Why? You make me sad. :'(
I really thought Apple would "fix" the Pre sync issue lol
Oh don't worry that's on their list of things to "fix"...
With an iPhone firmware update?
Fix it like you get a dog fixed :\
Hooking an iPod Touch or iPhone with OS 3.1.2 to a Windows machine will infect it with a virus designed to brick any subsequently connected Palm Pre devices.
No software update will ever fix AT&T's network issues...
A good fix for their network would be to buy Verizon. I've lived the AT&T nightmare for far too long.
And yet I never had ATT network issues......
Yeah, I'm in the middle of Massachusetts and I get 3G most of the time.
You folks who don't get 3G should join the folks who don't think the PS3 has games. And you could all commiserate together. What a fun time that would be.
If you don't like AT&T get it on another network. You can choose Orange, Vodafone, Telstra, China Mobile, Telefonica, Rogers and O2 to name just a few.
@xcrunk: Same here. I am in the middle of the central valley where it is nothing but agriculture and I always have a 3G unless I am literally in the middle of a farm ten miles from town.
Yeah, pssh. You bought an Apple product. If you don't like the only carrier Apple has blessed in /your/ area, the obvious choice is to move overseas.
I don't understand why people who live in places that AT&T sucks would buy an iPhone. I have one and am very happy with it. But I only purchased it because I was with AT&T already and they are strong in my area. Verizon rocks here too, so I would have gone with iPhone if it was Verizon. Sprint or T-Mobile, no way.
@Joanna D
So your advice is to move to a different country if AT&T doesn't work for you?
Sarcasm, billg, I know the internet is new for you but try to keep up
@ Cro...ow: You mean places like New York City? AT&T has problems putting up a high enough density of 3G towers in heavy traffic areas. Some places it works fine, but in others -- where most people live, for instance -- there are intermittent or persistent problems.
nyc's network blows, it was perfectly fine when i got the phone 2 years ago, now its miserable. i will have full service, all bars, 3g, and nothing will work, no internet, no sms, and every call fails until i restart the phone (where it works once and breaks again) or switch permanently to edge
What is the download size this time?
306.2 MB
I am getting a 247MB download? Dear god APPLE...
Urrr while I understand the approach... it does away with the need to apply the series of patches if u need to format back to vanilla cause every update is the whole thing.
I wish there was another way though (beside the ol' update through the series of incramemtal patches). Though i suppose injected code patches into the main install file is just ripe for the hacking n worse
sigh....
Hunh, I've been troubleshooting my TMob data networking on my unlocked iPhone all day, can't get the data service working. Wonder if there's any chance they futzed with it due to this release...?
Anyone else with an unlocked phone having trouble?
T-Mobile started cutting off data service to iPhones a while ago, TUAW broke that story. I'm surprised you still had it working up until now.
U forgot to mention another fix: pissing off the entire jailbreak community
Seriously! They haven't even gotten redsn0w out for Windows, and Apple pushes out another update! Guess I'll stick with 3.0 for now...
update now!

hate mail in 3... 2...
i bet you all the fanboys are going to come over here like N900 to bash on apple because of these issues. problem is N900 does not get his facts straight
I never made that connection that my random network loss was due to bugs... it probably happened three or four times. At least it's fixed now so it will "just work" once again.
Good to see the Network issue is fixed... My phone has required a restart each morning before I am able to send and receive any sort of TEXT or Phone message.
Hopefully 3.1.2 is more stable...
me too! and sometimes i don't even know when it's off the network since it shows that i have 5 bars/3g connected!
Surprised by a new update today, wow. Nice.
I admit, restarting my phone in areas where there's weak service helps me get re-connected. Hopefully this update helps with that.
HAHAHAHAHA, why is the phone called the best phone of all time?
I love it when I get a voice mail 3 days after it was put in my voice mailbox.
There's also a carrier update immediately after the upgrade... I wonder what that's about?
Perhaps that was the MMS update? I got that some time last week.
No, I got that last week as well. Although, maybe it has to be updated after each OS upgrade...
"iPhone OS 3.1's Greatest Bug Hits"
...which, BTW, is now available on iTunes for $9.99.
AT&T guy told me that network issues were because iPhone had a worse range than normal phones. Wonder if this is true, but you never hear too many people complaining about their blackjack 2 or HTC dropping calls like hell.
