Android could nab second place in mobile operating systems by 2012, says research
Sure, Android is a brand new operating system at a seemingly huge disadvantage to other, more entrenched household names like Windows Mobile or Symbian. Well, all that could change -- at least according to research just released by Gartner, Inc. The company's report claims that Android could claim upwards of 14 percent of the global mobile operating system share by 2012 (it now has less than 2 percent). This would make it the number two (behind Symbian OS) phone OS in the world. The main factors behind this surge, according to Gartner's report, are the fact that Android is a Google-backed proposition, a company which will continue to offer more cloud-computing services and apps which will increasingly draw users into its web. They also note Android's "blend" of app heaviness (making it like the iPhone) combined with the task-mastering of Windows Mobile and BlackBerry smartphones. We'll let you know when Grandma Elly has a Sholes -- that's the real test of success and popularity in our world.

2nd place still means losing to Windows Me
not according to the article..its saying that symbian is the most widespread OS.
And next year is also going to be the year of linux on the desktop... Give me a break! Android is just another linux. Go to Tmobile and play with a hero. Honestly Android sucks and I can't believe Engadget gives it as much love as it does. Google must have deep pockets to plant so many stories here.
Yep, Google pays off Engadget to support their mobile OS.
Go find a tin-foil hat and wait in fear for the alien invasion to come, I'm sure you'll be safe from it.
Most of europe uses symbian, but thats rapidly decreasing as more choices are coming out. It's biggest competitor is by far the iPhone OS. But apples been kinda lazy lately so it probably will take over.
Umm, no.
The Symbian will gain more marketshare just from ever increasing prosessiing power of the low end phones. More and more of them will be S60, at least Nokia phones.
ps. Symbian isn't the number one mobile OS, it's Nokias S40. Symbian is the number one smartphone mobile OS. So, by the 2012 Android might be number 3 phone OS.

I'd like to point out that Ad Mob's stats show Android OS up to 4th place, just one percentage point below RIM, worldwide.
I'm curious to find out why anyone thinks it'll take 3 years for Android to move into second place, considering the number of Android-based phones coming out worldwide through the end of the year, including in China. Nokia's worldwide share is slowly declining while the Asian manufacturers - who appear to have a strong liking towards Android - is increasing.
That admobs statistic isn't sold phones, but datatraffic statistics of admobs network.
gerrrg
You iDiot.
That's not OS marketshare.
THIS is OS marketshare.
http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=910112
It's:
1. Symbian OS
2. RiM OS
3. Windows Mobile
4. iPhone OS
5. Android
6. Palm
You're looking at traffic, NOT marketshare.
Actually, that Gartner report is kinda old. I know because the iPhone passed WinMo a long time ago.
http://www.canalys.com/pr/2009/r2009081.htm
Worldwide it's:
1. Symbian OS
2. RiM OS
3. iPhone OS
4. Windows Mobile
5. Android
6. Palm
In the U.S. it's
1. RIM OS
2. iPhone OS
3. Everyone else.
Detox,
Um No.
That only shows Q2 marketshare.
You are deluding yourself however if you believe for a second that the iPhone has a larger install base than WinMo.
WinMo spanks the iPhone in terms of install base worldwide.
"That only shows Q2 marketshare."
Uh, yeah, right. The iPhone has been outselling Windows Mobile for several quarters now. You think things have gotten worse or better for WinMo since Q2?
WinMo's biggest carrier, HTC, their profit just took an 18 percent dive last quarter.
http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20091006-704340.html
WinMo 6.5 is getting universally bad reviews. WinMo 7.0 isn't coming until late 2010. Dude, WinMo is finished.
Shit, I liked it when it was just a name, just wish Sony Ericsson would add android to there xperia line up.
Xperia 3
Google it
Yeah, i forgot about the X3, but I rather it run on the X2, not a big fan of full touch screen, but your right, my bad.
Gartner is FOS as usual..
True.
You missed the iSuppli report saying that Windows Mobile would be in this position by 2013 with 60 million handsets in use.
Analysts just make shit up.
@m:
The worst part is they get paid to do that.
@10minutehobo
I think that every time I see (I don't actually bother reading) an analyst report/prediction.
@ 10 min hobo
too bad they failed in predicting the recession...
Oh god, someone get a medic, were gonna need it after the apple fanboys arrive.
the thing with Apple is it wont be on any other phones but Apple phones......unless they really thing that the whole world is going to buy an iphone. i guess that is what they are thinking, they sure thought it with the mac computer lol
Yeah, ha ha, you're right. That really worked out terrible for the iPod. Ha ha. Only 225 million sold. Losers. The iPhone is so finished.
