Apple reports fiscal Q4 earnings: $1.67b profit, Mac sales way up, iPod sales down, 'great new products' for 2010
Stevie J himself is quoted as saying that Apple is "thrilled to have sold more Macs and iPhones than in any previous quarter," and in case you haven't noticed, the holiday quarter hasn't even been completed yet. Oh, and if you were looking for bread crumbs as for what's on deck, chew on this: "We've got a very strong lineup for the holiday season and some really great new products in the pipeline for 2010." Great new products, you say? Would one of them happen to include some sort of, say, tablet PC?
Catch our updates after the break...
Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO, just hopped on the line, and he's obviously thrilled with the "record-breaking" quarter, and judging by after-hours stock movement, we'd say Wall Street concurs. Speaking on Mac sales, this quarter's sales broke the prior quarterly record by over 400,000 machines, with portable sales growing some 35 percent and representing 74 percent of all Macs moved. He also informed us of a 42 percent uptick (year-over-year) in Asia-Pacific, not to mention a 12 percent increase in US education Mac sales (which marked the highest ever in this category).
Speaking on the iPod topic, he noted that 50 percent of all buyers are snagging their first iPod, and iPod touch sales are up an astounding 100 percent as it rides the wave of popularity that is the App Store. Peter also commented that Apple's share of the MP3 player remains at around 70 percent, and the 7.4 million iPhones sold represented a company record for the quarter. iPhone sell-through was pegged at 38 percent, and he noted that iPhone sales would begin in China "later this month." Confirming news we already knew, he said that carrier relationships would expand in "the UK and Canada," and he said hopes were high to get the handset to South Korea in the near future.
Moving on, he stated that Apple's retail stores also had a record quarter (noticing a trend?), with about half of all Mac buyers in stores being first-time Mac owners. For the entire year, Apple recorded 12 percent growth in revenue and 18 percent growth in net income, all during what most would say was the worst recession since bread was sold in unsliced fashion.
Mr. Oppenheimer just opened the floor to questions... and most everything is pretty low-key (read: uninteresting). He's explaining that demand for the iPhone has led to low stock in quite a few markets, and he's calling this quarter a "blowout" one for Mac portables. We're told that Snow Leopard upgrades have basically "doubled" compared to the amount of folks that upgraded to Leopard during the same five-week-after-launch period, though box shipments are expected to slow as the amount of loyalists living without 10.6 dwindles. When questioned about the benefits (for Apple) of having exclusive iPhone relationships, Tim Cook (COO) noted that you can "generally have a level of innovation" that you can't have with a multi-carrier arrangement. Also, he mentioned that an "exclusive carrier may be willing to invest more," though Apple has "found no lack of companies wanting to sell iPhones."
And that's it! Sadly, none of those with a spot to ask a question bothered to really press Apple about the "new products" quote, though we have to say all that talk about channel inventory and corporate adoption rates was downright thrilling. Still, when Steve comes out and makes a mention like that, you know he means business. Or, at least we hope so.

Mac sales are up because PPC macs can't upgrade to snow leper. boohoo.
Why don't you just do us all a favor and hook yourself up to an apple powerbrick.
Have any of you guys ever thought about the Zune HD?
Many consumers that would have bought the iPod Touch, are now, buying the Zune HD/non-Apple PMP's.
...and they are returning the HD after a week of using it and going back to the Apple store for their Touch.
Milo, if you'd read through the whole article, you would have seen that sales of the iPod touch (the iPod that Zune HD is most similar to) are UP by 100%.
this probably has nothing to do with the iphone, everyone knows the iphone is the worst cell phone anyone has ever seen!!!
GO ANDROID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:\ *sarcasm*
sadly people on this site still don't believe the iphone #1
......the proof is in the pudding there is too much iphone hate.
by the way for the people that were wondering why ipod sales have declined
the reason ipod sales are slowing is because:
1) the product(ipod) is coming to the end of its life cycle.
2) iphone has taken a huge number of customers
3) a lot of people already have them
4)global economic conditions
5)competition
Competition? Hmm.. I can't think of comparable players to iPods. The closest competition are the SanDisk players in terms of popularity but I believe SanDisk targets a different demographic, which is fine and all.
It's good to see that the economy is coming around a bit. For that reason I commend Apple.
@Mark
All companies steal from each other - just because system restore showed up in Windows first means that OS X is a straight up copy - but what is copying is one company taking a product and reverse engineering it so they can build one just like it. So if you want to go down that road - travel back to 1983 and tell me Windows hasnt been playing catchup with Mac ever since - starting with using a GUI...then they stole the trash can...
Unfortunately Gates BRILLIANTLY [no sarcasm] made his OS open to anyone willing to pay a licensing fee and became the person we know today. Jobs and Apple kept everything closed - and while that may look like a HUGE mistake back then - may actually be paying off today. This is due to the Apple eco-system and all hardware and software being made by one company DESIGNED to work together. Plus you cant argue that the products they design are simply gorgeous.
And if buying an iPhone is like buying a PocketPC circa 2002, then logic dictates that a PocketPC circa 2002 is like buying an iPaq, which is like buying a Palm Pilot, which is like buying a Newton. In the end - they evolved from an Apple product.
Bottom line comment.
Apple had an insane quarter. Sales record shattering. Has not felt effects of recession.
So what dies tell us. IPhone is only depression proof smartphone
Only people that hate apple are not the average consumers.
The bloggers applehaters are the only ones that are wrong.
Truth hurts wm bb nokia android lg fanboys.
What have we learned here today Apple/ iPhone haters,??
Huh. Exactly y'all have been silence.
So what u gonna do now Jump on the android or pre train in hope of sholes dethroning iPhone. Lol!! Accept defeat muthachucka.
is that the applie store in sydney, australia?
k, honestly some people are dicks. apple, mac, ipod, microsoft, zune, linux, who cares.
im glad mac sales are going up because that means competition, wich means other computers will improve. im just sick of people fighting over it, computers are computers, if you want to pay more you can, if you think ones better its an opinion. there is no reason to argue over bullshit like what computer is better.
>> Insert joke about welcoming fruit overlords
I'm curious as to know what portion of their proffits are from the iTunes and app stores. Any ideas?
Why is it a surprise when they use the cheapest components in their products yet charge premiums when sold? Cheap manufacturing costs will yield profits everytime.