I went through several phones and all had call drop issues.
Moto v180
Moto v155
LG CU720
Sony w810i
Sony w350a
It isn't the phones, its the network in the area I live in.
My iPhone 3G sucks abysmally (technical term) at my place in Florida. It would be easy--and would seem logical--to blame it on the phone. But the phone pegs 4 or 5 bars at my home in kentucky--a 90-year-old house with block-on-block construction that you'd think would be hard to penetrate. So my problems in florida are clearly not the phone's fault, it's ATT's system.
This is anecdotal of course so doesn't disprove the allegation that the phone has limited range. It merely suggests there are other possibilities, too.
If "it just works", then why does it need so many updates that simply fix problems in the last one?
Because these kinds of things are made by human beings. STFU.
The real question is - does it fix the battery life being drained ultra fast issue that came up in 3.1.1?
My friend has been complaining of battery issues a lot after the last update. He doesn't think the battery is actually getting drained, but instead the phone is just not displaying the battery life correctly. A restart always resets it, but he shouldn't have to do that.
I want to know the same thing. I barely get 9 or 10 hours of battery life out of my phone and I don't use it much during the day.
Hopefully. An issue with hitting the tower correctly would explain why the battery runs low trying to hit the tower ...
My battery life has been awful since 3.1. I even swapped the battery thinking that may have been the issue, and the new one (which theoretically has 1/2 again more juice) still doesn't last 24 hours on a full charge.
I think you should point out that those are just fake bugs. They're not really there, nor will they ever be in any Apple product, but Apple is just testing updates. Because they're awesome like that.
Palm Pre will not be affected, right?
is there an iPod fix?
yes
ipod touch 3.1.2 really mitigates podcast scrolling issues and general lag when opening music applications.
There is still some hesitation in scrolling podcast lists, and the music player still takes longer than it used to, but both are a lot better in 3.1.2 than 3.1.1
july 2007 and theres still this many bugs and problems with a phone
That's because everytime new features are added in the firmware, new bugs unknowingly (or knowingly) get introduced. Which need to be fixed in future releases.
So when iphone OS 4.0 becomes available, expect even more bug fixes
Same happens to every software out there
This phone runs better than any HTC, Treo, or BB I've ever owned. My last phone was an E71 and no wonder you guys love the removable battery! You need to take the damn thing out to unfreeze the phone!
Oh, and by the way, check out the JD Power Assoc. ratings that came out today. ;-)
With that argument, WinMo 1.0 should have never been improved and we should all be using it because it was touched by GOD!
My biggest issue is everytime i connect my car charger to it it says accessory not for iphone and asks to turn on airplane mode, which i say no, then have to unplug and plug in the headphone jack to get music, but yet it still chargers, and has w/o issue for the past 15 months untill i updated to 3.1, not to mention all the app crashes, but it could just be a pawnage issue.
Wrong site, dude...you meant to go to TMZ.com
I'm still on 3.0.1 enjoying my unsigned IPCC and tethering.
I am immensely jealous. Hopefully geohot will deliver a jailbreak later today so I can at least use PDAnet
I'm still waiting to buy a pocket computer for myself, I really don't want to get pulled into all this kind of garbage.
@ Aaron Brown,
I also prefer PDAnet myself since it offers wifi tethering and an option to use usb.
my lappy doesn't have BT so its nice not to be limited to using the usb cable
i just saw the update and i just did the 3.1 jailbreak the other day :(
So did they fix the "no-tethering-with-facory-unlocked-iPhone" network issue?
Just updated my iPod Touch 2g.
Videos on Youtube are buffering faster and playing more smoothly than ever. I don't notice much else different with the update except that it seems to boot a little fast too (maybe it's just me).
i thing engadjet serves crash with the latest post vista boot = w7 , i cant do simple coment.
problem fixed in the iphone. thanks apple
i think engadjet serves crash with the latest post vista boot = w7 , i cant do simple coment.
problem fixed in the iphone. thanks apple
I've had the lost cellular network issue, so I'll be glad to install this update when I get home tonight. It didn't happen a lot, but of course it was a nuisance when it did. Or at least I think that's the issue I'd noticed - on one or two occasions I was in an area where I always got a signal, and I'd have no signal at all. Not voice nor data. After a reboot it would be fine again.
