- those who're looking to get from A to B quickly can use the highway. Those looking for the scenery should be allowed to drive the back roads."
100% agreed.
Is this only for Windows Mobile 6.5, or can other devices access this store? I hope that the Touch Pro 2 can be upgraded to WinMo 6.5, because it would be nice to be able to access these features.
Touch Pro 2 will be updated to 6.5 but you have to wait for HTC to make it available.
6.1 devices will eventually get Marketplace but later this year.
Amazing, works on my Touch HD. Though here in the Netherlands there is only an amazing 4 apps to download.
Great, wonderful, now get some games on my Zune HD please.
GTFO, Spammer!
DIAF
Wow, can't wait to download games from Electronic Arts / EA Sports, Konami, Sega, Id, Taito,
oh... nevermind.
I hope this Marketplace thing works. Hunting for Apps for mmy WinMo device can be a pain. Thank God for XDA Developers.
My favorite WinMo Apps are
PocketCM Image viewer and Keyboard
PointUI Home 2 (although TF3D looks way better can't wait to get that Touch Pro 2)
Skyfire
and Amiga Invasion
Google Maps is useful but not as good as google earth for the iPhone
Same with the facebook App.
Really a lot of winmo apps need to be updated to accomodate flick scrolling.
Don't even get me started on location based social networking apps. Gypsii is impossible. That might be the one thing I am a little jealous of the iPhoners for. That and if they ever get those augmented reality apps going. I doubt any current winmo phones are capable of that.
Guess thats the price we pay for not running with the crowd. All I know is my Blackberry couldn't even synch with my corporate exchange email and that was the deal breaker for me. My winmo phone synched all that and my calendars both google and outlook in a snap and that is worth everything to me.
The touch HD2 and the Samsung phone now have the digital compass so hopefully those developing the augmented reality apps will see the benefit of developing for winmo as well as iPhone
can i use my xbox live credits on this winmo marketplace?
That would actually be kinda cool/useful.
They were supposed to do that so you could use your MS points on XBL, Zune, and here.
Even tough winmo has plenty of apps already in the wild I am glad to see that the marketplace is currently not full with most of those. The market place need to be restricted to newer/redesigned apps with well thought out interfaces.
There is no street fighter on there though which is disappointing (not sure how great it would be on a touch screen phone though).
Not that I thought it wouldn't, but I can verify that Marketplace is open for 6.5.1 Touch Pro users (Psyki 090409 user)
So, I know I'm responding to my own topic here, but does anyone with a non-official 6.5 (or 6.5.1) device notice how effing SLOW the scrolling on the Marketplace or apps from the Marketplace are? Maybe it's the ROM I'm running or the fact that I'm doing 6.5 on a device not meant for it, but ouch man. I know it's day one, but I'm not quite feelin' it yet. Too many paid apps that cost WAY too much. I guess I'm just used to my XDA alternatives that are free or close to it.
Again, not sure if this is my ROM or what, but it also seems like the sensitivity is WAY high on the store. I have my pressure sensitivity low (feather touch OS, pressure for Manila), I find myself having to press harder (not like forcefully, but a firm touch is required).
I hope most devs go this route. While I appreciate being able to sideload whatever I want, I have to admit searching thousands of threads with hundreds of pages each on XDA and PPCG has really gotten old in the face of the stores on the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android. I just hope MS doesn't have the same intrapolitical issues with developers like other app stores have, because if every dev went through Marketplace, I don't even wanna THINK about the hundreds of thousands of apps it would have. I lied.. of course I wanna think about that ;)
It isn't slow scrolling for me (STX 6.5.1 on sprint diamond), but they need to figure out how to get the icons to be pre-loaded or something... loading them as they are scrolling is a little annoying.
@DR House
Last time I checked, opening up stores and trade with money is part of human's evoluation..... and not another Apple so call "innovation".
ok, so obviously I'm lost right now. When I look at the page that I thought was supposed to go to the marketplace, I get "access is denied". Where are you guys downloading it from?
@ DR House
Okay, so the App Store was live 3 years ago, and WM just caught up. True.
Then again, MMS was available alot more than 3 years ago, and Apple just caught up.
...shhhhh, you can't say that here. Anything Apple does, even if it is long after others, is "innovation".
Normally, they throw a lower case "i" in front of it to make it cool and innovative at the same time! Not only do you get MMS, a technology that has been in use since 2002, you now get iMMS... only on iPhone. You get nothing new, just an extra "i" and an Apple GUI
Marketplace server not available at 9:30am Monday morning. Running WM6.5 (EnergyROM) on AT&T Fuze. Marketplace software downloaded and installed, but then failed to connect to the database server. Kept getting "server not available" after multiple retries.
While true, let's give em the ol' welcome vs a nasty gloat, the more competiton in a market place, within degree, is better.
I hope some great apps come, in particular ones that link winmo and iPhone to share contacts, maybe local Bluetooth games even, edgy shit.
I also hope that marketplace tries on more interesting ways of cataloging apps, Apple could do with some lessons.
the reason all these other OS have app stores is because they're locked down like shit. Winmo was beautiful you can grab any app from anywhere. why do we need an app store?
Same for me, same ROM (EnergyROM Stardard 09/06/09) on same phone...
Reply was for grmcgee, my mistake...
And there were several WinMo market places way before Apples... who's copying who again?
Yes but 4 years ago, iPhone didn't have an app store. Apple believed you would be content with using Apple-only apps. Oh how wrong they were. jailbreaking is the only reason there's even an app store today.
Windows Mobile has had third party apps since the beginning. Apple only allowed third party apps because they thought hackers wouldn't figure out how to jailbreak the iPhone (a failure on Apple's part) and now realizes they can capitalize on it.
Works fine for me on my own cooked Wmo 6.5 rom. I am using base build 5.2.2340.5.4.0
I agree that the 'fart app' meme has worn out its welcome, but you can't ignore the 10s of thousands of 'apps' that are little more than RSS feeds for various sites. Because really, THAT'S what makes the App Store irritating.
So now MS comes rolling in yet again late to the party yelling "me too!" long after the Apple App Store, the Android App Store, and the Pre App store have opened shop. And the MS apps are already starting on the wrong foot selling at completely overpriced values, further ripping off users and discouraging developers alike.
wow, and U_Love_Microsoft? I'd like to see your comments on something you hate....
I thought Microsoft said no 0.99 apps? I see a few of those right now..
I don't see why people are bitching about Microsoft saying "me too" on the app store issue. I mean, not long ago iPhone users started saying "me too" to MMS..video recording..copy and paste....see where I am going here? If you don't like WinMo then simply don't use it!
Hm yeah, I think WinMo is on its way out and into the toilet.
Is Windows Mobile headed for failure?

^^comment of the day so far...
How about Windows Marketplace on Windows Mobile 6.1 as promised? Anyone know anything?
Well, my humble WinMo phone has been doing MMS and recording video for over 3 years. Oh and you can check out Handango or a myriad (oops pretty big word for the apple crowd) of other online stores (that have been around even longer) for tons WinMo and Palm apps (that’s right, WinMo users have a choice of where to purchase their apps from comrade).
