GPS, Garmin's connected nuvi 1690 now shipping for $500
Guess what, kiddos? Garmin's minty fresh connected PND is now shipping, and if you plan on getting your home address on one of those labels, you best break out the checkbook. The nüvi 1690 is now moving out from Amazon's warehouses, and just as promised, it's going for a penny under $500. Is real-time access to Google search, white page listings, real-time traffic and flight status updates on your GPS unit really worth all that cheddar? Maybe -- but just wait until those two years of free service expire. Good times.

good god, you can buy a small laptop for that much money
DIE GARMIN
DIE TOMTOM
YOU'RE ALL GONNA DIE
... I love you Google Maps for Android and iPhone (and I guess Blackberry)
Chief.
CHIEF
swing and a miss
my iPhone can do the same, I have no use for this.
GreasyGirl.....
Wrong !!! You cannot do the same.
sorry....... now go clean up.
@ss go away.... Loser
You are right. Im looking for a new Garmin and thats the first thing i thought of. That my iphone does the same thing just better.
Yup a lot of apple haters out there. They just dont know what they are missing and will rank you down because of spite. Im a PC and MAC guy and enjoy both worlds. I just know when i like good products and the iphone is near perfect (after jailbreak) IMHO
"Yup a lot of apple haters out there" ????????????????
WTF has that got to do with this article ???????????
In case you forgot, the title of this post is : Garmin's connected nuvi 1690 now shipping for $500
What in that title relates to Apple ?? Are you kiddies that ignorant ??
This is the greatest invention ever. This internet. In two years, it will be time to upgrade anyway :)
Your Iphone can't do the same. If you lose 3G you lose your maps chief. I think thats a major thing these all-in-one device nuts are missing. PND's have the mapping data loaded in them, that thing would show you where your at in Antarctica, if you so choose. Of course most Apple fanboys won't go anywhere where people can't see them using their Iphone.
The TomTom app stores their maps on the iPhone and you would probably have to buy a map pack if you wanted to use this device outside of the USA
No, when there is no 3G coverage, we just use the Edge network. The maps load slower, but it's saved me a couple hundred bucks on a separate GPS device.
Not trying to say that an iPhone is better than this GPS device or any dedicated GPS navigation device, but try to explain that an iPhone is a pretty good GPS device substitute for me and a lotta people out there.
@ mcflycat
No not all apps depend on data connection for Maps Chief. LOL at the apple fan boy comment. Man its obvious you haven't owned an iphone. If you did you would understand how LIFE CHANGING the iphone really is. DUMB@SS
LOL haters
The Navigation Apps do chief. LOL, I owned an Iphone, switched to Pre.

Gmap by Xroad Cheif
the PALM PRE! That just says it all..... Its an ok phone. Everyone that has had the pre and an iphone say that the iphone wins hands down! but im sure its personal Pref. CHIEF :)
ATT is a total rip off. I was losing 3G constantly, Sprint is AWESOME and half the cost. Plus auto spell was annoying the crap out of me, needed that real keyboard.
I looked at the pre, was not a bad phone, pics are better in oPhone would love a better camera.
I just dont like the plastic the Pre is made of.......
What about them exploding batteries of Apples? I'll take plastic of shards of metal in my dome.
How about those crappy apps and the crappy look??
Guess you will take that too.
Apple can make all the farting, blimp driving, crappy video game apps they want, doesn't make that giant brick of a phone attractive.
learn to spell and auto spell will not be a problem.
I stand corrected, but wait! Does that say that you can only load regions because of the Iphone's memory? Well I'll be darned, an all-in-one device with limits!? no way chief! Looks like a great app, just don't drive very far, better use this app for bicycling or walking probably not best to use for driving, CHIEF!
Oh, I stand corrected, chief. but, wait, only regions of the U.S.? bummmmmer, to bad, whatever you do, don't drive very far Chief!
@ Mcflycat
Wow, every device has limits. 32 Gb is a lot of data. my guess is that the iphone has more memory than the stand alone NAV's. The fact that you try to SPIN it around to claim that the iphone has limits is just childish and has no meaning. EVERY DEVICE HAS LIMITS. What a wast of time you really are a DUMB@SS. Just an apple hater with no life. And yes do stand corrected.
geez, so rude, childish? whos doing the name calling, my god... but anyway, back to the article at hand... The Nuvi 1690 has all of North America pre-loaded on it, and I imagine free space available, not to mention and expandable sd card slot taking away any storage limits, (does the Iphone have one of those? no. thus its more limited then the above device. Lets try and keep this civil Joe Wilson.
For fucks sake.
Can I get a plug-in for Firefox that automatically removes/hides ANY ENGADGET COMMENT with the following words: Apple, iPod, iTouch, iPhone, 3GS
I'd pay for something like that!
Your right, my bad.
.
O.K. Does this mean that Navteq and Google will simultaneity provide a satellite signal to ensure all p.o.i.'s are up to date? Driving into lakes aren't as fun as it used to be. Google i.m.o seems to reign concerning satellite feeds.
It means they'll both provide P.O.I. information. The Satellites are run by the U.S. Dept. of Defense.
$500 for shipping sounds like too much.
NuLink is $5 a month, not nearly as pricey as the last sentence of the story implies. However five hundred dollars for any window mounted GPS is silly now.
part of the $500, is the 2-years of connected access to traffic and other updated information.
and the 2 year contract isn't worth a dime! why not just give us a usb port that can pick up an IP address... then I can link my bberry in modem mode and voila - no 2 year contract needed, no need for the extra cell hardware on my gps
this thing is a waste
