VAIO L is Sony's first touchscreen PC, starts at $1,300

Update: We just went hands-on with the VAIO L and it's got a pretty great touchscreen sensor -- quite responsive and accurate, even in multitouch gestures. Unfortunately, the TouchSmart-style software that Sony's packed in his woefully half-baked. Hopefully what we saw was just an early prototype of sorts, or Sony's got some serious work to before October 22. Overall the hardware is pretty Sony-ish and minimal, while the glossy display looks pretty brilliant. Pics below.

this sounds pretty good..
Yeah specially from Sony, would expect this to cost arm and half a leg. Depending on the spec's, i might forgive them for f-ing up with the Psp Go.
And still costs less than their new netbook.
Sony should create an OQO type device with ion and atom. I would be there waiting.
please don't have mandibles!
yeah, it gets creepier the longer you stare at it.
Dammit glenskey, now I want to see your pic but cant (i'm at work). Wanna see what the fun is about.
*que dramatic music*... dun dun duuuun!!!!
pretty nice except that all the specs are "up to", not the starting model ($1300) specs.
now if this had some good graphics card and also capable of running that 3D vision from Nvidia then this would be full win since it'll feel like you're touching the items...
Sony, i'm starting to love you.

This is false info, the first touchscreen for sony was back in 2003. with a pc that had a crazy interface whenever u touched the screen waves would be created right where u touched it, that was an amazing pc, too bad it had a huge price tag for the time. it had almost all features this one had. just no one bought it. touch screen, no one was interested back then. until know i hope this one is as good as the old one.
Eee pc had touchscreen first!
So. Martin Cooper created the phone, your point?
Is that and IQ506 or IQ526? Wait, that's the one HP released a year and a half ago. Looks like the same type of touch technology by the thick bezel around it.
Glad others are hopping in. I like my IQ506, and having Blue-ray would be good too! Although the Touchsmart software is a little twitchy. Hope this competiton (and Dell's) spurs HP to release a Touchsmart software update on, say, Oct 23?
Maybe the new iMacs will pioneer touchscreen technology when they come out. Well, maybe not pioneer, since HP, Dell, and now Sony are in it, but you know, it's never really done first until Apple does it.
Not Sony's first touch screen PC I am afraid ;)
I can remember lusting after the LX900 back in the day.

+1
Sold. I'd like a PC with HDMI next to my bed without need for keyboard and mouse.
Looks cool... Does the touch screen work with Linux?
I can see this computer being good for a home theater setup...being that there is HDMI and all. I wonder if you can use the HDMI input to record PS3 game footage?
It doesn't support capture over the inputs. They exist so that you can turn the PC off and use it as a TV.
all sony's pc's has the plug ins for game recording unless they took that off. in 03 i had a sony pc that was 2,000 bucks it had all the same things this one has, video editing and all it also was supposed to have a camcorder with it but they never gave that me. ugh.
but i used to play the xbox on it, also recorded tv. almost anything they have know, standerd on most pcs know in days. lol
OK somebody explain to me the logic of having a HDTV with a touch screen. I'm foreseeing lots of grubby finger prints on the screen.
Agree completely. For me a Touchscreen PC is a family or kitchen computer. Bonus points for style of course, and this looks very nice. But its a secondary PC which needs to not cost too much, and the Blu-Ray and tuner and all seem pointless to me for the market it targets.
Sony 24" touchscreen for only $1300? It must have Atom on it.
It can't be an Atom, as this has blu-ray and Atom and either gpu it comes with(even with ion) can't support blu-ray yet as power is not there.
But...isn't that a reasonable price? But it's a Sony....
"Hopefully what we saw was just an early prototype of sorts, or Sony's got some serious work to to before October 22."
Finished product. Work completed over a month ago. They've begun engineering the 1Q10 lineup.
yea son its aight
put some gloves on, lol.
i have a touchscreen phone it gets smugy but i deal with it anyway, hd. if i was going to watch an hd movie, i would clean it before i watch movies, pics and whatever else. like my phone i clean it everyday, witch either way it gets dirty.
computer desks are more dirty then a restroom, look it up.
anyone know what that keyboard is?
For the same price the Gateway's touch screen device has a 64gb ssd drive +1tb of space, quad core cpu and a pretty solid ATI gpu. Now since this is Sony, I take this only has a ATI gpu that is a bit lower than what the Gateway is offering, 500gb of space, a top line dual core cpu, and a touch screen that is way more responsive than the Gateway.
Seriously? Vaio L
Seriously? Vaio L (less that or equal to) Vaio X $$$?
WTF....
Does it have a video output (HDMI, DisplayPort, anything)? AFAIR some previous Sony AIOs didn't have a video output, I hope they fixed it on this model. It looks pretty sweet.
Nope.
They haven't taken care of the ergonomics.
How long can you use this thing without your arm and shoulder getting tired and sore?
I could not get the touchscreen to work in Linux; since the Touchscreen is part of the PC, linux does not the Touchscreen as an input device. I contated Sony but their answer is basically "yopu are on your own". I am sure somebody will figure it out.
Most touchscreen you have to plug it in either USB or serial; the Darn thing is built-in and does not show up as a input device. It shows up in the bbot up log file.
