HTC promised way back at
Mobile World Congress in February that the
Touch Pro2 would be fully upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.5 when the binaries went gold, and... well, here we are. Sure enough, they're making good on the promise by rolling out official updates for both the Touch Pro2 and the
Snap so far, though this is one of those situations where availability for your particular version of the phone is going to depend on carrier branding, locking, and the phase of the moon, among other things -- so if the updates don't work for you, you can wait for your carrier to get in gear or, you know, try your luck over with the always-helpful xda-developers to roll your own update.

Woot ! I hope these are also upgradable to 7 :(
it would be best if they were upgradeable to Android. If they are, then great!
Unfortunately they arn't. Winmo 7 requires a capacitive touch screen and a digital compass among other things which this device doesn't have. I'm sure it will be hacked to support it, but no official support. Android IS more likely since the hardware in this is very similar to other HTC android phones as far as specs go.
See, THIS is where MS is missing the boat.
Did Apple stop offering software updates to the original iPhone, once the 3G was released? NO, they recognize that the existing user base deserves bug fixes and new features.
Whatever.
Thing is, WinMo 7 is likely going to be a major rewrite. Think of the jump from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. Not the jump from Vista to 7. Or iPhone OS 2.0 to 3.0 (which didn't even bring every feature to old iPhones. Can't do voice commands with the original or the 3G).
Crawdad, does Apple offer bug fixes for OS 8? How about OS 7.6? Jeez, it's like they don't care about their user base! You have to realize that there's a point when it's not worth updating things anymore.
@crawdad689
Snow Leopard doesn't support non-intel Macs, nuff said.
doesnt work for my verizon touch pro 2. it doesnt like the serial number.
Same here. Stupid Verizon. They probably won't release it to us at all.
Won't happen. Not that fast anyway. MS is way too entrenched in this market to dry up in just a year. They will hurt, but they won't dissappear.
Upgrade not available for my VZW TP2. Crap.
now all HTC need to do is get the Diamond2 update out they promised in february
Guys, that's not cool, I just reported that new to you and you gave thanks to Smartphone Thoughts ???
That's not cool at all!
Regards.

prepare for downrank!
That said, WimMo certainly does seem to be the least popular, among RIM, Apple, and Android, though the legions of Engadget-reading WM users (read: pretty much all WM users) will certainly argue otherwise.
No body here complain about Verizon? the HTC Touch Pro 2 are still "Out-of-stock" on their website.
@WinMo__is_trash:
While Android and the iPhone are good platforms, some people prefer
Windows Mobile.
Why do I bother reasoning with you? It's no use. Your head is so far
up your anus it's deplorable.
Why does Engadget let idiots like you post crap like this?
For such an amazing tech blog, you'd think they would would've
already banned accounts like the above person's. Their username alone
quantifies their ignorance.
Oh well, the least anyone can do is down vote morons like him.
PS: I apologize for my English, as I am still learning.
You're dumber than someone that thinks Michael Jackson's "This Is It" is a hit
What makes you say that? It's up to the carriers and OEMs to decide if they still want to carry WinMo.
If nobody is buying the phones, there's no incentive to keep them alive, unless Microsoft sends truckloads of cash their way to keep them in stores until WinMo 7 is released.
What are the Windows Mobile 7 Requirements from Microsoft the Commandments as I say
#1. Must have capacitive touch screen
#2. Must have dedicated 3D GPU graphics
#3. must have 3.5mm headphone jackk
#4. support for 16 Million colors no more 65k
#5. Have over 288MB RAM over 512MB ROM
#6. 600mhz CPU or faster
any one have the official memo
Yes, I got one. It is called iPhone Spec!
no love from me to ms 6.x stuff my love will grow after 7.x ... just maybe!
actually I am more of a Palm fan then winmo.
I much preferred PalmOS over PPC2003 back in the day. I jumped back and forth about half a dozen time, by WinMo left me disappointed every time.
I thought I was going to jump to WebOS, but the reports of the hardware quality of the Pre (and the fact that I have VZW) left me cold.
Now I have a VZW TP2, and am very happy with it. So far, I haven't experienced any of the problems that my former winmo pda's gave me. This phone is great. I wouldn't want a capacitive screen; the TP2 lets me do everything I want without a stylus, plus gives me really fine control so I can manipulate a lot of information (such as in a registry editor or file explorer) with accuracy.
How many times can you post in the same thread (after repeatedly being downranked) before you are official an IDIOT?
That being said, when was the last time you owned a WinMo phone? Ever?
I'd just really like to know if the verizon vx6900, their version of the HTC Touch, is getting an update. Or if it's even possible. It's running 6.1 at the moment.
well it didnt work for me and my Tmobile Touch Pro 2 and i saw some person write it didnt work for there verizon one to so i guess its for sprint???? idk oh well...fuck windows mobile...its N900 for meeeeeeeeeee
no wonder windows mobile sucks ass ...such a boring op system
Toshiba jus released the TG01 WM6.5 rom too: http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2009/10/14/toshiba-tg01-windows-mobile-6-5-update-available/
Yeah it didn't work for my verizon TP2 either.
shucks..
any possibility of this OS coming out for the Zune HD somehow? Just curious.
nah, and I hope it doesn't. I am using a samsung jack right now, still waiting on the update from samsung, but the zune interface is soooo much sleeker. WinMo 7 will be awesome when that comes around, and I'm looking forward to getting my phone up to 6.5 soon. WinMo 6.1 on the jack seems dated, I want something flashy and STABLE!
Anyone hear if the 6.5 rom for the Samsung Jack is coming anytime soon? Was supposed to be the first phone around upgradable to 6.5, and I have to say, it's probably gonna be a while. I feel a little cheated.
So, this update is available on the EU site. Does anyone happen to know generally how long it will be before it reaches US carriers? Will this wait be similar in time to waiting for handsets to get here, or (hopefully) much shorter?
wouldn't accept the serial number for my sprint TP2
As of now this update is strictly for GSM phones (T-Mobile, AT&T). It does not work on CDMA phones (Sprint, Verizon).

Did anyone find those 2 sentences redundant?
"This utility updates the ROM on your phone.
During the update, the ROM Update utility will:
allow you to update the ROM image on your PDA phone."
MS must have hired someone out of the military to script their message boxes.
Yeah, too bad it can multitask, install apps from anywhere (without being hacked), and has a fully customized interface from a company that knows more about phone interface design than Apple does.
Oh, not to mention Flash. You're lucky I can't still hold MMS over your head.
engadget really needs to flex their banhammer muscle more often.
Wait, are you saying that the next iPhone will be a copy of this design?
My TP2 is running so well with TF3D under 6.1 that I have no real desire to upgrade to 6.5. I've got it on my Trinity and I'm not really seeing a difference unless it'll be faster. Think I'll wait til 7 is released.
Agreed. Stylus oriented OS like WinMo is a thing of the past like MS-DOS.
The real question is how much support WinMo users will get from MS a
year from now. The answer is probably NONE if you were to ask the
Sidekick users.
@Hutchinson
One word: Asia.
So anyways, Engadget hasn't taken my tip. But for those interested for the Pro 2 on ATT (Tilt 2), it is currently available as an upgrade option to premier (corporate) members. Just ordered mine yesterday Oct 13 and it is currently being shipped.
Does anyone here know when the HTC Touch Pro 2 will be back in-stock at Verizon?
Zip over to xda-developers.com and get 6.5 plus a bunch of bonus material.
