Portable NES modded into a cartridge, hearts modded into love
We've seen NES mods that incorporate a screen and controls into a cartridge in the past, but this example from Airz in BenHeck's forums is just so clean and well-polished that we had to give it some love. Inside Airz says it's just a generic Chinese media player that can play NES, Gameboy, and Gameboy Color ROMs, along with the relevant controller bits, a 2.8-inch LCD, 4GB of storage, and a rechargeable battery. Oh, and if you're feeling particularly retro, you can hook it up over TV-out and play on the big screen. Not bad -- and it's for sale if you're as in love as we are. Video after the break.

Very nice indeed. Better than some of these poor mods you see.
If your wondering, this is the MP4 he used.

What makes it awesome is the fact that he soldered the leads to an actual nes controller.
Not the greatest controller in the world, I've got to say. I remember the days of button mashing and I never had to half-step it to blaze a trail through Mario. Meh, whatever. it's a clean mod.
And he used a digital camera to record the video...how queer.
Would you have preferred 8mm film?
To be honest, yes. But I get the point.
Great mod.
I hope he can slow down the music so it gives the proper retro feelings...
the problem is that in running a PAL rom on a NTSC system, so it plays the sound to fast. its not a problem with the unit, just used the wrong rom file.
That's a cool mod. And it was quite smart of him to use what he had at hand to record the video....
Two comments about the camera.
Have you guys never seen them being used for video? It's quite common. Especially on mobile phone review sites.
thats cool as hell. now he just needs to make thousands of them so i can buy one
WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE?!?
Is this science?

@thePoet
Man that vid there causes scissure!!!!
And what, pray tell, is scissure?
It's the use of scissors to create fissure. This guy must be doing some really heavy duty work in the field of nuclear science, because apparently they can do stuff with just a pair of Fiskar's now!
Excellent choice of game. Startropics...definately on my list of awesome old skool IP's that need to be refreshed on current systems.
I agree 100%. That was one of my favorite games for NES.
Nice! Now I'd like to see the impossible, where the cartridge becomes compatible as the original Super Mario Bros. when inserted into a standard NES.
Why? That's like taking three steps back into your cave...
It's probably possible, if you've ever seen the inside of an north America nes cartridge there's a whole bunch of empty space.
Sup dawg,
I heard you like Nintendo,
so I a Super Mario in your Super Mario bros.
now you can 1up while you 1up
So where's the eBay link? I'm ready to bid like it's hot.
How do I get one of these !!!!.. I want one
Find this guys house. Stab him. Steal it. VOILA!
buy a one station. All he did was take a one station or similar chinese media player and change the case.
@nnahas: It's still fantastic execution... I would definitely buy one if it was commercially available.
@nnahas
Yes thats right, *all he did* was shove a PMP into a NES cartridge, *all* Ben Heck does is shove XBOXs into a laptop, simples x
wow lawl now thats just epically classic thing ;D
would make more sense if he use a startropics cartridge.
Idiotic. Why ruin the front? Incredible stupidity. It could just have easily had the screen on the back and you'd still have the cool artwork on the front. Then, when selling them (someone is bound to someday) you could get your favorite nes game, or at least artwork, raped and pillaged for some quasi-geek cred.
Credit where credit is due! this is still pretty great.
Where do you plug the cartridge in?
Yeah I agree that this is the best thing ever.
Yo dawg, we heard you like NES cartridges.
now im happy for you nintendo, and ima let you finish, but AIRZ HAS ONE OF THE BEST NES'S OF ALL TIME! OF ALL TIME!
Miyamoto be praised!
I saw someone mention in the forums about using a 72 pin connector to charge it, but how cool would it be if he took an old NES top-loader, gutted it, made a custom board, and wired the PCM/72 pin connector so that the controls, power, and video out were transferred to the NES's controller ports, video out, and power supply, so when he's at home, he can just dock the pNES and play it on the big screen like he was actually playing the old NES?
It would be like an iPod Dock, but for a portable NES.
That would actually be pretty easy, because he already has the circuitry for the video out and power, and knows how map an nes controller to the device (which is what he did to make the controls).
Not only is that awesome, he's got one of my favorite games on screen! Star Tropics FTW!!
Is it me or was the Super Mario Bros playing with a faster framerate? Or just fast music?
I noticed it too, it sounds like the pitch was higher. I kinda like that way.
sorry i used a PAL rom on a NTSC system, thats why the sound is sped up.
hardcore enough to mod an mp4player into an authentic cartridge, yet still plays mario without holding down the run button? fishy.
HOW CAN I PURCHASE THIS??
