Motorola Droid (alias Sholes) finally gets a decent headshot
At last eluding the omnipresent Mr. Blurrycam, Motorola's Android-powered Sholes handset has finally gotten the sort of photography it deserves, apparently with an official go-to-market name of Droid -- or at least one decent photo of it. This pic, which doesn't really confirm or deny any of our suspicions about the device (Verizon was already in the bag), made a berth on the locked Twitter profile of Boy Genius, and hopefully there's more where this came from: we're getting tired of the tease.

i really want an android phone on verizon my omnia is nice but i want something fresh. Its this or the htc android device. but they really should release more info on the two especially if the rumors are true about them coming at the end of the month
I agree! More info on the Droid would be awesome (I'm assuming the Verizon verison of Hero wouldn't be all that different than Sprint's, I could be wrong though, but either way, there's tons of info on Sprint's Hero on teh netz).
I had an Omnia and haaaaaated it, so I switched back to my old Alias. I may even get an Android phone without being eligable to upgrade, depends on how expensive it'd be though :/
If it indeed has the name "Droid" at release, I will ABSOLUTELY get it! fuck yeah!
same, i would probably ditch my somewhat new blackberry ha.
Motorola Droid looks promising from the early Review that I read. It has much higher specs, a good processor, good camera with flash and loads of other things.
Some guys still don’t get it. Its not about “how good the other phone” is from the other pair of shoes.
But on how can it improve the lifestyle of the user who is utilizing it.
Next year a new phone will arrive.. again and again, till you realize: important thing is “how it made your life easier” in terms of communication. Not who is best phone in town.

Can we get some UI shots of this thing already? Why is Moto/VZW keeping this thing so secluded, we all know it's coming. Bait the waters guys, generate some buzz. God knows Moto needs a home run on this one.
thou shalt check the read link before posting ;)
ok to be honest, it's from mr. noisycam...

Bait the waters? This thing is already hyped. With the Chocolate Touch falling flat due to no being closer to the BL40, this is THE phone I know that VZW people are talking about. As far as being "a smartphone by VZW's standards", there's no way something like this would NOT be a smartphone on ANY carrier.
Maybe I'm just more hyped about it being a Verizon slave that's been waiting for something good to come along, but the hype with all the "leaks" is definitely there. I do have to agree that Moto needs help and "this is the droid they're looking for".
I wish it didn't that that little chin thing...
I agree; or, if it's absolutely necessary, I wish the lip was silver, black, or some other color other than drab gray. Either way, I am still pumped to get this thing (finally a decent smartphone on Verizon), and I'm sure that after a few weeks I won't even care about the lip.
finally some pics.... those motorola 'sholes have kept us waiting for so long
nice looking phone. i wonder if verizon will require a data plan with this phone like they do with their blackberry devices.
Count on it. You're gonna have to pay to play with this guy.
Well, it's a smartphone by VZW's standards so yes, absolutely you'll need the data plan
"These are not the droids you are looking for."
If beauty truly is in the eyes of the beholder, the person who signed off on that design must be blind.
Judging from your Display Picture, you are not at master at finding or designing beauty... So, no soup for you...
is it a requirement that everything that runs android must look bland and dated?
...i'm starting to see a trend here.
thats a picture of the phone settings screen inside the menu, what are you expecting from that? I dont know, maybe the iphone has some cool innovative way to tell you when version of the operating system is running. Not saying the 2.0 is going to be anything special, but im atleast going to wait until i see a picure of the homescreen or menu to decide that.
i am talking about the actual device itsef, not the OS. it looks so bland and uninspired. just like the g1 and most other android devices. if you say this is a nice, sleek design you're kidding yourself. looks like the LG Dare with a chin. and why bring iphne into this? just because i don't like this design doesn't mean i am automatically an iphone fan, i don't and probably never will own an iphone as a matter of fact.
I get what you're saying, I felt the same way about the G1 until I actually played around with one in person. It was actually really slick when you actually got a hold of it. So while this one looks equally drab, if not worse, I'm withholding judgement until I get my mitts on it.
I think the Hero is one of the nicest looking phones out there and for some bizarre reason i'm drawn to the DEXT/CLIQ apart from its thickness.
The real issue is these touchscreen phones are pretty simple and straightforward. Large screen followed by a few buttons.
Will this phone be dual mode? GSM and CDMA?
I think it looks great. I like the design, like the specs and (if the newer blurry pictures are accurate) like the keyboard. I will get this phone, the only question is what carrier will I get it on. Most likely verizon, but if somehow someway sprint gets it in the near future, I will save the money and go that route. Either way, I will most likely use G Voice, and will probably buy the phone without subsidy.
android version 2.0?
yes
not confirmed
not officially confirmed but it is a fact. You'll see
I'll have one w/o the keyboard, please.
Does anyone have spec. information as of today? This looks to be another neat Android phone!

