Gemei's 4.3-inch HD8800 PMP does 1080p out, other cool things for $122
It's been a hot minute since we've seen a compelling new media player from the labs of Gemei, but the HD8800 ain't half bad. Offering up a 4.3-inch display with an 800 x 480 resolution, this touchscreen-based PMP packs 8GB of internal memory, a battery good for five hours of movie playback (or ten hours with audio), USB 2.0 connectivity, 3.5 millimeter headphone jack and support for more formats than you'll ever use. Oh, and then there's that handy video out feature, which can supposedly shoot out content at up to 1080p via HDMI. It's yours right now for a buck-twenty-two, but only heaven knows if that "JESSICA" wallpaper is changeable.[Via PMP Today]

Ooo 1080 out eh? Looks like the Zune HD has some fierce competition coming it's way.
Also cocks.
needs better battery life :/
You get what you pay for! I'm quite confident this $120 device will be as crappy as any other Chinese fakes/replicas. Low cost products with bad audio quality as well as video.
@eddie
your comment made for a good laugh? this thing doesnt come close to the ZUNE HD. sure 1080p out, but from a pathetically small 8gb, yeah ok. i can name a whole list of better features from the ZUNE that would kill this thing.
and on high quality hardware like the Zune HD for only $100 more you can play all formats as long as you convert them to the wmv codec...
@imdaillest
Pretty much. I just wanted to parody the idiots who say "Also, first" after their comments. But there's no way anyone could take this thing seriously. I mean you can fit what, 2 movies on that thing? Might as well just buy the blu-ray discs. At least then people won't be asking why you brought the movies in your sister Jessica's pmp.
@ridgecity
Thats like saying 'you can have any colour as long as it is black'
I know. I rather have colors than 2 shades of black.
@Daniel How many of these pmp have you tried? Or are you just making up stuff out of your ass?
Also, Zune doesn't do HD output unless you buy a $80 dock that doesn't come with it.
Are you guys actually fighting over a cheesy electronic device? Geeez!
1080p out but only 8GB to store that 1080p video... lame....
Lol, I know right. It's an oxymoron, 1080p out, but no room to put 1080p videos.
Takes "up to 32GB TF" which I believe = TransFlash = Micro SD
Bumping the memory up to 16 or 24GB is easy with the bit of spare cash you have left over from the fact it only costs $122.
And at some point 40GB (or maybe more) should be possible
Android would have been cool.
Not trying to be a buzz kill, but why the heck would you need 1080p on a 4.3 inch screen?! That's ridiculous. You're not going to see the difference from even 720p on that small a screen size.
It's 1080p out. So that you can take it with you and plug it up to a bigger source.
It's 1080p out the HDMI port. Pay attention. It's only one little paragraph to read. :)
thats quite good compare to the price tag of $120, sumtimes people just demand too much
Products like this make me wonder, How much does an average American Company makes when it sells its PMP/Audio Player(iPod Touch, ZuneHD, etc) ?
While its true that a lot of the cost contributes to the services, software, research, UI, support, etc. But, I can see that there is a hefty amount of profit to be made from this market. Its reasonable that Microsoft stuck to its guns with the Zune and didn't give up.
Hats off to the Murph Man - 7 good articles in quick succession on a Saturday night....
He deserves a medal made from recycled circuit boards if you ask me!
For $25, I know a Jessica that puts out more than just 1080p.
I am so sorry. I had to say it. I just had to. Wait. Wait a second - I just checked. I just checked everywhere, and I don't even feel bad about it.
Hey...it's only $120! ...seems like simply a GREAT value, to me.
Hey, PMPin' ain't easy.
Spambot
Crap, sorry people, I was trying to say that the post above my last one was a spam bot, just ignore my above post.
I for one would love to get my hands on this thing but I can't even find a website for this company. What modern tech company doesn't even have a website nowadays?! The crappy mom and pop diner up the street from me has a website.
agreed, we need some ip address blocking on the spam bots
Ok, to put to rest and enlighten you fan boys of popular products that still think a name means the internals are worth a pissing well....
ipod and Zune will fail horribly on sound chips. The best thing going right now in the Chinese market is Wolfson audio decoder chips. I have had 2 devices with those chips and pitted them against the top brands aforementioned and shamed them horribly. You can say all you want about audiophiles and how the difference can't be heard. I beg you to put a device with a Wolfson chip against an ipod or zune. I dare you even. There isn't an ear in the world that won't hear the difference. YES, it's that drastically noticable.
I'm not saying this device in the article has that chip. It may not, and that doesn't matter. I'm advocating the quality-for-price ratio of these Chinese players. Ok, so the first device I had, a Nationite S:flo (rebranded Teclast T-50) had the shittiest firmware I've ever used. Just horrible. But the sound was AMAZING. Second device I had was a Samsung P2, which got dropped once and now it's got a short so bad it won't turn on anymore. Bummer, because I loved that thing. BUT, once again, that Wolfson audio chip ROOOOCKED!
Now there is a Nationite S:flo v2 coming this month (if not already out) that is muy updated, and this device has 2, TWO, 1+1=2 Wolfson audio chips. One for each channel. BAM! The sound will be ethereal. It's also the newest Wolfson chip as well, which from what I heard will dominate.
So maybe the Wolfson won't beat out the likes of Creative. After all, they own the sound business. Frankly I dont' know anyone that owns a creative player, so I couldn't test it.
What I'm saying is that you can read all the hype you want, and read all the negative engadget articles you want slamming Chinese mp3/mp4 players, but I have owned one, and I can tell you from experience and passion that yes, the internal memory is shameful when there's an option for 1080 output, but shop around and pick up a cheap one with the Wolfson chips for your mp3's. It's like listening to your favorite music for the first time. In-freakin-credible. So you do have to shop around and compare. And for god sakes, read user reviews! Make yourself aware of the prominent issues with players of any kind, or products of any kind for that matter, so that you know what you're getting into. All electronics have a fail rate. Deal with it or work around it. My player(s) broke and yea, I was pissed, but I only paid $100 for each, months apart. It's been worth that at least for the pleasure my ears have received and the experience and knowledge that a cheap Chinese mp3 player can crush the biggest names in the biz without even flexing.
there will be an S:flo v2 in my hands in the next month or so and a 16gb microSD to max it out. (where the hell is 32gb? Most devices say that they support 32gb, but there's no such thing. Did I miss a memo?)
Lol. Are you trying to appeal to reader on engadget with logic? You must not know this place well. Only inane flame baiting is acceptable here.
"a battery good for five hours of movie playback (or ten hours with audio)"
Being kinda picky here, but I think that should read "(or ten hours of audio)"... unless it really does double battery life when you play movies with audio. xD

Just ordered one. If it sucks, at least it was a cheap mistake.
A monster cable HDMI is like half the price of this player
