To clarify, Cellular Data Network is no longer there.
That must be what carrier settings 5.6 does - removes access to Cellular Data Network.
I have iPhone 3G on Rogers here in Canada. Before yesterday, I had 3.0 Jailbreaked, worked fine for weeks, but recently, I had a lot of network drops, random crashes, ultra quick battery draining, slow slow slow OS and apps, SMS not delivered, tethering not working, etc...
I upgraded to 3.1 yesterday (and un-jailbreaked it), and all my problems are solved! The return of perfect network, no crashes, okay battery, quick OS and apps, and no more SMS not delivered (i didn't tested tethering).
Should I upgrade to 3.1.2???
Just did the upgrade on my 3GS, I hope this will fix my Wifi connection issues.
That's by the way the only real trouble I have with this phone, but it could be the router also :-p
For those who lost data today from AT&T (eg. using an iPhone with the more expensive corporate, non-iphone data plan), please read http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=799787 and then hit http://www.benm.at **from your iphone** (use wifi since your data service is down)
In short you need a new modified AT&T IPCC, which you can directly download to your iphone from http://www.benm.at ... I've not examined the difference between the old and new settings ...
It's stupid that AT&T want to tie down the plan with the phone ... Just give us a pipe and get paid for that. Comcast or Roadrunner don't tie their service plans to your desktop or laptop models.
Anyway, I'm still on 3GS, 3.0.1 + jailbreak + custom IPCC. I'll let others beta test the 3.1.x series and figure out getting the jailbreak and IPCC settled. If it aren't broke, don't fix it ... 3.0.1 = good so far!
3.1 and later can't use hacked/custom carrier files.
they need to be signed.
but other than that, great tip for those on 3.0(1)
How about a fix for MMS? Still getting "!" after exhausting all possible remedies.
I also got new carrier settings... ATT 5.6
Anyone else get that?
What a load of horse shite ! Update my ass anything else to shut you out of unlocking your phone so that you can use it as you please and stick it to the man. The best one I read was an article in CNET USA where someone actually had the cheek to say that the 3.1 update was a matter of national security, B**SH**TE ala professional.
The irony is the masses are that nieve to just piss their money away in this crap !
cool story bro
Ugh, the update didn't fix an EASY problem: the lack of clean syncing with Smart Playlists. I have to shut off live updating every time I sync just so my Recently Added playlist stays accurate. Anyone else have this problem?
That's a bug in iTunes 9. Oddly enough, the fix is to make sure one of the criteria is "Playlist IS Music". If you do that, it preserves the play order you set, and live updating still works on the computer and the device.
you can now nest levels of ALL/ANY logic, so you can fix it by changing every smart playlist to be:
Match ALL of the following:
Playlist is: Music
AND (Match ALL/ANY existing criteria...)
Hoping this fixes my issues with the iPod app on my iPhone 2G. Has been lagging horrendously since the last update.
The update didn't fix the lack of wifi I had since the 3.1 update. fuck
I am having problems with wifi on 3.1 too. When is Apple going to stop creating problems?
Perhaps they didn't say the one (possible) additional fix:
Fixed the exploit used for the soon-to-be-release 3.1 Jailbreak
I think its an firmware issue. My touch pro 2 never has a network problem. I drop about three calls a day on the iphone.
I have received a new phone from Apple for the connectivity issue which didn't fix the problem. I had to power cycle several times a day to restore connectivity. Then asked to restore as a new phone and bring in small list of contacts, then more, then all. So far so good. Then I brought in the app Yelp. Boom. Started doing it again(couldn't connect despite 5 bars and 3g symbols present). Deleted Yelp, no problems again. Anyone else?
Yet to install 3.1.2 Want to confirm this Yelp thing for another day.
I had same problem with my 2g last week, its horrible. started with requiring 2-3 restarts a day, then went on increasing every day.
My iphone was out of warranty, so I hoped that something else is wrong. Just tried replacing the old SIM card (4 years old) with a new one, and BAM !!! problem fixed.
I'm really happy that Apple is fixing these issues. I've been using the iPhone since gen 1 and am not too thrilled with some of the network issues that I've had on my new 3gs. On a side not...I've created this petition to support Flash on the iPhone. It's needed. Check it out.

Please let this fix the damn battery problem!
Please let this fix the damn battery problem!
Please let this fix the damn battery problem!
