T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition adds 3.5mm jack, fake wood
We'd just assumed that T-Mobile would've written off the myTouch 3G and moved on to other Android-powered endeavors before outright re-engineering the thing, so color us shocked to find out that the carrier has gone back and added a desperately-desired feature -- a genuine 3.5mm headphone jack -- for a new version of the phone later this year. That's just the beginning, though: the new myTouch is actually being released as a special edition in partnership with the guitar experts at Fender, sporting a woodgrain finish (maybe a little too much inspiration from the Ply and Touch Wood over in Japan?), bundled 16GB microSD card, and preloaded music content. There's no word on an exact release date or pricing yet, but the gap between this and the Hero just got a whole lot smaller, didn't it? Check out a shot of the slightly less-interesting front after the break.

never tell a man his wood is fake!
THATS FUNNY AND TRUE
failure.
Yeah! That's terrible! Real, real terrible.
*gets wallet*
They should add 3.5 mm to all the mytouches...
They should TouchMy 3.5mm
....wait a second
Honestly, I would be shocked if the headphone jack didn't quietly filter into regular MyTouch units as well over the next few months. There's no way they would design custom hardware just for a one-off promotion like this, it wouldn't be cost effective. Remember that adding a headphone jack isn't just drilling a hole, it takes up a significant amount of space inside the device and requires HTC to re-engineer the internals to make room. That's not a free service.
They're just not going to announce that all MyTouch phones will have a headphone jack soon because they don't want people to ignore the current stock of phones sitting in stores (and they'd prefer that you pay the premium for this special edition version anyway).
T-mobile marketing blurb:
T-Mobile, for those confident males who don't mind having a pink T emblazoned on your loser WinMo phones.
myTouch runs android... not WinMo. go back to using your mac and iphone for non-business related things.
Funny thing is, T-Mobile has exclusivity on the iPhone (3G/3GS) here in the Netherlands. ;)
AT&T marketing blurb:
iPhone, for those confident male fanboys who don't mind teabagging.
Also, the T-Mobile logo on the MyTouch is all white. double fail
Personally, I enjoy a good teabagging session.
After down voting you here, I went to engadget on my 3.5mm-less MyTouch to down vote you again!
Alright a 3.5mm headphone jack on the new MyTouch bundled with a 16GB microsd card
I think I might just get this phone my contract is up on November so this is great.
Cant wait to experience the Android OS
It should have a 1/4" jack, just because. THEN it'd be worthy of the Fender name. And not mere-wood, but a 3-color sunburst treatment. Actually being able to plug your guitar into it isn't required, but damn that'd be cool.
I dunno, I was thinking rosewood up front and maple with a skunk stripe down the back.
Nah dude, you've got it all wrong. See this is the Squier version MyTouch3G. The Fender version will have real wood and a 1/4" jack. They've already put the Retail Price at 2.1 Million for the SRV-exclusive paint job.
I hope there's a lot of musicians on this forum or you guys will have no idea what I'm talking about. lol.
Now , including features it should have came with to start with! oh yeah shit, lets make it wood, yeah! that will sell
blah
This news is not giving me any 'wood'.....bring on an HTC HD2 powered by Android......
HTC HD2 is powered by Windows Mobile.
Which is probably why he said bing on "an" HTC HD2 powered by android. Are we asking for to much hear. Why does winmo get a fine piece of Tech like the HTC HD2? And Where did t-mobile get the nerve to put out a phone that only has headphone jacks on the limited addition version.WTF.
HTC Dragon perhaps?
Sorry Chris, But with a lead-in of a fake wook Fender Mytouch this is a must see kind of story...and yet i don't see nothing but trademarked corporate logos. FAIL
Story is useless without photos.
I really dont find the lack of headphone jack that annoying. I just keep the tiny adapter on my headphones and Im good to go
Just because you like non standard hardware and extra accessories doesnt mean we all have to.
Penis joke?
Seriously, right?
myTouch + wood = Touch myWood.
There. Done. Sigh, what are the engadget comment pages coming to these days...
Methinks I'll seek out warranty reconciliation for this idiocy. Love the Mytouch but I could find a lot of uses for the jack.
Heh I bet ;)
But...can I use it to play Rock Band?
Show me a picture or it didnt happen.
fail.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA FAIL
Still no multitouch...........
Hmm looks pretty.
I wouldn't be caught dead with this.
Very weak.
That looks awful. :\
you mean they FINALLY figured out that customers dont buy stuff when you ignore what they want? ? ?
AMAZING...WOW...
I think this actually looks pretty damn slick.
I love the way the back looks, but it's pretty tacky in the front IMHO.
Only person that would buy this is someone with a station wagon or a PT cruiser with the wood on the side...
I own neither but would certainly buy this. I guess musicians don't count though! :/
You're trying too hard, it's just not believable. Keep reaching for that rainbow, though. I wish you luck in your iPhone fanboy imitation endeavors.
Is that just soooo ghetto...but then TMo is a bit ghetto. I better everyone in my neighborhood will soon have one.
The backplate looks fantastic but they probably would have been better off with a solid color on the front.
That's exactly what I was thinking...the front is weak but the back rocks.
I'm a musician and I would buy this based ONLY on its looks. Problem is the phone itself is shit..
If they released a skin for another phone then I'd pick that up.
What happens if there's a fender bender?
That's awful. It's not even the way Fender typically sunbursts their guitars - though their foreign subsidiaries have occasionally done "foto flame" finishes like this that are derided by most Fender guitar players. This is more Gibsonesque. It's almost blasphemous to make a Fender-branded phone look like this.
No more blasphemous then branding a smartphone with the name Fender. Theres no tie-in there whatsoever between musical instruments and smartphones.
Hope it comes with Catherine Zeta Jones ***knock on wood***
When did t-mobile start making phones?
Flame Top > stupid Ply or TouchWood. Good job Fender. Way to get even richer!
kiss my ax
I dig it! Only thing better than fake wood grain would be REAL wood.
me looks great :D
bye
It's apropos that your name has a not found return code.. much like your post soon...
This is the only time I hate giving my phone contract to my Mom to use in our family plan (I buy my phones unlocked). Now I gotta spend atleast $500 (if not more since these are a limited edition). Having an accessory dongle to use a 3.5mm headphone sucks on my ATT Fuze.
EFFING A MAN, I JUST bought a MyTouch. As an aspiring young guitarist, die-hard Fender fan, and someone who enjoys 3.5mm jacks, this THUROUGHLY PISSES ME OFF. -__O
Fender guitars aren't really known for the nice woods like Gibson is. Maybe a tweed would be a good idea. Cool concept though.
poor T-Mobile, working hard getting all the touch-phones in.
but its a little too late
if they dont change game plan soon, they'll sink down like that stupid-ass AOL a few years ago or so.
now, 4G its just right around the corner.
get ready for a whole new ball game.
stupid-ass 2.348498inch touch-screen phones sells for $800000//
great news for you poor wireless internet users to be out there, check out this new kid, coming to town.. www.clear.com
Reminds me of the first Ford Taurus.
They were so ugly boxes that I'm surprised people bought them.
Then they had new new and improved Taurus and then again the new fancy looking Taurus so people had to upgrade.
It's part of a marketing conspiracy.
Just make the first model barely acceptable for desperate consumers, then improve on it so people have to upgrade or be left behind in the rat race.
