Nokia's 5230 inches closer to release, gets spied along the way
Nokia's 5230 isn't apt to blow any minds with the likes of the HD2, Droid and XPERIA X3 on the horizon, but for those perfectly content with a touchscreen-based Symbian S60 5th Edition handset, this one sure looks purty. After dipping its toes in the FCC's expansive database just last month, a crop of new in the wild shots have surfaced to show off its 3.2-inch display (640 x 360), 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR module and variety of colorful backs. Hit the read link for more pixels if you're so inclined, and feel free to take the "January 2010" release date in with a dose of NaCl.

cheaper than 5530?
cheaper yes but no wifi, and it put on a few pounds.
yeah for now i'm all for screwing android. it might amount to something eventually, but it's not much of a big deal for now.
looking forward to maemo, but still like the stability of s60. it's a pity that there aren't many programmers working on it, but that's nokia's own fault for keeping such tight security
OH MY GOD who wants one of these. the only nokias i would even consider would be the n95 because of the widgets and the n900 because of maimo. I am not an anti nokia person or anything. I just would wish that they could differentiate their os from symbian and use maimo. Nokia needs to push maimo more like morotola is pushing android.
Or they could just suck it up, write off \Symbian, and use Android. Like everyone wants them to.
PS: it's Maemo.
w... widgets? and why the N95 in particular?
you have no idea of what you're talking about right? (also, screw android)
M-A-E-M-O

Maemo was his nam-o
@Tik
YES YES YES!
Once again we have here another feature rich better specs than the iPhone. But will ut kill it.
That's the real quetion.
UT?
UT? Unreal Tournament? Specs are good, but not that good.
Utah? Why would the peaceful state of Utah kill the iPhone?
Damn.
My first thought was "A double touch screen clamshell design!".
But this is meh.
Hehe I thought that too.
I guess you haven't seen Nokia 5800XM then. This is the same body with slightly lower specs.
5800XM works like a charm and is a better "phone" than most other iDevices.
I hope Engadget does something soon against this Chinese spammers, man...
Is the comment system screwed up, or did you know that the spammer was coming?
Very nice resolution for a 3.2 screen. 16:9 640x360, better than that 3.5 screen with 3:2 480x320...
At least it's screen is higher res.
I can't even imagine how massive the release from 5230 inches would be. enough to engulf nations, most likely.
ROTFL!
"Nokia 5230" is a great mass-market touchscreen device, with that low price tag considering its feature pack.
By the way, with 5230 Nokia is clearly revealing their long term OS roadmap:
- Proprietary S30&S40 will be used in entry level&low-end devices
- Open source Symbian will be used in high-end mid-end devices
- Open source Maemo will be used in high-end devices
Expect more mid-end devices like 5230 with Symbian in the future.
Forgot to add - while it's competing directly with "Samsung S5230 Star", naming scheme doesn't seem to be a coincidence to me :)
Its cameras its biggest let down only 2MP, also
actually the biggest let down is the lack of wifi. camera might be 2mp but still its there.
well it's a budget model, what did you expect ;)
Why are all these phones being produced with the same small 3.2" screen & a cheap 2 megapixel camera? The smartphone market is looking more & more like the netbook market. Everyone is using the same old hardware without one thought of innovation. Don't they realize that if they're really serious about selling in this market they need to belly up to the bar & offer something different? If all these phones weren't labeled you couldn't pick out what company made which phone.
"Why are all these phones being produced with the same small 3.2" screen & a cheap 2 megapixel camera?"
I think the price tag would speak for itself and answer your question: " Wake up! This is not a flagship phone! "
This is just a basic smartphone with a featurephone price tag, designed to bring touchscreen experience to masses (world-wide, not US-wide)
That 3.2 inch Screen at 640 x 360 is higher resolution than a lot of devices, most touch screen 3.2inch devices are still coming out with 320x240, 480x272, 480x320!
thats alot of inches
Nokia, welcome to 2007. How do you think you can escape your losses with a handset like this? HTC Kaiser was released over two years ago with better specs than this one.
@ Gungel
I also have an AT&T Tilt/HTC TyTN II, and the 5800 is superior in almost everything, especially battery life. And the screen has more than twice the amount of pixels as my TyTN II. The Nokia 5230 is basically a cheaper 5800 without wifi and a lower resolution camera sensor (2 MP vs 3.2 MP)
This should be good if it launches and retails for less than $200. I mean... c'mon. The 5800 is already below $300 and the 5530 below $250.
And I like the fact that all of Nokia's touchscreen phones are coming out with a 3.5 mm slot.
wow, i just got bashed by nokia fanboys

Why doesn't Nokia adopt Android or something. s60 imo, is too slow and outdated. After owning a iPhone and now a Pre, I couldn't do another Nokia handset. I love Nokia build quality, it's just the OS (for me).
