I use a iPhone, but any smartphone would do. No extra cost if you need a phone anyway. At the moment I have about 350 books on it, SF, mystery, general, new and public domain, in many formats. I buy from Amazon (Kindle), Baen , etc. wherever the content is cheaper.
Battery life sucks but that is a small price to pay for the advantages. I'm trying to limit the number of gadgets in my pocket. Unless you need to highlight and annotate or want to read comics and use graphics the iPhone screen is big enough. I get 100 words per page so it is quite adequate.
