Nokia N900 can ride the Google Wave
We're not talking about some mobile version here à la iPhone, no sir. MobileDeveloperTV has itself a Maemo-powered Nokia N900, and sure enough, it runs the full version of Google Wave. There looks to be some lag between the keyboard and text box, but if you're hankering to mash up Espoo's latest and greatest with the G man's latest and greatest, there's nothing standing in your way. See for yourself, victorious laughs and all, in the video after the break.

+1 to Mark.
truth??
Ok high rank time
n900 has revolUtionized the cell phone industry !
That was painful to watch. He lost me when he pulled out the stylus
Only because Google Wave is sooooooo tiny on a device that size. I'd rather use a stylus and the REAL web then have to wait for sites to roll out iPhone compatible versions.
Wow.... I have to admit the N900 is shaping up way better than I had anticipated, but I think we still have to wait and see wether the app offer and Maemo ecosystem in general is worth the migration from more mature, functional and better looking platforms ( Pre , Hero , Iphone ). To me waiting for a Snapdragon - Tegra Android HTC phone ( HTC Dragon ? ) is a way safer bet than going for this device. This is still a huge leap forward for Nokia and eons ahead of any s60 offering. Seriously though, Ballmer came out clean on Microsoft f'ing it up with the delayed release of Winmo 7, I can't see why Nokia won't admit s60 is just way behind the current competition and completely ditch it.
Maemo's been around for a while, check out the current app selection.
As for this versus other mobiles, the N900 is more of a laptop replacement. If you want to use the web w/o sacrifices and FTP to your web server and make some changes to your code then upload it back all while VNCing to your work computer then the N900 is for you.
Truth is the N900 will be more of a niche market, but it will be my niche. ;)
you realize maemo has been around longer than any of those right?
the nokia 770 was released on may 25, 2005
oh and sorry for double post but with real web youll actually need less apps. facebook? sure its got an app on maemo but you can use the full site right on the device, same for twitter, and any other web based services.
Excuse me, did you just describe the Pre as a "mature" platform? That deserves a hearty lol. I don't think you know what that word means. The Pre has been out for what, like four months now? Maemo has been around for four years. *That* is mature. Oh, and webOS still has no support for real applications, just Javascript enabled web pages masquerading as apps (and still no indication that will ever change). Educate thyself, please.
WOW that is one hell of a browser the N900 packs
I can't wait till this phone comes out and play with it I think it might just replace my iPhone 2g :)
You're not alone ;)
This phone is looking better everyday. I hope Nokia continues on this same path and creates some awesome new phones that can compete with every other smartphone out there. The Nokia n900 is already on my list to buy and if it works with t-mobile then thats fine with me. Hopefully it works with AT&T as well as this phone needs to get into the hands of as many consumers as possible. That won't happen if it only comes to t-mobile or if it only works on t-mobiles network. It would be nice if Nokia started making dual CDMA and GSM phones so that Sprint and Verizon users could use the phones as well. It certainly would increase their sales whether they were subsidized or not. Personally I think $600 is an exceptional price for a great MID phone like this.
Nokia should have added phone functionality to their Nxxx tablet series a long time ago.
Fennec Browser beta 4 just released for N900
It uses the DESKTOP FIREFOX plugins...
iphone sucks ass....
"There looks to be some lag between the keyboard and text box..."
It doesn't even run the final firmware...I can't even imagine how it would run after a few firmware upgrades.
In fact this comment of "some lag between the keyboard and text box" is down to the usual idiocy of engadget writers. Anyone with even the weakest of observation skills will notice that in actual fact, the sound is out of sync on the video. You can tell when he removes the stylus - the sound of it removing is about one second before you see him remove it.
The reality is that there's no lag at all!
also... the guy making the video should learn how to use the Maemo 5 browser properly before doing a demo :-)
this guy should pull out the pointer on the n900. the pointer is like a mouse. that is how you highlight an item
