Sony's VAIO L 1080p all-in-one PC is perfect for rockin' moms (video)
Sony has a long history of VAIO all-in-one machines, usually taking the party line by offering swank aesthetics combined with slightly cringe-inducing price tags. When we went hands on with its latest, the VAIO L, we found it to look just as good as those earlier ones, but its $1,300 price tag to be rather fair. Built into a 24-inch, 1920 x 1080 (1080p) touchscreen it's meant to serve as both an HDTV and a PC, featuring an HDMI inport where you can plug in your PS3. Yes, that's what mom calls it before she starts rocking out with the kiddos in the video after the break. It has a 500GB drive for your apps and for DVR recordings through Windows 7 Premium, packs a Blu-ray writer, a Core 2 Duo processor, and "loads of RAM." Sure, there are cheaper ways to get an all-in-one, but only one comes standard with an inport.

Like it!
Me too! I wish this kind of thing was available when I was in college. It would be cool to have a computer that could also be a real TV.
But laptops make more sense in college...
wonder why they chose such a cheap porn soundtrack lol, milf indeed

Perfect for rockin mom's V huh?
:)
It does look like a good machine, even if it is a Sony. I love PlayStation and Sony TV's, their audio equipment is above par but overpriced (HOME), car audio is a joke, and honestly, their computers are crap. VAIO notebook virtualization fiasco anyone? anyone??
Seeing a family sitting on a couch watching a computer monitor while doing the "what what" is a bit odd and makes me feel uncomfortable.
perhaps if you stop thinking at the mum that way... close your zip...
you'll realize it's just a family!!!
pervert!
no offense eh? ;)
"Fun begins with a touch."
@ captain awesome? stop thinking of the mum in that way? how else are we to look at her? she's a woman and as such she must be objectified.
in other news, thats a pretty sweet pc. me like.
The TV's that most of us grew up with weren't as big as this thing.
By old school TV standards, this thing is by no means tiny.
For a smaller space, the size of this thing is not unreasonable at all.
Awesome.
1300 is decent too.
no imac for me after all...
I am thinking so as well.. especially because Windows is actually good now.
The $1300 model is actually nice.
If only I could get my mom off OSX... this is a great machine for the price, and we need both a new computer for her and a new small-ish HDTV right now.
I wonder if OSX86 could take the touch input.
The ps3 input, touchscreen and affordable bluray price tag is the selling point to me. But I still think they should do something to polish the touchscreen UI and a greater Graphic card (photoshop and video editing). Thats all. else looks splendid.
If it's 24", it needs to be 1920x1200.
Please for the love of all that is sacred in the geek world, stop making 1080p MONITORS.
/nerd rage
I know! And we have to keep buying these things we don't want! AAAAHHHH!
Or, maybe the people who watch more video than they edit would prefer a resolution in the same aspect ratio as many of the videos they watch. Unless 16:10 is going to become the new 16:9.
People who watch the video they edit wouldn't be doing it on one of these. This is a consumer machine, and the only reason for this switch is so the display manufacturers only have to produce one aspect ratio.
Go do that on TUAW.
I'm pretty sure she says "HDMI IN" port, as opposed to an HDMI-out port.
Who said otherwise?
FTA: "...featuring an HDMI inport..." and "...but only one comes standard with an inport."
Tim Stevens says so.
and if you read what it said on the back of the computer, it says "input", not "output".
"Fun begins with a touch " eh?
i prefer a imac and a mice to big for touchscreen.
so you want less hardware for more $$$ ?
I thought he said "i prefer a imac TOO big for touchscreen"...
..but then I figured out he was portugal. *rolls eyes*
I prefer comments that I can understand.
Oi Tim, you read this nonsense- ban this fool.
nice. but 3 on a couch watching a 24" monitor is dumb. great for a desktop or kitchen though. I want one next to my stove when I am cooking. leave the recipes on and watch CNN. I agree. lose the 1080P BS, with pixel densities available today they can go way beyond that, esp for web browsing when you need the pixel height. Fun begins w//a touch. jeeze.
Why did somebody get paid to make a video that would be considered lame by late-night commercial standards?
Whoever "wrote" the background music seems to have just discovered sequencers and wanted to make something cool like that "hip hop rap" that the kids these days are listening to.
That's what she said.
This seems like a decent display for the bedroom, as long as they keep the price down over here...
