We have it on good authority that T-Mobile and AT&T both currently plan on announcing the Bold 2 -- also known as the
Onyx -- on October 21. As a refresher, this would be the touchpad-driven piece with model number 9700 that's been making the rounds on the leak circuit the past few months, a fitting successor to a device that virtually every celebrity this side of Merle Haggard has been photographed carrying at once point or another. What we don't know is pricing or retail launch date, but at least this gives us a pretty hard target for when we can expect details -- so start cleaning out that Bold trackball, because you're going to have something to eBay here pretty shortly.
[Thanks, Cody]
I wish the Tour's trackball didn't suck
This has it all except,
5G
CDMA
Wireless HDMI
Touchscreen
oops meant to put that above comment for another post...
BTW What Tour do you have? The trackball works great on all the Tours made in the last couple months. Verizon/Sprint will fix it for you.
Trackball UI is ancient and awkward for a modern smartphone.
Using trackball with Map app or browser is extremely awkward,
if not painful. Hard to believe people still use trackball and
stylus these days!
On the contrary, fingers are too fat for link-heavy pages, so the trackball on my G1 is excellent for accurately selecting the link on a webpage.

I guess you haven't use iPhone. You don't have to press the whole
finger, just a tip of your finger is all needed to operate iPhone. Try
it and you'll never go back to trackball!!!
^^^Just the Tip haha
@clexman, I bought my Tour about 3 days before launch from my sprint store.. I guess I should go have them replace it but I'm afraid it will have the same trackball problem
Sprint/Verizon acknowledged the trackball problem and are willing to repair/replace those who have a Tour that has a faulty trackball. Ultimately, you will get a Tour with a working trackball.
i generally like to keep up w/ technology and especially smartphones. but i've completely given up w/ the blackberry brand. w/ all the phones they have coming out year round, which for the most part all look identical, being able to track the differences it becoming too much of a pain in the ass.
you'll look real important with a phone like that
How can you not love pleather?
the after-market real leather battery covers will probably look a lot sexier... i would like to see a crocodile leather one in person
nice! I wish the BB would just have a larger screen. Overall a great phone to have.
the cool thing about the screen.. atleast on the Tour (not sure about this one) is that it has the same resolution as the BB Storm.. so it's a fairly high res screen for it's size like 480x320 or somethin
Scamberry. Biggest bloody scam on the face of the earth. Reinvent the farking wheel and pretend like they are great innovators. Such limited phones with crappy UIs designed for morons to use which frustrated any remotely technologically savvy user. Theres nothing a Scamberry can do that a cheap Symbian smartphone like even a 5500 Sport can't do. "Scamberry Internet Service" it seems. Another bloody obvious scam is they pretend as if only their proprietary proxy servers can provide internet browsing which in reality goes though an ORDINARY GPRS connection. When this scam became too apparent to hide they silently enabled GPRS access for 3rd party J2ME applications.
That's a BOLD move but I think the T-moblie consumers are more about landscape texting phones lol.
I read some where online that a T-Mobile sales rep confirmed that they will start selling the Bold 2 on the 17th of this month. If this is true, "Good Bye!" iPhone 2G, and "Hello!" little blinking notifications light.
I am doing the same...
If you'd ditch an iPhone for this, I feel sorry for you. BlackBerry OS hasn't evolved worth a damn.
BB OS haven't evolve because they got other major things done correctly. Does the newer iPhone still plagued by the crappy low speaker and ear-piece? Does it takes 2-3 firmwares upgrades just to do Cut, Copy, and Paste? People with the 2G and 3G are still stuck with the lags in between apps on the iPhone. The only upside with the iPhone is the apps store and the web browser. I'm sure the average BB users are mostly sitting in front of the computer throughout the day and uses the internet occasionally.
@trinh.chau,
But but but, those are things of past.
And it already does more than copy and paste.
When will it be available for purchase though?
Will this come with UMA capability?
t-mob's will have UMA
At first, everyone was talking about the Driftwood (T-Mob variant) having UMA, but lately the rumor has been that they'll pick up they Onyx as the handoff between UMA and 3G is less than stellar. This actually makes sense seeing as how T-Mo doesn't seem to sell any 3G / UMA phones
What is the market for blackberr(ie?)ys?
Boring businessmen?
Have you ever used a blackberry? Unlike iPhone it actually keeps the apps running...
Most of the people I know have either a blackberry or an iPhone.
RIM have a great market. It's for people who just need reliable email connections and likes to run other apps at the same time. Someone that may carry a laptop everywhere they go. For myself as a college student, I had the Bold when it first came out. Great phone and loves the notification blinking light and awesome speakers. Then I reduced my cellphone budget and went to T-Mobile. Great service if you live in the city and doesn't care about 3G. Was given a 2G iPhone and it was great for the first few months. Afterward, I find that it's distracting, definitely during classes to browse the internet... and its great when you want to browse the net while waiting for someone. Other than that, it's just a basic phone that I have to recharge every night or else suffers the next day.