Good to see Mr Blurrycam has finally discovered http://steadycam.org/
Android 2.0? Looks like the Samsung CEO was dead wrong on Eclair not shipping until 2010...
Yea, That's what i noticed too. Last I heard, Android 2.0 wouldn't be released until 2010. Can anyone confirm that it will be shipping with Android 2.0?
This is supposed to be the first phone with 2.0, the rest of the phones will be stuck with 1.6 for the next few months.
2.0 will be available only on the sholes/tao/droid (STD) until Q2 2010. Thats when there will be a full public release. So the Samsung rep wasnt exactly wrong, he just failed to explain that there actually will be one device that will have 2.0
I wish Google would release new versions of AOSP to the public before manufacturers... they did this with HTC and 1.5 too.
Mr. Samsung was referring only to his company, it appears. It probably helps when your company has a new "alliance" with the OS provider.
You are welcome Engadget, I am glad you posted it. ;) I think I peed on my pants when I saw the pics at BGR
This isn't the Droid I am looking for.
I am putting an R2D2 skin on the back of this when it comes out
It's totally the droid I'm looking for.. just not so much VZW..
I would like it even better if it still had the three face buttons along with getting rid of the "MOTOROLA" on top
what's so freaking good about android?!!!! Hell!
Android this and that. Please. The only thing android is good for is raising google's damn stock price. And that shit climbed big time.
And what's so good about google? Telling their advertisers where you be every time you're on their tech.
Big brother on your ass like a pimple!
Yummy.
What happened to the sexy chrome edged version? this version looks boring
Not impressed with that build at all. I'm a huge Motorola fan, and was hoping they'd deliver, but this thing is just bland, and rather ugly.
I love it when people make judgements on how a phone looks based off some crappy, blurry, noisey shakecam shot like this.
uglyphone is ugly :|
what the hell were they thinking
Wow
motorila has has 2 years n 9 months to create
their version of he iPhone. Moto been making phones fir 18 years
apple comes along n with their first schools n owns rapes motorila
How sick is that.
To think my 2nd cell was a motorola in 1997
I still have it.
(aliAS SHOLES)
Larf.
Yes because out of all the ones that look even somewhat close, this is the winner of the knock off apple contest, with absolutely no resemblance other then it has a touch screen.
This device looks as outdated as RIMs operating system.
I have read that the colors available will be all black or platinum.
Inspiration? The iPhone is just a screen with 1 button. Not exactly new, groundbreaking or innovative.
BOOM! Headshot!
ULTRA KILL!
yup, that is the moto droid, had it in my hands 3 days ago at my vzw store. Kinda weird setup, too edgy for my taste, has slide out keyboard. Seems like touchscreen keyboard doesn't shift sideways only when you slide it open. Not sure about the looks really, kinda like HTC Imagio looks better, will see. It will be interesting to see new Storm 2, HTC Imagio and Pro2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 and this Droid creature fight for dumb customers who have no clue about what smart phones are for. There should be another one coming soon, probably from HTC, seems like VZ is ditching Blackberry slowly but surely. $30 data plan is a must. No way around it, it's not Alltel anymore my friends.
Looks REALLY, REALLY boring.
Yawn.