I'd really like to see if this thing can deliver HDMI Out. That's where HP's touch all-in-one pc's fail.
What for ?
actually the article is sorta wrong. At 1300 bucks all your getting is a Pentium E5400 and 320 GB of HDD space. It'll take 200 bucks more at 1499.99 to get the Core 2 Duo and 500GB of space. And if your really feeling generous u can always opt for the 1999.99 price point and get a core 2 quad with a 1TB.
Er, don't the new Asus Eee Tops have HDMI inputs too? And they're a fair bit cheaper (though somewhat less lovely) than this Sony too, I think.
HDMI-IN port for my X360 (I dont have a PS3... yet anyways)
As Johnny pointed out, the article is not correct in the features in the $1,300.00 model. On top of that, if you want a Blu-Ray WRITER, you'll need to move up to the $1,999 model. All the other models sport players only.
I went to Sony style to check this out and it looks decent but the ram is DDR2. WTF! That is DDR2 from the base model to the high end. PASS!! I wouldn't buy it any way. I'm waiting for the new I Macs to drop.C'mon guys, who the hell wants a 24 inch HD 1080p tv?
Now, if sony jacked the ram up to DDR3 and had a 42 HD 1080p, kept the dedicated video ram(PLEASE!) then we talking some serious shit. Of course the price would be through the roof so fuck it.
i liked how you defeated your own troll
I WANT THIS. But only if they cut the price down to like 650.
i hope your ass is on welfare because it sure seems like you need it
I don't see how a touchscreen TV is a good idea. You are leaving your fingerprints all over the screen after you set up your movies. so...you have to wipe the screen every time you watch something?
does anybody use the touchscreen?
$1300 canadian = $2300 us, lolz.
Seriously, better spec than the EEEtop ET2203T, and cost premium may be negligible.
That keyboard and remotes are pretty fugly, they really spoil the look of the package. The OEM Philips Media Center remotes would surely have been a better option, especially if they made it all-black with that neat piano finish.
Anyone else notice they're playing a pirated version of "Cloudy With a Chance Of Meatballs"?
Shipping date?
@secretsquirrel
It's a Sony picture -- so they PROBABLY had permission.
the thing about touch screen is FINGER PRINTS!!! it's bad enough on your phone but I don't want my computer screen covered in greasy finger print all the time, it's bad enough in work when someone is pointing something out and you end up with loads of dots over your nice clean monitor
I want that keyboard.
Agreed. I would ditch my Logitech Wave in a heartbeat for that keyboard, but it's nowhere to be found other than bundled with this All-In-One.
The screen is amazing. I had the chance to check it out during the filming of the video and I fell in love with it. I agree about that finger prints on the screen can be annoying, but I think interacting with the screen through touch is a benefit is worth it. I loooove that you can use it as a tv as well...brilliant! It's about time.
oh and...Das Boot - I must be objectified because I'm a woman? You're hilarious. Love to have you sitting across the board room table from me. I'd eat you alive :p Of course, I mean that in the nicest of way :)
If you value reliability, good service and your business, I would NOT even touch Sony with a barge pole, hope this saves others from serious down-time when using VAIOs for business. I am absolutely convinced Sony VAIO is designed to fail and a complete rip-off. They should be avoided for their lousy and incompetent customer service, especially in Europe.
Once it BSODs you have an expensive brick, go with a manufacturer that *tries* to backup their products, it’s a scandal the way Sony handled the GPU problem.
Look's pretty cool to me, kinda reminds me of Minority Report. I think my kids would like it, are there more games for the touchscreen?
But I would choose this over iMac for a very lame excuse that I haven't used OSX in my lifetime :P
Where can i get ym hands on such a slim keyboard?... anyone, please? :)
I saw this computer in Hong Kong, the multi-touch is not soo good/ look my video http://www.techguru.com.br/sony-vaioL-deu-vontade-de-ter-um.htm
The multi-touch does seem to lag quite a bit on some of those applications.... I'd want to "experience" this machine before making a purchase. Other than that, it looks to be a compelling package.
looks like hell to me - trying to cram too much into one box. Better off with a laptop and a TV. Like the ability to have video / photo library available but no need for powerful hardware for that. Blu-ray won't be around for long - no point in building up a collection there - better off streaming HD... Cloud is the way fwd.