I use the iPhone to record lectures and just irritated how I can't use multiple apps at the same time. I know there are jailbreak apps out there but when using it, there were 40-60% chances that the recording will not work. With the Bold, I can record, be on aim, email and/or internet knowing that my recording will be fine. Now hearing about the Bold 2 coming out for T-Mobile, I can be happy to stay in my budget with a phone that I can appreciate. Now the question is, will it work with T-Zone :)
"Unlike iPhone it actually keeps the apps running... "
Also it will likely run 3 days normal usage before a recharge.
iPhone appstore? Has it going? Compared to free apps on Palm/Android and 90% of iPhone appstore apps being Family Guy aif quotes, I think BB users have nothing to worry about. GPS, WiFi, Google, Yelp, 3MP camera+flash, long bettry life and GeoLocated services is all you need. Otherwise, bring your laptop and tether...you'll have a better experience than trying to do it all on a 3G S.
actually, I was referring to other WM devices with slide out keyboards..
Is there a version of this phone coming out in CDMA (VZW)? I have the tour, but I hate the trackball on it and this new little optical touchpad looks like that might solve the problem. The wi-fi is cool too, but dont really care cause the broswer on these all suck anyways.
What the hell is the difference with all these blackberries?!? They all look the same and have the same crap browser!
No.
And what non touchscreen phone has a better browser? Bolt Browser 1.5 is pretty sweet to me.
Blackberry:
Curve 8310 GPS but NO WIFI
Curve 8320 wifi but NO GPS
Curve 8900 wifi gps good camera but NO 3G
Tour 9630 3g gps good camera but NO WIFI
Curve 8520 wifi gps but NO 3G
Bold 9000 wifi 3g gps but Bulky with crappy camera NO AutoFocus
I think the 9000 looks MUCH better, every time i see one, BB hater I am, i immediately think of 'premium device'. and stock out of the box, the web browser is pretty powerful. a classmate was using a reasonably rich site on hers when i had to help her out with something. would a Hero, iPhone, etc, have displayed it better? only by virtue of their larger screens.
the hardware is awesome the software sitll bores me... I don't see the difference between this and a Blackberry from 3 years ago. Though I also see no difference between iPhone 3GS and iPhone from 2007..... sooooo my advice? Go WebOS or Android :)
Any word when this is coming to canada?
will there be anything missing on onxy?
Blackberry tend miss key features:
Curve 8310 GPS but NO WIFI
Curve 8320 wifi but NO GPS
Curve 8900 wifi gps good camera but NO 3G
Tour 9630 3g gps good camera but NO WIFI
Curve 8520 wifi gps but NO 3G
Bold 9000 wifi 3g gps but Bulky with crappy camera NO AutoFocus
Onyx has 3G, GPS, WiFi, 3.2mp Camera + AF and Flash, Thinner/smaller than the bold, faster processor, more ram, better screen, though smaller screen than bold (same size as the 8900)
in other words, best blackberry ever?
No, see the article just above this one ;)
They can make it with higher MP for camera like 5MP...Better picture quality..
Also..
Stuff like Touchscreen and qwerty keyboard.togather.
Nah, I won't be ebaying my Bold 9000, as nice as the Bold 9700 is. I'll wait for the Dakota model with touchscreen + physical qwerty that's coming next year.
Would have got this if the N900 didn't come out. N900 to much of a badass device to go back to BB's.
im gonna replace my iphone 3g with this? from people that have used both, would you suggest this? blackberry has bbm which like everyone has and it seams so much better than texting. the only apps i care about really are facebook twitter and a few games haha
Who's gonna be stupid enough to ebay their Bold now for this phone which is nothing more than a mix of the Tour and Curve 8900? It's the same size as the curve 8900, with the same camera, memory, screen as the curve 8900 and the exact keyboard of the tour. Not to mention there is only one speaker which sounds quieter than the the Bold, Tour or Curve 8900.
The only benefit here is the trackpad.
Any real Bold owner would be smart enough to hold onto their device until at least the Essex or Dakota which will feature a newer camera, and the Dakota will have a new touchscreen for ancillary features such as flick scrolling.
The only benefits this has over the Bold is 256 mb memory as opposed to 128 mb. But the Onyx drops the 1 gb onboard memory. And the camera is the same 3.2 mp camera that the storm introduced while the Bold has a 2,0 mp camera.
Anybody that has at least the Tour, curve 8900, Bold, iPhone 3G or 3GS would benefit to wait until mid 2010 when the REAL next-gen of Blackberry devices is released with full flash browsers etc...
While iPhone is good... check your facts, Symbian is still the highest selling OS on the planet.
According to analysts the breakdown of smartphone sales worldwide at the end of June was:
Nokia(Symbian) 45%
RIM(BlackBerry OS) 18.7%
Apple(iPhone OS) 13.3%
HTC(WM&Android) 6%
All others 16.9%
Clearly both RIM and Apple still have a lot of room to grow before they can claim "best selling smartphone on the planet"
If you're too lazy to check out eBay, you could always just straight sell your item to BuyMyTronics.com! It's all the cash without any of the hassle!... And eBay fees.
Why? This thing is ugly! The original Bold's design was the best. Now I don't like the design of any BlackBerry.
Bold 9000 = sexy. Bold 9700 = sexier.
YES!!!!
When will it be announced in UK??? Cant wait to buy one!!!
Yeah, I agree with the post above, there are a lot of phones at e bay that are very latest and cheap.. my boss bough an Iphone there for a very low cost.