"Why is it a surprise when they use the cheapest components in their products yet charge premiums when sold? Cheap manufacturing costs will yield profits everytime."
Because what you say is false, that's why. And because you're just some bitter MS fanboy and are running your mouth off without knowing what you're talking about. Apple builds very high quality products. You want to see a few reason's why consumers chose to buy Macs instead of PCs, even through the worst recession in 80 years? A few reasons why:

Holy shit Mark just replied to Detox (*cough*Paul*cough*). Better get ready for war!
impressive numbers for a recession..i cuddle with my apple stock every night..its been pretty good to me over the years..lol
iDont understand why people continue to buy the same products, iSheep.
what I don't understand is why people keep buying the garbage that Microsoft produces Windows release after Windows release. I've been using Windows for 15+ years but when I realized there was a real alternative to using that bag of problems called Windows I threw away my PC and got me a Mac instead. 3 years later now and I couldn't be happier.
Warren = owning Mark. Mark that comment you made was pretty atrocious, sorry, but you COMPLETELY missed your mark (no pun intended).
Frankly, amazing results given the state of the global economy and impending release of Windows 7. I had been expecting Windows 7 to stem the tide of switchers but I'm changing my mind on this now if people were still prepared to buy an overpriced Mac with Microsoft's new OS about to hit the streets. Perhaps this situation has nothing to do with the platform itself but rather people's perceived appreciation of the hardware itself and that buyers aren't very impressed with what is coming out of the non-Apple PC manufacturers at the moment.
Anyone want to bet against another record quarter after the upcoming Christmas period?
That store is beautiful.
I agree with you in all your points except on the MacBook Air. That is not a netbook and never will be. The MacBook Air belongs in the category of ultraportables which is diametrically opposite that of netbooks.
The demographic for ultraportables tends to be business users who already have a desktop computer and need a second, portable, computer; light enough and thin enough to throw inside their briefcases. Here is a list of some ultraportables:

Does anyone else see the increase of Mac products has to do with the fact that most folks who buy mac products are generally affluent and therefore can upgrade their technology more often than the middle class?
@Jose: Funny my Zen Stone is still working after years of use, my Treo smartphone is going on 3 years old and it's playing MP3s just fine and my Garmin Nuvi is still playing MP3s through my car speakers and it's over 2 years old. (It also stays out in the cold and hot car all the time.) Heck my old cassette Sony Walkman still works to this day - Dolby B and all.
I'm glad you're willing to accept shelling out and annualized $125/yr for an MP3 player but I have to say, no way Jose - that's not a quality level that I'll accept. Although I do see that you aren't alone in being willing to shell out big bucks to Apple, no matter how long the product lasts or how much less competitors cost. As long as it has a good interface.
"Snow Leper"
Brilliant!
People barely pay attention to obvious details. "Moved" and "sold" are not the same terms. Also note the increase in products going to Asia. People in America don't have money to buy a mac. This has nothing to do with good products or mac being better than pc or anything to do with the iphone. It's pure and simple there are more foreign shops buying these things to sell on ebay or in shops. Remember the PS3 fiasco? It looked like PS3 was outselling everyone but they were actually just being bought up by everyone in Asia to resell on ebay.
Remember there is a whole world out there. It's not just America and America has no money for macbooks. The iPhone is the only reason Apple's sales are staying alive in America. The reason for that is that the iPhone is the only phone trying to not suck. That and people are fickle and dumb. People buy them without a single clue how to use it. One lady paid me to help her download apps. Obviously the iPhone is not simple enough for the average person.
