Virtual Autopsy Table brings multitouch to the morgue
Ever wonder what the insides of a human being really look like but lacked the grit or credentials to watch an autopsy in the flesh? Well, whatever the reasons, we can all probably agree this is one of the best uses for a multitouch table surface ever. The Virtual Autopsy Table (developed by Norrköping Visualization Centre and the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization in Sweden) makes use of high resolution MRIs, rendered and processed into 3D images which are then accessible in the table itself. The results are super impressive and educational -- not to mention the fact that there's no actual cutting involved! The autopsy table was obviously developed with educational purposes in mind, and we wouldn't be surprised to see these cropping up in museums all over the globe any day now. Check out the truly riveting video after the break.

That look sick.
Hes dead, way past sick.
This reminds of that boost mobile commercial where the morgue guy is eating a burrito and it falls onto the dead guy. When he picks it up, you can clearly see the red blood stain on the back...but hes still eats it.
I hate that commercial. I saw it right before I was about to head to Taco Bell one night. There went my fourth meal craving :(
@dalphz hahaha!! But what in the world does that have to do with boost mobiles?
'Cuz the blood-stained burrito in the aformentioned boost commercial killed my craving for burritos. And any tacobell-esq food.
This could turn out very good, or very bad.
Just in time to creep people out for Halloween!
You could scan all the people coming to your Halloween party, and virtually dissect them in front of everyone. I wonder what Madoff's heart looks like (not that he's invited to my Halloween party), but I may just be wearing his joker face as a costume =)

Strap a couple of rocket launchers on that skeleton and he's in Doom 3.
*fapfapfap*
Really Gabe?! A necrophilia fantasy, really?! A gay necrophilia fantasy, seriously?!
How much further into the rabbit hole should humanity go, ah Gabe?
Awesome!!
Dissect your favorite porn star!
What a great image to wake up to
I'm actually about to go to sleep, quite a disturbing image to end the day.
Looks like it's time for a re-make of "Quincy".
"It was MURDER, Sam and I can PROVE IT!"

i can make someone look like that without it being virtual, there aint just lint in my pockets
"Hi, we're proud to bring you the iCauseOfDeath. Previous systems just weren't intuitive. We wanted to make a system that allows coroners and pathologists to enjoy a clean, intuitive, app-driven interface so they can enjoy what they do. But we knew it couldn;t be too pricey.
That's why we're doing it for 99.99.
And wouldn't it be great.."
Brought to you by Touch Corpses™.
"Because we know you might not need all organ apps, we've decided to sel- make them available separately at just 9.99 a piece. Or you can get the whole set for 99.99!"
On the television shows Bones and CSI: NY, they demonstrated mythical versions of this technology already :) It's awesome when fake-tech becomes the real thing.
Okay, now THAT is cool.
I can see a game, "Surgery Hero", being marketed to those with enough cash to buy said table...
I think Im going to MultiPuke..
IC
Poorly done video...unimpressive.
That eye socket is giving me the chills...
WAY too cool.
The Swedes are awesome!
Where do I download it? :oD
that's CT. Not MRI. And CSI etc did not demonstrate "mythical versions" of the technology. They just took an existing piece of technology and represented it inaccurately.
@ bg: Are you claiming the people on the video does not know what they're talking about? I think you need to fix yourself somehow. If they say MRI it's MRI. Those guys have years of waiting lists for visitors from all over the world to see their tech. Dont try to correct them. You make a fool out of yourself.
The engadget text is wrong. The video shows 3d CT reconstructions, not MRI. I'm a radiologist. Those are just the facts.
I used to work in a hospital. I was looking for a doctor and I was directed to a room. When I opened the doors he was in the middle of an autopsy. He didn't miss a beat, he stopped, looked at me and talked to me for 5 minutes. Then went back to work. It's 5 years later and I still have that vivid image in my head. It's surreal. The room feels darker and you feel cold. Sound gets muffled and it's just surreal... like a dream.
The morgue has always had multi-touch if you catch my drift. Giggity.
This image is actually from a CT scan and reconstructed using one of several 3D reconstruction software. The person is alive because the arteries show up -it can only happen if contrast were injected into a live patient. The patient has had neurosurgery (evidenced by the poptop), and some fillings which scatter the x-rays resulting in the dark lines next to the mouth. The volume rendering can bring in muscles and skin -the skin can be shaded to a lifeless beige and the hair doesn't show up -very autopsy like. The cutting into long slices -this is just showing the 3D data that shows up on the plane. We use this everyday in our practice and in the hospital. In fact, the software was programmed by people who left the gaming industry.
iKurt X: Yes it would. This has been in development for years and years.