Funny thing, I was just in an apple store complaining about random silent (no indication of low signal strength) network dropouts, and the "genius" assured me that it was completely AT&T's fault. and now apple's fixed it with an OS update?
You see what depression from lack of support can do to a phone! I told the iPhone to stay away from sleep and recreational drugs, but no that was his way to deal with his problems. Finally he is getting rehab..... Geez!
I wish they would fix the syncing issues that have been affecting a lot of people (including me) when attempting to sync smart playlists. It's been around for a while now without any fix.
Apple has alot of catching up to do to compete with android, although they were out first. create a better user experience for power users instead of a dummied down interface and get flash and get out of att.
I really don't think the iphone is targeted toward Power users.
its really more of a mass market device.
the power users interested in the iphone are going to jailbreak anyway and customize the OS as they see fit so it doesn't make much sense for Apple to try to capture a relatively limited audience when average joes are still buying iphones by the truckload.
but that's just my opinion.
My 3.0.1 is still running just fine with my jailbreak and unofficial carrier settings. Thank you very much.
What happened to 3.1.1?
I think 3.1.1 was released specifically for the iPod Touch not too long ago.
I've had complete lack of wifi since 3.1 hopefully this fix that. downloading now
anyone else had wifi issues?
Im still on 3.0... best decision so far !
How about MMS for 2G!!!
Upgraded from OS 2.2 Quickpwned Jailbreak with YellowSn0w (unlocked) straight to OS 3.0.1 RedSn0wed Jailbreak with UltraSnOw (unlocked) and never looked back.
I have the same wifi issues, we can only hope they fix it.
Just finished the upgrade to 3.1.2 and was asked if I would like a carrier update as well...
Now the Carrier is AT&T 5.6
Just checked network settings and the option for Internet Tethering is available. I'm about to test to see if its functional.
Oh man! I need to know! I won't upgrade because I use tethering A LOT!
I got the same message to upgrade the carrier file, but I don't have the option for internet tethering, something I've missed dearly since the public upgrade to AT&T carrier file 5.5 to support MMS.
Did tethering work for you Eric, or anyone else out there?
I am still on 3.0 because of tethering. I upgraded few weeks ago to 3.1 and tethering wanished! So I had to downgrade back to 3.0. Will see what 3.1.2 will bring here to Czech Republic with Telefonica O2 operator. ;)
I am too scared to update as I had countless problems ever since I updated from 3.0!! Should have stayed on it
AT&T also released 5.6 update for iPhone settings, don't know what's new in it????? Anyone.....
This makes me so happy.
Does it multi-task now?
It multitasked 2 years ago. So yes.
Nopes ... I'm hoping they fix multitasking in OS 4.0. The Pre does it very well when you switch from calendar -> browser -> email when responding to an email and you need to check your calendar + some details on the web. My friend has pre and I played with it.
The Pre and my 3GS have the same processing power, so it can't be a h/w limitation to "do it". Apple is probably working out the software side of things out ... As a CS major I know multitasking isn't easy but I thought Apple had already solved that problem in Darwin/Mac OS X...
But yeah, valid point and so far we're still waiting!
yes, if you jailbreak it.
The not waking from sleep has been killing me. I end up rebooting 2-3 times daily (typically right when I need to get something off my phone at the bedside or in rounds, which is really awkward! Nothing like "Let me show you a picture of what we're going to do during the procedure [netter app or osirix app]... Oh, well, I guess instead we'll stand here for a couple of minutes making small talk instead...") . Hopefully this fixes it. I though something had failed in the phone, but glad it was software.
Wi-fi issue seems to be fixed
3.1 had messed up my 3G so badly that Apple finally threw in the towel and gave me a new phone yesterday.
Anyone have a problem getting their iPhone (i have 3G) to recognize that it has music on it?
Sporatically for the past 3 weeks, whenever I try to access my library on my device it just says something like "you have no music in your library, but you can buy some on iTunes!". I check my free memory and it says that it is all used up. I tried restoring a couple of times, and it fixes the problem until the next time I sync it.
Just wondering if I am the only one...
Thanks
I just had this happen after the 3.1.2 update
When on your home screen, tap the center button to go to search. The keyboard now rises from the bottom of the screen instead of shifting sideways .. WOW major advancement in the usability of my iPhone ... the networking stuff is nice though ..
@Canada1
The keyboard always slid up from the bottom like that when going to search on the phone
