Recent iPhone 3GS shipments block jailbreaking, jailbreakers still in business
Well, if you can't beat 'em, then just keep 'em busy. That seems to be the thinking at Apple these days at least, which has ratcheted up its fight with the iPhone jailbreaking community once again by updating the bootrom on iPhone 3GS units that started shipping in the past week. That was apparently first discovered by Mathieulh and later verified by iPhone Dev Team member "Muscle Nerd," who confirmed that the update (iBoot-359.3.2) renders the iPhone 3GS "impossible" to jailbreak for the time being. Of course, that time could well end up being fairly short, but if you just have to jailbreak a 3GS right now, you'll probably want to try to track down some old stock or snap up a refurbished unit.

@ Mr.Blue
nope no jailbreak here. I was just looking for reviews the day after it came out and that site came up in a google search.
Wow jailbreak to use on inferior 3g tmobil in USA deedeedeee!
Plus get stuck with $200 ETF 30 day minimum billing plus $199 plus activation.
jailbreak voids warranty. So if iPhone craps out in 1 month u would ve forced to pay full rate fir a new iPhone 3gs $600.
Exactly not looking too good to jailbrk I only jailbreak my iPhones after 1 year warranty expeires.
A: At least T-Mo's 3G actually works
B: A lot of people jailbreak for other purposes... like running apps that have been denied from the App Store.
or, if you have a problem with your phone you can restore it before sending it in and save yourself all your other excuses
Wait What???
Jailbreaking isn't the same as unlocking, kid.
"Jailbreaking is distinct from unlocking, which is the process by which a mobile device is made compatible with telephone networks with which it was not specifically licensed to be used. Jailbreaking is a process that allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to run unofficial code on their devices bypassing Apple's official distribution mechanism, the App Store. Once jailbroken, iPhone users are able to download many applications previously unavailable through the App Store via unofficial installers such as Cydia and Icy."
obvious troll is obvious.
by the way, you should think about changing your screen name to "assumption"...cuz i've yet to read any "truth" in anything you've posted so far
Sounds like an apple fanboy don't he????
More importantly, you only get edge on tmo, they use a unique 3g frequency. You're an idiot; also, you sound like you're 12.

FYI, the jailbreak leaves files on the device that are NOT wiped during a restore. Apple can tell if you've jailbroken if they want to...
i've personally sent apple back 2 jailbroken iphones that i restored beforehand. never had a problem with either of them.

