Altec Lansing FX3021 Expressionist Plus reviewed, deemed good value
Speakers might be among the worst hardware to assess online. What do 36 watts of power output and a 40Hz to 20kHz response range tell you about the actual audio quality? A kindly soul over at Macworld has tried to clear that up for us with a review of Altec Lansing's prettified Expressionist Plus 2.1 setup. The tiltable satellites score design points for their looks, though that all-important sound output was deemed only middle of the road. Real bass response begins at somewhere around 70Hz and the midrange is, well, middling, though treble definition is considered rich and well detailed. The reviewer also notes that while the design is attractive, the positioning of the power button and extra audio input on the subwoofer makes for awkward day-to-day use. On the whole, with online prices in the vicinity of $75, this looks like a decent value, so hit up the full review if your interest has been piqued.

Can't wait to see the "audiophile" comments on these.
Anything that looks like that, (and is as small as that is,) couldn't satisfy a child's playroom. This costs MORE than my 5.1ch Logitech, and has half the quality/output.
No surprise the review is from MacWorld, where design is always over function.
Happy now?
@ ScrapMaker: I wouldn't be totally surprised if your speakers sound better than these (how would you know anyways if you haven't heard these?), but the 5.1 Logitech setups that I'm aware of are far from audiophile grade sound equipment. I've heard them. Hell, I have a $110 Logitech Z-2300 2.1 setup and they're still far from audiophile level.
@ScrapMaker: I don't know, I think they look like shit, and I'm a Mac user. I'm also a Windows user and a Linux user, so maybe I'm not completely brainwashed....
Yuck.
Nasty renders too.
if they add a lava lamp on the baking-soda volcano shaped bass, I would buy it.
I'm always skeptical of uber designed audio systems.
Or save yourself some hassle and buy a decent amp and a decent pair of floorstanders. I recomment the Cambridge Audio A1 (£70), and any speakers over around £100 should be fine.
Sure, it's a bit more expensive but it will look and sound much better. And its the sort of thing you only need to buy once per lifetime.
aahhh the buy once per lifetime. That's why im still running my Altec A7 theater speakers that are now over 40 years old and still sound great =D
I'm jealous of how cheap good electronics are in the UK ;). That same Cambridge Integrated would run around $300 here in the US! I have a vintage set-up for my computer: Harman Kardon Citation 12 amp running some Marantz Imperial 6s, total cost $200.
Unfortunately most people don't have enough room for a real stereo anymore, or, they just don't care about the quality of the sound.
Bookshelf: I'm jealous! I'm dreaming of some Altec VOTTs (when Altecs were really Altecs, not the rebranded BPC in the article above), but I might satisfy myself by building some clones...
makes the grade for a dorm room smaller than my kitchen? the subwoofer looks like the mountain from "close encounters'
It looks like a centrifuge.
It looks like a lampshade with her two kids in tow.
Do not buy these speakers, they have horrible hissing. Even when there's not audio source connected, there's loud hissing. I tried it in different places in my house, same hiss. The hiss is at the same level whether volume is up or all the way down. I bought them on Amazon. I returned them figuring that maybe I got a defective pair. They sent a replacement, same HISS. Had to return the speakers a second time. These things are garbage!
Hey look a black Volcano with...speakers?
