Hey, what do you know, Acer just kicked out its first Android handset into the mystical kingdom of donuts and Snapdragons. Liquid, a rebranded (and slightly restyled)
A1, brings a 800 x 480 WVGA capacitive touchscreen upon which you'll watch Android 1.6 ride that peppy Snapdragon processor. It's presumably tuned to 1GHz (or higher) and not 768MHz as
listed on the eXpansys Germany spec-sheet -- a trick that'll make this the fastest Android handset on the planet. Of course, what would Android be without some tweaking? Acer promises a bevy of unique features such as improved power management, a new UI with tight entertainment and web integration, geo-tagging, a "Spinlets" application for access to streaming video and music, and full address book integration with Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and other social media houses. Unfortunately, that's all the detail that Acer's willing to spill at the moment; dates, real specs, and prices when we get 'em.

I'm sorry, your post is too small for me to read, due to me pressing report by accident.
wherez HTC ??? wake up....fire up ur dragonnnnnn
Getting excited with 1ghz? Notice they never ever mention the usage hours. :)
@Alfred
What's this "hours" you speak of?
LOL. you win today buddy
wherez HTC ??? come HTC ....fire up ur dragon
Man, I've been waiting on native 800x480 Android devices. I can't believe Acer beat HTC to the punch on this as HTC is usually the resolution king but hey, I might actually take a good long look at this phone.
DO WANT! My G1 is looking old :P
Your g1? My 3gs is looking old compared to this! I miss my android apps.
Your 3gs looks old compared to anything HTC produced in the last 3 years
This explains why HTC sales has been on steady decline the past 3 years!
Where is slide-out keyboard? Why there is no android phone with slide-out keyboard AND proper processor?
Samsung Moment...
I still want a keyboard so it's the Sholes for me.
this looks no different to the neoTouch/F1.
It shouldn't be long before we are able to dual boot these phones with WinMo and Android. These are the 2 kings of the openOS scene and manufacturers, in order to reduce costs and maximise profits, will create common platforms and only implement minor changes across both types of phone.
I agree, they should make mobile phones more like pc's or laptops. Interchangeable operating systems and leave it on the consumer which OS they want to run. WINMO, ANDROID, WEBOS etc.... and let apple do what it does with their stuff. Basically the same choice users have today with linux, windows, osx
If for example texas instruments were to be to ARM processors, the same as intel is to x86, we might someday see standard arm chipsets the same way we see standard intel chipsets. Depending less and less on the hardware manufacturer to create custom embeded images to be flashed to these handsets.
Instead have ASUS and the like just put it all together as they do today with their motherboards using intel chipsets
THE HTC DRAGON DOES NOT HAVE THE SNAPDRAGON IT WAS A RUMOR.
THE CAPS LOCK DOES NOT HAVE TO STAY ON ALL THE TIME THAT WAS A RUMOR
Just because you annoy us with CAPS doesn't mean it's FACT, how about some EVIDENCE to support you claim?
These kind of "releases" are so annoying. I could write a press release for a device too, if I never gave any real specs, dates, or prices. It's just a waste of time. Ahem, now, about that Sholes...
I'm pretty sure that Facebook Address Book integration is the hot new feature that nobody ever wanted.
Its not a showstopping feature but it always nice to have your contacts updated automatically with data from facebook (picture, status, email, etc). Something less for you to take care of.
Facebook integration is Sense UI is pretty good.
I agree with Facebook integration being useful. You can get (depending on the user) phone numbers, email addresses, birthday, pictures, and live status updates straight to the Contact page, rather than that information being spread out.
Don't get me started on what else the Contacts section of Sense can do...I
Yeah, but Palm's Synergy facebook integration is useless. It puts all of your Facebook "friends" into your contacts. So that dude you used to know 15 years ago, now he's in your contacts clogging up room for people you actually want to contact.
I want it.
I think it's revolutionary honestly. Think of people you're face-friends with who's phone number you don't have, email, etc. If that stuff was ported, it would beef up your contacts list big time
I have my doubts on this phone's "fit and finish" as well. I guess time will tell...
