Barnes & Noble 'Nook' e-reader with color touchscreen out Tuesday for $259, says WSJ (update: Best Buy connection?)
Looks like the cat's out of the bag. The Wall Street Journal's had a glimpse at what it says is an upcoming ad for Barnes & Noble's impending announcement, which just so happens to be a e-book reader with color touch screen (sound familiar?) dubbed the Nook. According to the article, it'll be out Tuesday, retail for $259, and will let users "lend e-books to friends." Very interesting, indeed -- so who's excited for tomorrow?
Update: We can't say with 100 percent assurance, but a reliable source of ours claims that Barnes & Noble will be partnering with Best Buy for sales of the device, and units will actually be available this Thursday. That last bit sounds daring at best, as it's Windows 7 launch day, but you never know what folks will get up to these days. Stay tuned!

I just hope it isn't a fingerprint magnet.
I would say battery life is more important.
CAN I GET IT WITH ANDROID?!?!?!#!#!!?%
Finally I can read comic books in color! Reading in grayscale is horrible for some.
@nin: I presume its not a color eReader. For the battery life to be reasonable, the lower LCD display is probably off most of the time. More likely its just there to display an onscreen keyboard, or a number pad to select the page you want, or ... e.g. a variety of control buttons for the touch area, not to display content on.
But I could be wrong...
The Kindle is the BEST at not having finger prints. Keep those other finger print magnets away. I just bought mine: http://bit.ly/nHTEm
the nook will look nice with my wii
Attractive
Be interesting to see if B&N joins tomorrow, the $8.99 book price war that Target joined today:

I would be interesting if Wisconsin would drop the stupid f*cking minimum markup law so I could buy some of these $8.99 books!!!!!
i see potential in me actually owning this.
That thing looks awesome, I can't wait until the year 2096 when it's released in the UK.
Or 2196 when it's released in Australia.
And I'm looking forward to cursing every time I see one when I visit my relatives down south in the U.S..
or next century in Italy. :-(
If it's sold through Best Buy, they accept foreign orders, but still need a US delivery address... I'm mobilising some US friend to accept the delivery and post it on to me, minus the receipt and packaging to avoid import tax.
As it's also got Wi-Fi, shouldn't be a problem to use overseas too...
As a long time Kindle 1.0 owner, I must say, I might convert to B&N.
Same here. Although, the nice thing about ereaders is that my 1.0 Kindle doesn't feel old. At all. Unlike my smartphones which feel old after 1 year. My Kindle still feels perfectly enough. But of course this B&N does sound street. I don't feel like I NEED a new ereader, but it wouldn't feel bad to have one.
so is it e-ink/oled or all oled or all lcd, I don't see that mentioned anywhere
Uhhh...That's why it's a rumor. Duh!
OLED? At that price? Not a chance.
Welcome to the social... we've been waiting. :D
Awesome! The biggest thing with the kindle is its 7:1 contrast ratio. This looks far higher than 7:1 contrast ratio. To put that in perspective, newspaper has around a 10:1 contrast ratio, and most paperback books have around 40-50:1 contrast ratio (the whiter paper, not the darker paper in some paper back books). That was the biggest thing that detered me from keeping my Kindle. Way to go B&N
The ePaper part probably has exactly the same contrast ratio as the Kindle. They all use the same spinning charged balls technology from the same companies.
this would be awesome. i'd be way tempted to get one of these suckers. at last something to push e-ink to the next level. competition = good.
Gizmodo says it will have a dual display. The top is standard non-touch e-ink and bottom is color multi-touch (I'm guessing capacitive LCD or OLED)

No way they're putting an OLED screen *and* an eInk screen on the same device for $259
$259? Consider me seriously interested. I just hope it doesn't suck ass for battery life.
Actually, the WSJ article doesn't say it will be $259. It says it is unclear how much the product will cost and mentions that Amazon recently reduced the price of its cheapest Kindle to $259. Engadget must have misread.
I think its reasonable to assume it CAN'T be priced higher than the Kindle. At the SAME or lower price and more functionality it has a good chance. At a higher price, given that the Kindle is still too expensive, I'd say it would be DOA..
what are you talking about, the article clearly says that it will sell for $259
So true.
I just hope that the LCD's functionality isn't severely crippled, and that the LCD is smart about battery conservation. This format/layout has INCREDIBLE potential, if a new, STANDARD format emerges that includes text PLUS audio/video/pictures inserted into places, (in some instances playing automatically when the page turns, in some places not playing at all, unless the user taps the screen, etc.) this WILL be the revolution that makes these devices no longer niche devices. Very exciting stuff indeed!
Are there any other details in the subscribers only portion of the WSJ article?
I think this will be the "Must Have" gadget for the holiday season.
What's reading... ???
Pending an official announcement - I'm ready to buy! I've been disappointed with the Amazon and Sony offerings. Sony seemed to have the better devices and Amazon the better book selection/distribution. It appears with B&N's offering we'll get a great device and book selection. An open standard on the books and a connection to Android would just be bonus ;) Where can I order?
A guy goes into B&N and asks for a "Nookie Reader"...
"That would be in the magazines section, sir ..."
An Englishman, an Irishman, and a Scotsman walk into a bar.
The bartender looks at them and says "What is this - some kind of joke?"
Sony is going to have to drop its prices at this rate. Probably to $179 and $249 for its two main models. Good news all round.
If it plays interactive fiction games, I will begin to worship Barnes and Noble and I will go door to door trying to convert others.
Heres the full article to WSJ

Ugh....just search on Google and the top link will show you the full article.
...it is alright bright star.
I really need to see this in a photo of some sort, rather than a publicity render, I have no idea what the scale of it is.
I really would love to invest in an e-reader, especially if I could get books from multiple sources. But really have no sense of how big it is compared to the kindle or even a normal book.
The WSJ article says it has a 6" ePaper display. The Kindle has a 6" ePaper display. From the picture, it looks like the LCD occupies about the same amount of space as the keyboard on the Kindle 2, so its probably *roughly* the same size.
what the hell...we don't want your shit
I hope it has removable storage.
meao
What OS (custom, linux, android, other)?
What are the other specs?
THEY DON'T KNOW!!! Dumbass...
