Maemo 6 UI concept revealed to include portrait mode, capacitive multitouch
Today at the Maemo Summit -- which we like to imagine happens in a lavish, remote mountain fortress somewhere in Finland -- Nokia dropped some interesting hints about what we can expect from Maemo 6. Look for both portrait and landscape support, multitouch, capacitive touchscreens, an "iconic user experience and integrated internet services in one aesthetic package" (as opposed to a user experience that lacks icons, integrated internet services, or aesthetics, we suppose), and a desktop significantly larger than the display, which can be navigated either vertically or horizontally: Nokia is calling this "the canvas principle," although we'd call it "possibly quite confusing" unless the design is particularly well implemented. But the designers have plenty of time for that: Maemo 6 probably won't see the light of day until late 2010. Hit the read link for plenty more mind-blowing slides.

Sorry to dissapoint you; it's in Amsterdam.
everything else is great and all... but its the zelda icon that this awesome sauce.
*makes this awesome sauce
No, what's disappointing is the lack of support for newer versions of Maemo on older devices. Correct me if I'm wrong please, Nokia, but isn't one point of a Linux platform (i.e. Maemo) support for legacy hardware? So, how can I have Apache running on a 286 but you can't get your "new" version of the same thing running on a 400MHz processor?
Nokia's take: "what happened in 2008 stays in 2008."
My take: "Buy Nokia "smartphone" or "featurephone" hardware at your own risk. It'll be obsoleted / unsupported before you can charge it up again."
SECOND. WHAT NOW
Now watch the black dude being denied a hi5: http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/09/nasa-lcross-moon-impact-in-t-minus-15-water-discovery-expected/
the n900 multiple desktops are already canvas-looking to me. still, this be a nice thing to look forward to..
Yeah! it'll support DRM!! Let's hope that means they'll cut out those pesky root-loving users who would want a Maemo device for the hack value! Let's make it as tied down and generic as every other platform!
Seriously, 2011.. Won't DRM be over? Isn't it just an irritating fad?!
Mind you, Nokia music is still DRM and microsoft heavy.. soo..
Still, on the brighter side.. QT 4.6 is fun and so long as I can legitimately "get root" I recon I'd be happy...
Multi-touch capacitive screens and the like are a plus too..
capacitive ftw!
BUT will it have a gmail app!?
Stupid, Why do you need a gmail app, when you have full browsing experience?
You can create a shortcut of gmail on your desktop. Click on it and gmail opens up. You don't need any extra app for that.
Thats the beauty of Maemo. You won't heed half of the apps that you need for other platforms like iphone, WebOS, etc.
So this is Harmattan, eh? Everything looks so organized. Perfect mix of business and pleasure.
Go Maemo Go! In the world of technology what we need is options. I see the glass half-full !!!
Windows Mobile - Android - Symbian - Maemo - Mac OS X Mobile ? Any other out there?
Internet Explorer - Safari - Opera - Fennec - Skyfire - Bolt
WebOS - Palm OS (deceased) - Symbian UIQ (I think sony ericsson still uses that platform)
That's about all I can think of =)
N900 is stupid, just like his phone counterpart. UIQ has long been dead.
Bang on!
Innovation doesn't come out of patents and copyrights, it comes from competition between groups of extremely smart and talented people.
Calm down, troll "(I think sony ericsson still uses that platform)" and I thought wrong. Pull the knife from my stomach now?
I think an OS is only dead when the last person stops using it. Maybe like language. Sure they are not being updated, but they still are significant to the people that uses them.
So, Cumbaya my loooord , cumbaaayaaaaa.... *** takes N900 to the Emergency Room as there s not an application to pull knifes off.. geez! thanks iLoveApple...***
Sure, I'll pull the knife out from your stomach and let the Hydrochloric acid destroy the rest of your internal organs.
UIQ is dead, but it's soul has been absorbed by S60.
Maemo FTW!
indeed.
Engadget headline revealed to include misspelling.
The UI looks awful. Who wants to a hunt and peck OS where you're constantly panning to find the right quadrant of the canvas to be in?
Kind of like the iPhone with 11 pages of icons? At least on maemo you can customize the backgrounds and have real content not just pages of icons.
Portrait and landscape support, multitouch, capacitive touchscreens. Very nice! Now add an 8-12MP camera with xenon, get rid of the hardware qwerty, minimum bezel around the screen and call it N950.
I'm not sure about the canvas desktop though(read jinushaun's post). I like N900's desktop(s), they are good enough.
'Reveled'? Cause for celebration, yes, but come on....
And if this new device supports T-Mobile's 1700 MHz 3G frequency I'll be set!
It's not a new device, it's just a UI concept. Future devices that run Maemo 6 may look like this.
It looks like this is going to be the real deal. Portrait mode is a huge plus and I am quite sure that I am going to buy Maemo 6 device.
Official portrait mode comes too late. I'm cancelling my N900 preorder cuz' needing 2 hands to do everything is just lame.
All main scenarios support portrait mode.
The ones that doens't support it are being worked on this very moment.
The difference is that maemo 6 will have portrait for everything.
Maybe with touch screen technology but everything else was outdated. I personally wouldn't buy a phone with outdated HVGA screen. Even my N80 has almost the same resolution and the screen is only about 2.1", stretch that to 3.5" and it wouldn't be sufficient.
The previous versions of the device could be upgraded to a completely new OS? (ie: Maemo 2 to Maemo 3). will the N900 be able to upgrade to Maemo 6?
There are no mountains in Finland...