800x480 with 1GHz! Brilliant! That's nearly the same specs as the Acer Travelmate C110 Tablet PC sitting right here next to my Mac. Only difference is up to 1024x768; but who's splitting nits?
These are now *truly* Pocket PC's despite the earlier Windows misnomer for an earlier generation of relatively featureless PDA's. Given the newest breed of specs and functionality, it's absurd to keep calling these devices "phones." Call 'em PokeComs, pocket computers that do voice communications as 1/1000 of their total capabilities, or call them Wowie Zowies, I don't care what you call them, but please, lets stop calling them "phones."
Point of reference: I've beat up an Acer Travelmate C110 TabletPC for years. After tons of abuse, it finally lost a few keys (it's okay, I use the stylus mostly on the tablet) and a plastic hinge cover; but the hardware is still in use, running XPSP3 and serving its functions well. Bottom line, I've been impressed with Acer's physical toughness, particularly given the neglect and abuse.
Pokemons!
If the build quality on this is good this is def my next phone. If it's really just a Neo Touch with a cap screen then it is super thin 3.5 mil headphone jack, and 1ghz snapdragon. OOOOH, can't wait. It'll be my G1Killer.:) I'll have to decommission my G1 it looks haggard.:)
Now THATS an Android phone.
Now those are some tits!
Cute. But what about battery life?
It is said to have "Improved power management to help achieve longer battery autonomy for intense users".
I think this phone looks great. With the new partnership between Verizon and Google and Android 1.6's ability to run on GSM or CDMA I'm hoping Verizon gets this thing. Especially since the HTC HD2 has been rumored to go with T-mobile.
HD2 + T-Mobile = Fail
Verizon? How about AT&T, I'm on a shitty family plan so either I stay on and save money or go venture by myself and spend 80 dollars a month. This phone seems sweet, I cant wait to see this in action and I hope it comes to AT&T, along with the xperia X3.
The Snapdragon is actually pretty efficient (though from what I've read, not quite up to Tegra performance). Either is far superior to earlier mobile CPUs like Qualcomm's older generation chipsets, and from the sounds of it, better than than the Cortex-A8 which powers the iPhone 3GS.
Android certainly COULD use a boost in battery efficiency. After muddling through a G1 and a Hero, I find the battery life of the OS horrible, considering that comparable devices with the same battery/CPU running WinMo with the same basic usage last WAY longer (as well as running Android on my WinMo phone, which drains the battery WAY faster). I keep the WinMo phone around for the ultra cheap unlimited internet. ;)
Until Android addresses the power consumption (better OS optimization, or bigger batteries in the devices), I can't see making Android my 'go to' OS.
resumably? maybe presumably?
Time to blow all my Android Market money on this. It most probably won't have US HSDPA bands, but a guy can dream...
I wonder how big that screen is....
If this is how that donut looks like from the outside, I can't wait to dig my teeth into its inside and enjoy that awesome filling.
Only question is, is this too soon? Did Asus just attempt to throw together this stuff as fast as they can trying to beat HTC to the punch to cross that 528mhz boundary with Android? Admit, it is a nice looking phone! Just wonder how long 'til we get the upgraded androids to the stateside...
bah, I meant Acer...
done. just done. 1ghz 800x480 android. this is what i was waiting for.
good bye sweet g1
What needs to happen now is for a company like Acer (ie Asian Monster) to run these off at a really good price, al the other manafactures are trying to get premium price tags/plans attached to them
ignore previous post, engadget deleted the spammer while i was typing :(
Thats the device that anybody asked for... Android lovers, come on, buy 50 of them to enjoy crappy ui, pre-alpha os and a whole bunch of useless apps
iphone fanboy much ?
Android has almost every app I need. SSH, VNC, Google Voice, etc. The only app that the Iphone has that I want to come to Android is the Guinness Pub Finder.
I bet you're a real joy to be around in real life.
