Blackra1n jailbreak now available for iPhone OS 3.1.2, iPod touch 3G
Wow, judging by our tips jar we'd say you're all pretty darn excited about Geohot's Blackra1n jailbreak, which lets you open up iPhone OS 3.1.2 devices including the iPod touch 3G and new iPhone 3GSs -- but you can't unlock yet, so don't get any big ideas about switching carriers. Windows-only at the moment, but with this level of enthusiasm out there we can't imagine a Mac version is far behind.

yup
Really, you are going to go to T-Mobile.....have fun over there.
the dude who made this is EPIC!
rank me high plz 8D
I would, but I can't read your comment, sorry.
boom roasted!
Already did it... best Jailbreak I;ve ever used.
Yep. That was the easiest jailbreak Ive ever done (been doing it off and on since 1.1.4).
Although looking at his face on my phone for a minute was a little disturbing....
After Cydia upgraded I had some connection issues to the front page (of cydia). Anyone else?
Same here, with the Cydia connection issues.
I'm thinking maybe their servers are getting slammed with big updates because of the ra1n release?
I don't use Cydia anymore... The new Rock App is amazing. I jailbroke, installed Rock, and Rock instantly recognized it needed to restore, and reinstalled all of my apps. The whole process from update to finished was less than 5 minutes.
It's almost as if Engadget is...encouraging people to hack their phones.
Beware of celltower terrorism.
Is there anything bad happen if you just use itunes to upgrade to 3.1.2 for an ipod touch 2g? From there you use black rain, correct?
Toasted my 3.00 install. Restore had to be used and danged if iTunes didn't insist on going to 3.1.2. So much for unlockable baseband! I have no desire to unlock but was trying hard to hang onto it. I hadn't been keeping up with the other unlock aps and of course the 3.1.1 Dev Team app ASSumed I was unlocked. Too much hassle and while this one toasted my baseband due to a failure it worked PERFECTLY on 3.1.2! I suppose I could have screwed around to try and hide 3.1.2 from iTunes but meh, it's done.
Not to me... I had to restore my iPhone 17 times before getting it to work. Tried it in different computers... Finally got it to work in my MBP running Windows 7 64 bit for some odd reason.
I have also seen many posts of people having all kinds of different problems...
I detect a hint of irony.
now we just need a unlock app and were good to go
And 2009 won't be like 2009
ch0colatera1n = Epic diarrhea. I say the next one will be g0ldenshow3r.
Fuck, I failed hard with that reply click.
bah ... you can low rank me if you wish.... Blackrain doesn't sound quiet hygienic.
However, Let Freedom Ring for the iPhone in the East, the West, and Australia.
It doesn't have quiet hygiene because its too busy not dropping your calls.
so this jailbreaking process increased call quality and reduces dropped calls?
Redsn0w, yellowsn0w, purplera1n, and now blackra1n...
What I'm waiting for is ch0colatera1n.
Can someone please explain to me what the benefits of jailbreaking are? I understand switching carriers on the iphone (but not this jailbreak where it doesn't unlock), but what does it do for you? Especially for the ipod touch?
TIA, sorry for being a noob
Every app for free.
background applications, free apps, video recording on the 3G, themes, tons of customization, SBSettings, and emulators and other apps that apple won't allow on the appstore (GV mobile)
or...if ripping people off isn't your thing, cydia has a ton of cool features like winterboard to change how your phone looks, sbsettings, ultrasn0w, etc.
Jailbreaking has nothing to do with carriers. That's unlocking (You have to jailbreak to unlock, but you don't have to unlock to jailbreak.) It gives you another method of installing apps outside the AppStore, where you can get your hands on oft requested features like a status lock screen, background tasks, significantly better SMS, tethering, etc.
Jailbreak + Appsync = Free Apps
That's worth.
It lets you pirate apps, and install apps outside the app store. Most people that I know that jailbreak their iPhones did it to get free/pirated apps and emulators, and use skins that look like Winamp in the 90s. LOL.
NOTE: Pirating apps is illegal (But no one gives a..)
I still don't see the draw... themes, customization?? Is there a killer app on Cydia that isn't on the app store?
btw, as far as pirating apps, this isn't music with studios taking all the cash (which is still unethical to do) ... ripping off iPhone developers takes away from their ability to create new apps and exist altogether. Not cool.
@loosely_coupled
I pirate my apps to test them because AFAIK Apple doesn't give you your money back if you delete a paid app. So I download the app for free, test it out, if I like it I delete it and then buy the official app. If I don't like it thats money staying in my pocket.
I'm not saying its good, but oh well.

SBSettings (screen gesture instant access to a simple control panel that allows you to adjust screen brightness, kill unused processes, toggle wifi, BT, SSH, geolocation, etc)
GV Mobile (read up on this amazing application)
Tethering (broken in 3.1, still available in 3.0 and earlier)
Winterboard (this application allows more than skinning, i use it to have a 5 colunm springboard and dock.
Categories (group your apps, ie. games, utilities, finance into their own button... easier than swiping through 9 pages of apps)
You should really just jump in and try it, the functionality provided by the above apps is why i have stayed with the Iphone, so far.
@loosely_coupled
If you're looking for a killer app how about being able to run apps in the background. Easily done using Backgrounder yet apple refuses to let you do the same thing in the official updates.
I stake my e-reputation on the fact that Apple does not allow background processes for one simple reason: AT&T is worried about their failing network getting slogged by the background transfers/feeds/streams/etc. Running background Pandora radio for instance, while surfing the intarwebs.
Apple gurus, anything out there that can make the ipod touch sync my home server's music/playlist thru WIFI?
@where u at?
Same here
@lettcco
try Simplify Music 2 form the app store
Thanks logicbomb,
however this probably wont work for me as I want to leave my ipod touch in the car and only sync for new songs before I drive away from my house.
didn't work for me, just got stuck on running... and i just restored my phone. just gonna wait for the 3.1.2 release of redsn0w.
wait is this jailbreak untethered yet? because ironically i was about to go look this up and i loaded engadget first and this is what i got. i love this website.
wow, that was the easiest and fastest way to jailbreak ever. I'm impressed
I tried it on my 3G and no luck, left it in usb screen, ended up having to restore which i hate doing! 30 seconds....yeah right! More like 2 hours of restoring! grr
same thing happened to me, rearranging my homescreens now....
what OS are you running? Vista XP or 7? 32 bit or 64 bit?
