Amazon confirms international Kindle DX is on the way too

Amazon made a fairly big splash in announcing that the standard-issue Kindle would finally be available in an international edition, but it's now also rather quietly confirmed that the larger Kindle DX will be soon become a bit of a globetrotter as well. Unfortunately, it's also considerably more light on details this time around, although Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener does say that the international Kindle DX will come out "sometime next year," and we can only presume that it'll demand a similar premium to its smaller counterpart (which is $20 more expensive than the US-only version).

Oh yeah, there were rumors, and now its official. I can't wait for this!
who gives a shit about the kindle? its so stupid. you pay like $500 for the device only so you can get the privelage of being able to pay to buy books for it. and the screen is black and white "zomg e-ink bro" no i dont care what about the gay name its called, its the same technology in my 30 year old calculator.
Wow. A 30 year old e-ink calculator? I bet you can get a lot for that on ebay.
I sure hope Amazon isn't betting heavily on this Kindle to build it's revenue. It's all going to fall down once the Apple tablet hits the streets. Apple will sell more iPad tablets in a month than all the Kindle's combined. I think the Kindle is a great device, but people are not going to be satisfied with just owning an eReader device once the iPad comes out. I still think the Kindle should be mandatory in elementary schools.
I was thinking of getting the Sony reader pocket edition but even now I'm not really reconsidering; the restrictions and file format conversion provided by Amazon are simply stupid.
The Plastic Logic device will be out in the first quarter. I think that, and the new iRex, will render the DX, and the DX International, totally irrelevant.
Amazon admits: international Kindle users will pay more
• International buyers to be charged 40% more per book
• Admission contrasts with company's earlier comments
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2009/oct/09/kindle-charges
"International customers do pay a higher price for their books than US customers due to higher operating costs outside of the US," said the spokesman. "Additionally, VAT rates in the EU are higher on ebooks than on print books."
Those comments are in strict contrast to earlier statements by the company, in which it had said specifically that "there are no additional fees for international customers".
Is it true? If it's not cheap, why bother to buy kindle?

It's oly more expensive because amazon are being dumb. If you buy a kindle you basically get the US version which comes with an AT&T SIM (locked). So, because of this, every time you buy a book using the 3g data transfer you essentially racking up roaming charges. To offset this amazon charge an extra fee to cover those costs.
If they had any sense they'd just unlock the device and let you put any old 3g SIM in it, even PAYG.
Moronic attitude.
I'd rather have wi-fi (maybe even bluetooth) than 3g. I don't often get an impulse to read to the extent that I can't wait to get to home or work.
So you're complaining about free 3G service and you would rather have WiFi or Bluetooth. On what planet does that sound like a fair trade?
The 3G service is anything but free, especially outside the US. Since Amazon apparently failed to/didn't want to negotiate deals with local carriers, the international Kindles are in permanent AT&T roaming mode.
Which means you're paying an additional $2 per book download, and a whopping $5 per WEEK on top of any newspaper subscription fee. And emailing them a file to convert costs $1 internationally, regardless of whether the conversion is successful or not.
In addition, when ordering the Kindle, you have to handle all import fees, transport costs from the US etc yourself...and many ebooks in the Kindle store aren't even available outside the US due to copyright issues.
...so, in short, Amazon might as well not have bothered with this "international" release. Anybody with a tiny shred of sense will just shake his head and look at other options.
Oh good, another opportunity for Canada to be overlooked. (And New Zealand, and Singapore...)
By the time the Kindle comes to Canada, it'll be out if style with better options available, maybe even the rumourded Apple tablet will arrive here first.
"Amazon Piles On Kindle Fees, Increases Book Costs Outside U.S."

I think they're just trying to rub it in college students faces that they can't highlight e-book textbooks with that photo.
I think this is a bad move from amazon. They must give more details about when will the DX be released. Some people may hold the kindle 2 purchase because they don't have enought data. With a combined world release of kidle 2 and dx they would have get much more. Now some people that prefer the dx are confused because they don't know if they should wait for dx to be released or not. In my opinion they must release international dx asap (before international kindle 2 shipping starts) or they will lose a lot of compulsive consumers.
The price difference between the 6" and 10" screens shows you how much eink costs. Nothing else is different between the 2 models. Why buy a single purpose device? BTW: The library has books for FREE.
orly?
they charge me fees ...
poor me
