We finally got a good, hard look at the Verizon-customized version of Samsung's
Omnia II, and we've got good news and bad news: the good news is that the phone's a darker, more reasonable shade in person than it was in
that press shot we'd seen before, but the bad news is that we've confirmed it's running 6.1. Anyone daring to release a 6.1 phone at this point is at serious risk of getting laughed out of the room unless they offer an upgrade path mere minutes afterwards, so we're hoping that by the time this is on shelves, it'll either be running 6.5 out of the box or there'll be an update program announced in conjunction with the release. Otherwise, the display's absolutely phenomenal (indoors, anyhow) and
TouchWiz seems to work as well as it did on the original model, though scrolling through menus got a bit laggy at times -- isn't it kinda weird that a years-old platform can practically max out a circa-2009 device? Check out a quick gallery below.
Why not 6.5?
Quite old news, we've been working on the prototype w/ 6.1 for months.
And it for sure will be WM6.5, we've urged by Samsung to make our app to run on its prototype which already has WM6.5.
Device-wise, I like it better than the heavy-as-brick HTC TP2.
Does it really matter 6.1 or 6.5? They both suck!
BusinessWeek has renmaed 6.5 as Windows Immobile!
That sums things up about WinMo!
I guess I'm the odd one out, but I prefer the later versions of WM6.1 combined with Voice Command (and perhaps PointUI 2). As dated as Microsoft's Voice Command is, I think it's **far** faster to make calls, change settings and launch programs using that than with any other phone UI interface out there [especially if you're using a bluetooth headset].
an incredibly average looking phone.
Why the heck they continue to make phones with connectors on the side??? I want to be able to easily dock my phone to charge, sync and play music. I'm fed up of opening little flaps to access the connector.
Sometimes I really wish I could just slap the product designers.
When will 6.5.1 be on handsets?
When 6.5.0 is done. Just kidding. Check this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/meet/wm65-upgrade.mspx#phoneList
To find out if your phone can be updated, first you need to know which version of Windows Mobile is installed on it.
It list some phones such as:
Phone Manufacturer Expected availability*
Dash 3G HTC Date not yet available
Jack Samsung Date not yet available
Epix Samsung Date not yet available
Omnia 2 Samsung Date not yet available
Ozone HTC Date not yet available
Snap HTC Date not yet available
Touch Pro 2 HTC Date not yet available
Traveler 137 Pharos Date not yet available
Hope it helps. :)
Single LED Flash? Verizon got us on something...
Didn't you guys just crap all over 6.5 and say it's not that different from 6.1?
too late samgsung, the imagio already came out.
What to do?!?!?! Android or this, shoot. Decisions, decisions.
If it doesn't have a keyboard..... why is it as thick as a TP2?
It Isn't as thick as the TP2, the Omnia is 11.9mm.
It's thinner than TP2, and it's much lighter than TP2 which feel and
weigh like a tank
But nothing is as impressive as the TG01 in its super thin body, though the screen is not as impressive
ugh ugh ugh, waiting for Omnia II since forever but 6.1?
Hell it'll be better to wait for the sholes or hope to god HD2 comes to Verizon.
its upgradeable clowney.
Its a shame the phenomenal display only shows 65k colors. Thanks WM.
I want to know what nasty disgusting shameless VerizonWireless crippled or is going to cripple on this fine phone?
well it looks like they replaced midomi for "v cast song id" which they will probably charge for using.
Hardware looks great. Verizon has made it pretty clear they are backing down on crippling and modifying devices back to the stone age.
The past 3 devices to launch have had only a handful of verizon software. The roms are pretty good.
I love how they increased the screen resolution but lowered it to 65K colors and took off the OLED display and removed Symbian for Winmo 6.1 and on top of that lowered the cam to 5mpx. Ughhh Verizon the crippler.
I think you are confusing this phone with the Omnia HD.
WM phones max out at 65k colors. This phone is an AMOLED so I am not sure what you're complaint is there. Symbian was NEVER intended for this device. This phone was originally slated for a 5 megapixel camera and is that way all over the world. So the only two things that have been changed on the phone are going from the cube to the shield for the center button and not being able to get WM 6.5 on this device. From the rumor mill, WM 6.5 may not be running stable enough for Verizon to release it so they are releasing it with 6.1 instead because this phone has had a lot of interest and Samsung is losing out on this investment.
This has nothing to do with Verizon crippling the phone.
O crap... I could of sworn this was the Omnia HD2. Ugh guess that was just wishful thinking on my part. Also I thought they removed the OLED display because the 65k color limitation kind of defeats the purpose.
this thing CDMA/GSM with a Simslot?
No iphonekiller here. Next. Boring. Agree?
What size is the internal memory on this one?
So....Does it have WI-FI Support????
I jumped with excitement seeing this article, thinking it would at least mention a release date :( Been waiting foreverrrrrrrrr
why would you get this when the HD2 is coming in January?
as an iPhone user, I can't wait to get rid of it and hop (back) on the WM bandwagon
yes. the phone looks THAT good.
http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/compare_advresults.php?phones[]=3887&phones[]=3790
TFT vs AMOLED
Capacitive vs Resistive
Compass vs TV Out
157g vs 123g
Those are the differences, left being HD2 right being Omnia. To say they're not comparable is pretty silly, they're practically identical.
whats the internal memory on this....is it 8gb like the 1st omnia?
how about optical mouse....does this have it, i really like the optical mouse on the omnia
i have the imagio now and it almost seems more frills and gadgety then the straight up functional simplicity like the omnia1
