AT&T's HTC Tilt 2 coming October 18? (updated)

Update: We were just sent an internal AT&T memo that says the Tilt 2 is actually being stocked and sold to business customers as of today, but that it won't go widely on sale until the 18th. So, our question stands, with an addendum -- anyone planning on pretending to a businessperson today in order to grab one?

I'd rather get the clap than keep my contract with AT&T going any longer than necessary so no I'm not planning on grabbing one.
No kidding. I locked my stupid a$$ with AT&T for two years over a fu*king Propel. Not that the Propel is a bad phone or anything, but AT&T is dry of cool phones unless you get the Jesus Phone, which I didn't want.
I just wont do it because its a win mobile phone and yeah, I live in Canada where we probably wont even see this handset.
Haha youre funny.... Definately though Android is FTW and the Sholes is looking real good, we need a snapdragon based android phone but not on ATT. Verizon would be fine but not gimped.
I really have never understood all the AT&T hate. All carriers are "regional" to some extent. I get better service with AT&T than any of my friends do with other carriers. Of course, that is to be expected in the south east...
ATT is a good network here in the midwest, other parts cannot say. I really think ATT just needs to invest more money into their network and build it up to handle all this Facebook and myspace smartphone data. Verizon is really the only one who spends endlessly or atleast makes you think that they really care about their network. For me its really about the phones I go wherever the good phones are.
For me at least, the hate comes from the fact that even with 5 bars of service in Washington DC, I sometimes cannot make a phone call. The fact that sometimes it takes hours to receive a text (from one iPhone to another, both on AT&T). The fact that even with 5 bars of service in Washington DC, my calls still drop for no reason (again, this is with two AT&T phones both in good coverage areas).
Maybe it's the fact that right now I'm in Silicon Valley, the heart of technology in the US, and I cannot get a good signal on most of my college campus unless I stand in the wide open (while people with Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile have great coverage even indoors). And even then, half the time my calls decide to drop or the call quality is awful (this is often during conversation with my girlfriend, who has 4 or 5 bars of AT&T service at her house). The fact that AT&T's 3G network is tiny compared to Verizon's.
I think to top it all off it's the fact that despite paying as much money as I did on Verizon, AT&T's service is worse than Verizon's and even worse than (at least in the areas I go to) Sprint's (which is much cheaper than AT&T too). Honestly, if it didn't mean paying $150 I'd cancel my contract right now and go to either Verizon or Sprint. The iPhone is good but it's not too useful when the phone function doesn't work half the time.
You got that right. Switching to Sprint getting a cheaper plan and the HTC HERO when it releases, and I am going to break contract and sell my shitty Iphone 3g to do it.
@ Mannco
We already have the Tilt 2, we call it the Touch Pro2 U_U
I'm planning on it if it's official that the LEO won't make it to US on ATT GSM bands.
I'm going to wait about 3 months after the release so the price drops.
Who cares the goddamn phone is obsolete already. HTC Leo is where I wanna be :D
YES!!!! been waiting months and months, even contemplating leaving at&t just to get one. my hermes has been on its last limb for months now.
hermes still works? wow
i had the white screen off and on for about 2 months before i could get the fuze it was hell
I will be buying one the day of release. I have AT&T and I love the coverage in my area for its 3G. I have been waiting for the touch pro2 for a very long time. Glad to see it coming out finally. As a side note, the movement of the numbers keys doesn't bother me.
I down ranked you just for saying you love AT&T's 3G coverage
Yeah, planning on getting one. If certain other things don't get confirmed for AT&T in the coming weeks...I'll probably be waiting for a price drop as well though...
not without a headphone jack
*DING* *DING* *DING*
We have a winner! That was a deal breaker for me too.
HTC HD2.... Done.
I'm not going to risk not getting the subsidy for the HD2, much less if I need to switch carriers to get it.