Mashing the "add comment" button makes baby Jesus cry.
With that argument, WinMo 1.0 should have never been improved and we should all be using it because it was touched by GOD!
this update just completely f***ed my 32gig 3GS i went to update in iTunes and it came up with an error message after download saying update failed and know the phone is dead, iv tried all the rescuing out of DFU tricks and still null
its off to the "genius bar" for you then...
that sux man, I feel your pain.
meeee toooooooo!!!! so f*cking angry! blue screen of death on my computer then itunes screen of death on my 32g iPhone! AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!
Yeah!
Time to go download the new SDK in all it's 2.3GB of glory.... over my AT&T Uverse 10mbits (really a unreliable 384kbps) home network connection. Can't wait to test my apps with the new system... in a few days.
I really hope this fixes my not waking up from sleep issue. It happens about 5 times a day and drives me insane. I stopped into the Apple store last week to ask a rep why it was doing this. He said it was because the OS had been corrupted when it was installed. Most likely due to my phone receiving data on the network at the time of upgrade. That made absolutely no sense to me as I have never heard of that problem. So he instructed me to restore my phone. Glad I held off.
I got all 3 of those problems that 3.1.2 fixes, except I don't want to update because I will loose my jailbreak...
I installed the new 3.1.2 today and totally fudged my iphone 3g, so i did a full wipe and update... got it to 3.1.2 and restored all my stuff from an old jailbroken restore, checked my general settings and tethering is there! anyone else have tethering working now? lol even the percentage next to the battery is still there.
it worked great ...so far so good .
@Mike
Yeah I got a carrier update after the 3.1.2 update as well, changed to ATT 5.6. Strangely the only thing I can tell that changed is that the Tethering display is now missing from Usage. Not sure if it was the 3.1.2 update of the carrier update that removed it. So looks like the carrier update didn't enable tethering like the last update added MMS finally.
Instead of power cycling your iPhones having connectivity issues, try simply putting the phone into airplane mode, pausing (yourself) and then take it out of airplane mode. Not a fix, but a quicker work around.
Just upgraded ... let's see how it goes.
Don't want to speak too soon, but the update seems to have greatly improved my coverage in my house. I'm with 3 in Australia. Anyone else getting better signal? I was lucky to get one bar indoors, now full strength.
Does it really take 300+ megs to fix 3 little bug issues? I bet they snuck some other updates in there somewhere.

Whats this ATT 5.6 about??? I just updated to 3.1.2...hope it doesnt mess up anything!!
Updated the firmware last night and everything worked great. Updated the carrier settings before driving to work. I rebooted as I normally do on my commute just because and it wouldn't boot past the apple logo. Had to DFU and restore when I got to work.
I thought the "not waking from sleep" mode was my phone crapping out. Good to hear it's just an apple software bug and not my handset dying.
I can now confirm it: this firmware did fix my wifi connection issues :)
I don't have anything left to complain about...
Well that update bricked my 3GS during the 'update process'. Itunes tells me there was an error and I must restore the damn thing. The 'restore' went ok but it's 'restored' to default condition. I have no idea what itunes did with all the regular backups of all my contacts and settings.
Genius. Well done Apple.
upgraded and after shutting down and rebooting later in the day - none of my non-apple apps will initialize.
Anyone else have this issue?
One thing I've noticed after 3.1.2 is that if I hit the sleep button while on a call it hangs up now, used to just lock the phone.
THANK GOODNESS.
I was being driven absolutely MAD because my phone suddenly started getting stuck and wouldn't wake up from sleep. It would usually happen shortly after ending a call. I was rebooting it dozens of times per day (by holding both buttons). I never associated this problem with the 3.1 update because it started happening a couple of weeks after the update. Now Apple tells me this should fix it...I sure hope so. I thought my phone was trashed, out of warranty, and I still have a contract.
Wait a minute.... I thought all these people were saying iPhone was the best phone out there and ragged on other phones for having bugs because of how polished Iphone software was/is.... So... is Apple saying iPhone is in fact, just like any other software? Prone to pretty major bugs and such? Cos that's what it looks like here.
Crashing during a stream, not waking from sleep and havign to restart to resolve network are pretty major bumps to me. SO now that it's official maybe the iguys can maybe stop harrassing other people for their phone choices?
Still, no audio bookmarking. Have to use 3.-rd party software http://www.sayagain.com/
