Hitachi exhibits 10-inch glasses-free 3D display
Hitachi's face-recognizing, power-saving plasma may have been the outfit's show-stopper at CEATEC, but this little bugger here showed some pretty fantastic potential as well. The 10-inch 3D display, more formally known as the Full Parallax 3D TV, one-upped most every other 3D display at the show thanks to its ability to showcase dimensions sans any glasses. Unfortunately, the native resolution is just 640 x 480, and yes, it really is just 10-inches in size. In due time, the outfit hopes to scale up to screen sizes that may actually be appealing to end users by utilizing multiple projectors (each of which with a 800 x 600 resolution), though a 4K x 2K 3D display (of the glasses-free variety) is still probably a couple of trade shows out. 3D will not really take off until people can ditch the glasses. I don't have a huge issue with good quality glasses but I think most people do.

It sounds like we're, what, six years from an affordable glasses-free 3D HDTV?
Might as well get your glasses and Samsung 2233rz now, folks. 3D games are already here and I don't want to wait YEARS when I only have to put up with glasses TODAY!
I'll happily ditch the glasses when a reasonable alternative is available.
I think the glasses wouldn't be a barrier if they were cheap and not tethered to the monitor, unlike the 3D gaming glasses I've seen. But this would be even better.
But there's the image quality problem (at least in the 3D I've seen). Whenever I see 3D movies or 3D gaming monitors, there's always a slight ghost image. If we spent all this time and money to get to 240Hz 1080p LED-bright images, I don't know why we'd take 5 steps backwards in terms of image quality just so we could see a slightly 3D image.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't non-glasses 3D displays just be that the view would change based on where you were next to the screen? Objects would not really comes towards you, but would move around side to side and up and down like a real 3D environment would if you walked up to the screen.
I would love a glasses-free 3D screen where objects can "move" in and out, but that doesn't really sound possible to me. Would love if this were not the case though.
Check out the auto-stereoscopic display developed by Ken Perlin's team at the NYU Media Research Lab at the beginning of the decade. It's a single-user solution, but it does exactly what you think is impossible by tracking your eyes and using an liquid crystal shutter screen in front of the display to channel distinct images to each eye. That about nine years ago now, so it's at least feasible that we'd be seeing a commercialized single-user glasses-free stereoscopic display. The perspective shift you described would be single-user as well, a la Jonny Lee's Wiimote solution. But then, I wouldn't bet my investment funds on a single-user system.
More promising than that sort of classic stereoscopy are voxel-based displays, which will be the perfect multi-user 3D displays when they can be manufactured less expensively, and content can be produced for them.
Ive witness a glasses- free 3D screen at Nvision 08, the screen was like a 24 inch moniter. Object do pop out at you but go away when it cuts below the screen..no really projection but workds like a holographic image..its a optical illustion. You have to be sitting direction ahead of the screen..though it looks fantastic. They demoed a slot machine with coins flying in your face. A lego car being built with pieces flying into the screen..they said doctor can look at 3D cat scans in realtime...
Put it on a very tiny laptop.
They should make a 3D display using phased array optics.

No. They don't when each eye gets at least 60fps.
That's why NV requires 120hz for 3D Vision. They'd sell millions more of their glasses if they allowed it on 60hz screens, but they'd single handedly cause 3D gaming to fail.
But you won't be able to view the screen from an angle right?

I'm not going to hold my breath. I saw a 14" 3D monitor (no glasses) at CeBit 7 years ago.

None of this is remotely new.
We've had glasses-free 3D for YEARS.
And we've had 3D with glasses for YEARS.
It's nothing new at all, it's just the same hype as 50, 20, and 10 years ago.
Isn't this the same technology Philips used?
I've seen that in action on a 40" or something IRL, not all that impressive.. how is this different?
Must be a different technology, but sounds the same.
Nintendo should put tiny versions on the next DS. Games could play in 3D, and since you hold the screen roughly the same place in front of your eyes, angle/distance shouldn't be a problem. Put 2 cameras on the back side, and let the kiddies take/share 3D photos. It would take the world by storm.