Check!
I was thinking about getting either the Pure or Tilt 2. But that was before I heard the HTC HD2 (Leo) was coming to the states early next year. I'm a patient guy so I'll hold on to my Fuze until then.
My AT&T Store ordered me one yesterday and will have them in stock today... Whats this about the 18th?
not without Gorilla Glass
Nope.
HTC HD2 (Leo) all the way.
Lets just hope they worked some of the kinks out from the original Tilt. The first on was a piece of garbage that froze 90% of the time and had the speed of a yak up a mountain.
I kept the stock ROM on my Tilt for all of about a day before I discovered XDA-Developers. It's still running strong on probably the 4th ROM 2 years later, but it's going to be retired once the Hero is released.
My tilt is a pos. I'm on the third replacement this year. Stock rom, cooked rom, doesn't matter, just reboots randomly. Shules can't get here fast enough.
I can't tell the difference between all these HTC phones, they all look the same, all do same things, Magic, Hero, TouchPro.....................
That's because they are the same with minor differences.
Example, the Fuze and Touch Pro are essentially the same phones with different keyboards and slightly different bodies.
Well, to clarify, they have "families" of phones, the TP and Fuze are in the same family. Just like the Tilt 2 and the TP2 are in the same family.
and the TP2 is essentially the same thing as the Fuze. Only real differences are the larger screen, the screen tilts, and it's running 6.5. Same proc, same RAM size.
The difference is software and hardware.
For example: virtual vs physical keyboard;
android vs WinMo
800mhz vs 582 mhz
3.5 mm jack vs usb jack only
screen size
ram, internal capacity... etc...
Do some Google boy !
@ Kaosu:
A HUGE difference you left out is TouchFlo has been extended to cover virtually all of WinMo 6.5. In other words, they reskinned the entire OS and that makes a big difference in ease-of-use.
Still though, I want the TouchHD2. If AT&T isn't getting that, I'm leaving them. Period.
BGR said they start selling them today?
Heck no. Just got my Fuze a year ago and have no desire to make a lateral move to WinMo 6.5. I'll be waiting until the WinMo 7 phones come out and see what things look like then, including whether or not I'll even stay with AT&T.
i already have a Fuze. as much as i like the TP2 there's no point in switching because (aside from 6.5, a larger screen, and the tilt), it's the same piece of hardware as the Fuze. i'll be waiting for the HD2 since that's an actual hardware upgrade.
Not to mention your Fuze can easily be flashed to 6.5 in about 4 minutes, so I'd say don't bother with the Tilt and go to XDA and find a 6.5 flash you like instead. I did that with my Sprint Touch Pro, never looked back. Well.. I did get addicted to flashing and editing ROMs, so I guess it's not all gravy.
I Been waiting a year and a day for this phone it seems... I'll be getting mine on the release date!!!
not with the HD2 coming in out early next year!!!!!
Ha Ha, Engadget. That's funny. No one actually goes with AT&T out of pure choice. Only for the iPhone. No iPhone, then you opt for actual service, which means CDMA!
I hear AT&T's coverage is good in the South. Unfortunately I live in either the metro DC area (where service ranges from good to shitty) or in Silicon Valley (college, and service is shit at my campus).
Do you realize that out of 80Million customers only 10million are iphone users, so that means that 70million people have at&t and don't use an iphone. Even before the iphone at&t's churn rate has always been lower than sprint/t-mobile so they must be doing something right.
AT&T is great here in the south. Much faster than all the other carriers and more coverage than T-Mobile and Sprint. Even if I didn't have the iPhone, I'd still be with AT&T.
MEH... windozes
Not unless my company pays for it! I'd rather go with Verizon's version since it's the same phone only with a 3.5mm headphone jack--I'm tired of forgetting to carry the adapter for my Tilt. But, even more importantly, I'm waiting on the HTC HD2 to hit the states...no matter what carrier it comes on, even T-Mobile (gag!), I'll be the first in line for that sweet little piece.
According to HTC's website, if you click on "provider" ATT, the specs for the Tilt 2 it does come with the audio jack.