"unless they really thing that the whole world is going to buy an iphone."
The numbers don't lie. Fair enough the iPhone is dominating the smart phone market, and you might not be concerned but I know every other handset maker out there surely is. The reason why Android is spreading so fast is because most handset makers know this is the only chance they've got against competing with the iPhone. On the other hand until Palms webos gets on more devices, and on more carriers I don't think Apple has anything to worry about.
Google doesn't charge for Android. They don't sell hardware. They sell ads.
You think Apple wants a massive market-share by giving away their incredible iPhone/iPod touch business?
Priotities....
My favourite part about this article is the large android eating a donut :)
Yeah, The android even sorta looks like homer.....
lol i didnt really even notice
Dale
If Homer was Canadian...
I strongly disagree with this prediction as it is just that... a prediction.
Who knows what the future will bring? Windows Mobile 7 may get 90% of the market share for all we know! Predictions turn out to be false more often than not.
In my personal opinion, I think Web OS and the iPhone's OS will be among the highest in market share. But, then again, who knows what the future holds :). Either way, mobile OS wars are good for consumers in the end.
Both of those OSes won't be close to the top for one sole reason: they are tied down to Palm and Apple products only (respectively).
iPhone OS and Web OS won't go anywhere until they branch out to different hardware manufacturers. It's just too bad for consumers because that will never happen.
The way things are going with WebOS, I'm not so sure. I'd give it another year and track its progress but I highly doubt it will overtake Android the way things are going now.
iPhoneOS might have a chance if Apple spreads out to more carriers and make different form factors (and more affordable models).
Woooooo Open Source!
Go Linux!
Should hopefully be Maemo 1st not Symbian. :) A TRULY open OS. Nokia is playing catch up with the rest of the boys as far as hardware though. Omnia HD2, HTC Leo, and I'm missing another drool worthy phone but I can't remember the name and no it aint the iPhone so don't get too excited.
The Archos phone tablet! yes of course!
i guess they would have arrived at this conclusion, assuming that there won't be any development on the other mobile OSs till 2012... bottom line u really can't predict these things...
Well, I don't know about you guys, but my next phone is either going to be a WebOS or an Android phone.
I know this isn't exactly the right place, but I wish they would put GoogleDocs integration into the next Android build. That would be so awesome. You could download files for offline editting and then it would sync back with the online one when you get back online... I hope someone makes a GoogleDoc app on the Palm Pre soon. Maybe there is one and I haven't noticed it...
Try gdocs- its in the market, and has been a godsend for me.
why don't you tell them http://productideas.appspot.com/#15/e=cf&t=5
Windows Mobile may be a household name but it's not a name associated with functionality, dependability or reliability.
Google is aggressively getting android on as many phones as possible for the sake of just one damn entity:WALL STREET.
Google's claim to fame and high stock price is the fact it can get the advertiser's shit to the masses.
Android=ads ads ads.
Hey did you see Google's stock today? It traded at $517 and some change. Up over 8 bucks before the close of todays trading.
But I love Google. Stop being so ungrateful and a hater. They have done wonderful things for the average techie Joe. They want to give me free spectrum, voip, an "open" OS, open cell phone, a personal PBX, good search results, competition to make M$ get off its ass, they are on a rush to make our planet green, gigs of email storage and a clean interface, a shit load of free services I may never use, etc.....
So what they have ads! You expect them to pull cash out of their ass? and kudos for them and their stocks. I hope they make more cash than Microsoft by 2012 so we can have some balance.
I'll take free ad supported mostly open easily customizable flashable Android over other crap any day thanks |:-D
Weak overated. Only on 2-3 USA cell phones n been out for a year already.
Apps suck on it compared to iPhones 85,000!!
Now that is sick dude! Nokia blows in USA Its brand has lost credibility here in America, kinda like Hyundai. In America we here nokia n immediately think lowend cell phone that in 2 years doesn't have a smartphone that can compare to iphone3gs. It took nokia 28 months after iPhone cane out out to finally roll out their $750 n900. iPhone 3g $49, hmmh I wonder which one will succeed here in America. ?
A $25 dollar nokia comes with symbian os. Incredibly weak.
Concentrate on an iphonekiller already. Android takeover yeah right. I'll believe it when I see it most overhyped os of all times! I've used android g1 plus mytouch. They blow on so many levels compared to iPhone. It's amazing to see how bad apple is schooling raping n dominating. Btw I hate apple n don't own apple computer.
Are you typing on your iPhone? That must explain why you make no sense.
OF ALL TIME!!!!!
I like the name, but I don't think it matches your post at all :/
The world ends in 2012. There's a movie about it coming out soon.
So, they can predict whatever they want. :)