Fabulous, doesn't change anything I said...
nope...thanks 4 the heads up though!
And somehow you can use the iPhone 3G/3Gs on TMUS 3G network?
so cute that they keep trying to block people from jailbreaking... I would like to see a comparison of how long it takes for them to create these countermeasures vs the couple of weeks it usual takes to defeat them.
I guess they have to reassure app developers that they are trying to prevent piracy somehow though.
Why don't you just make your phone not suck so people don't want to jailbreak it, Apple? When my contract is up, my iPhone is gone and I'm never touching one again.
Nobody cares.
The iPhone doesn't suck. It doesn't do 100% of the things 100% of people want which is pretty much impossible but its the best out there by far.
I wonder how many people will jump ship once jailbreaking becomes impossible or difficult for the end user to accomplish. I will. Thinking about android as my next phone anyway. I shouldn't need to rely on others just to run some software that apple's bottom line doesn't agree with. Not to mention I dislike being treated like a child.
I was thinking the same thing. My contract is up in 1 year. If I can't upgrade and jailbreak, I'll be looking for another platform
Maybe it would be more productive if instead of trying to keep people from modding your OS, you actually worked on your OS. Seriously, people jailbreak for greater functionality. See what kind of functionality they're trying to add, and add it yourself, Apple.
Apple blocked the 24kpwn exploit, so what about the 0x2000 exploit ? http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Usb_control_msg%280x21%2C_2%29_Exploit
dudes i myself dont have an iPhone or an iPod touch i haven an andoid phone and a zune but i still feel for u guys. I dont think its fair for apple to pull that crap just to make an extra buck.
I own 4 iPhones .
2 iPhone 3g n 2 iPhone 3gs.
Both iPhone 3g are outta warranty n jailbroken.
I only pay $10 a month for iPhone Line 1 n 2.
I see no benefit to jailbreak iPhone 3gs under warranty u asking for trouble.
4 iPhones- ur soooo kewl!! I wanna b liek u bro.
I see no benefit in owning 4 iPhones. I want my rent at the end of the month.
I WAS going to get a 3GS. My 2G is done and I was waiting for Dev Team to announce the latest jailbreak, then i was goign to upgrade to a 3GS. Now i to wait, again.
I just purchased a 3GS last night from a retail store. Updated to 3.1.2 and jailbroken using Geohot's solution (which is a 700k download, btw). You have time if you don't order via mail...
Guessing they may also be getting pressure from devs as apps are being pirated. Just a thought. I just use my phone the way it came, no jailbreak for me.
I wouldn't jailbreak if I could do the following 3 things on my iPhone.
1) Reskin my desktop with a look I like. There is no reason why I can't modify my icons and desktop to something besides the bland out of the box look.
2) Run applications in the background. I like backgrounder. I use it all the time, when I am listening to an internet radio stream or Sirius XM, I sometimes like to check my email while the music is playing. Sure Apple says my battery life might go down if I am multitasking, but who cares, its my battery let me decide if I want to run it down or not.
3) Let me watch my Slingbox on the 3G Network. To do this I must jailbreak and use 3G Unrestrictor. I don't watch my Slingbox much, but sometimes I want to just check the scores or see something like the news. I have no plans of watching TV on my phone for long periods of time. I pay for my internet service on my iPhone, let me decide how I use it.
If apple addressed those 3 things I would not even want to jailbreak my phone.
Apple, you are really starting to piss me off. It was bad enough going three weeks without a jailbreak, and now you're trying to block it permanently? If it ever comes to the point where I'm not allowed to jailbreak, I'm jumping ship.
I know Apple could care less about losing one customer because there are legions of people willing to buy into the hype, but it's a shame (to me at least) knowing that the phone is capable of so much more.
I jailbreak my phone for Winterboard. I got it cause it allows you to have a custom background on the main screen, remove the text below the icons and get rid of the ugly dock.
Why do most people assume that jailbreak = piracy? It really doesn't. My 3GS is jailbroken but I have not one pirated app. I did it for functionality as most people do. As with everything pirates are the minority.
Because Apple is probably seeing a lot of piracy and getting flack for it. That being said, it's not as if Apple is the only one who can lockdown the app. The developer themselves can lock down an app tight enough where just running crackulous is not enough. I don't think the devs should HAVE to go through this extra work but it can be done.
Funny now new bootrom making JB'ing impossible == Apple blocking JB'ing. Perhaps the new bootrom just changed something fundamental?
apple should offer stuff the the jailbreak has
One of the reasons people jailbreak is because out of the 75,000 apps (and counting .sacarsm) only 20 are useful.
Most of the very useful apps like phone management apps can be installed only through Cydia/Icy/Rock.
This is just one of all the other reasons... so until Apple let us do whatever we wanna do with our phones, people will continue to jailbreak.
Glad I got my 3gs a month ago :)
@ laxfan0930
Yes, I could have read the reviews but what I read and what I actually saw in the app didn't match up for me. If I would have bought it based on the reviews and I would have been pissed for wasting $100. (apple doesn't do refunds, right?) And yes, I would have bought the app since I was planning to sell my stand-alone TomTom unit to cover the cost.
Glad to see nobody mentioning that Apple doubly fixed an exploit bug at the same time....darn!
I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned blackrain is tethered jailbreak. Isn't that a pain in the arse? What about if you have to hard boot your phone while you are out and about. You have a useless phone into you can get back to your pc, not just any pc.