My tilt has an audio jack, so did my 8525. That doesn't mean its 3.5mm. The Pure comes with a dongle that has 3.5mm jack, maybe the TILT 2 will too....still a HTC FAIL.
I guess I figured since in the pure specs, it specifically calls out the usb dongle, and the tilt2 doesn't, but calls out the audio jack... I plan on going to check it out tonight..I've been waiting for thie phone to upgrade my existing verizon 8700 to att. (att has better coverage in my area vs. verizon)
Don't hate on AT&T too much. They have the fastest/most advanced technology. Coverage is great here in New Haven, CT, and in most places in NYC, where I'm from.
I know VZ has better coverage, but they don't have SIM cards! Try taking most of their hardware abroad/on vacation/on business trips. Also, I bought one of Sprint's CDMA modems on eBay for a part inside it, but I realized that whoever had it before hadn't released the ESN from their account, cancelled the service, and so now the device is as good as a paperweight! On AT&T and even a bunch of the CDMA carriers in Africa, the units have SIM cards! The phone/device should be mine when I buy it, and that's not possible without the SIM card setup.
Also, I've noticed that with AT&T's 3G 850 MHz rollout, coverage is getting substantially better. A good test for me this summer was the section of the northeast corridor between New York and New Haven. With either of my data cards, coverage on AT&T would drop out 5 or 6 times in 2 hours back in May, but by August it would only drop once in 2 hours. This isn't the best test in the world, but things are getting better to make AT&T a viable competitor with VZ.
We'll see real change when LTE comes out.
@ Barrett,
VZW does have SIM cards, it's just that most of their phone don't. I
have an HTC Touch Pro2, and it comes with a SIM Card. I verified that
it actually does work internationally as well.
That looks exactly like the Touch Pro2...
Because its a Touch Pro 2.
With the Leo only a few months away? Are you serious?
I'm over her in S.F., you know AT&T Park? I can't get AT&T signals at either home or at work. My Tilt had it's GPS crap out so I had it replaced, along with the battery that wouldn't hold a charge for more than a day. Last night my new Tilt (9 months old) was plugged in, overheated, so I unplugged it, and it lost all of its juice within 30 minutes. No more AT&T phones, no more HTC Phones. Oh, my wifes Iphone works fine everywhere, but I'm an IT guy, not an Apple Fanboy.
why would anyone get this when HTC HD2 is on the way
I'm not getting it, but your answer:
There's always something on the way
why.. when ... is on the way.
I used to think that way..(nothing wrong with it really) but I got to feeling like if I always waited for the next thing coming...I'd never buy anything and have tons of money..oh..hey...now there's a thought. :)
My wife wants one of these, but the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack and the fact that Microcells haven't made it into the dead zone we inhabit might convince her otherwise. I'd love a Leo, personally.
It's available alright -- I can buy it now from my AT&T account. On one of my lines in shows the upgrade price to HTC Tilt 2 for $879.99. On the other -- $499.99. Either one is insane, but I guess insanity has gradations too.
SMT 5600, Cingular 8125, 8525, 8925 (tilt), Fuze (aka Touch Pro) and now Tilt 2 (aka TP2)... ive had them all ;)
Man, $830 for NEW service through premier on a two-year contract. And the same price as an upgrade for my line that is eligible for an upgrade. Are they completely INSANE???
wow my no-commitment price is 499.99 hmmmmm
Its available right now if you go through you upgrade options mine says 349.00 not worth it at all especially just a chance of the HD2 coming in Q1 possibly to att though i doubt it.
Copy/paste from the "Features" column of the description of the phone on the business site. Price on contract is $299.99.
In particular, note the "HTC ExtUSB(TM ) -- 11 pin mini USB 2.0, audio jack, and TV Out in one (HTC TV Out cable sold separately)"; that means no 3.5mm jack. Also interesting, the PTT:

I'll be waiting for it to be "officially" made available, whether I decide to get it or not. On the fence, really because of the HD2 - I'd rather have it than the tilt2, to be honest. So I may just wait and see what the deal is by March or whatever.
Well I called to see about upgrading and it was available but they wanted $380 with a new 2-year agreement...
I have never paid more than $199 for each of my HTC upgrade... 8525 ---> 8925 ---> ???
Who knows...
My mistake its $299 with $50 Mail In Rebate
I and seeing $879 on my premier site and I am eligible for an upgrade also...
This is CRAZY!!..
I might as well get an Iphone since it is my contract is up...
It's showing up for me on Premier with a $349.99 upgrade price. That's at least $150 too much. I've wanted this phone since it was first shown earlier in the year, but now I think I should just wait for the Leo or equivalent Snapdragon/WM 6.5 device with US 3G.
Wait, you all can buy it online? I don't see it on the website for sale yet. Where can I get it?
Just go to att.com enter your phone number and password and click on check upgrade options
i would like to have it but not with att
I'm one of those business customers, so I should have about 3 by tomorrow, but less for calling and more for programming
will the price for the tilt 2 drop by Christmas?
