SNES / Sega Genesis USB cartridge adapter now available for pre-order

Looks like our old friend, Matthias -- the developer of the USB SNES cart reader -- is back on the scene, and this time he's going commercial. His newest project, Snega2USB, adds Sega Genesis, read and write for battery-backed SNES games, open source firmware, and up to four gamepads to the homebrew fave of classic gaming fanatics world o'er. This is a work-in-progress, but all the pieces are in place to have all orders met on the December, 2009 street date. Pre-orders will be taken until October 31 for $90 in the United States or €75 in Europe. Video after the break.

Very interesting.
Now let's see how many folks actually understand what's being done here, shall we?
I see what he did there.
This is inconvenient and overpriced.... but I feel nostalgic.
its just an interpreter and the emulator is doing all the real work
did i win?
A circuit board??? That thing looks about as durable as a fart underwater.
What's that sound? Oh ... it's Nintendos legal team preparing to visit....good luck on this
I don't think they'd bother.
actuialy nintendo and segas patents kinda ran out about 1998 so gen1 to gen 2 have been legial to make all in one's of for a while lol
This is DCMA exempt.
2. Computer programs and video games distributed in formats that have become obsolete and that require the original media or hardware as a condition of access, when circumvention is accomplished for the purpose of preservation or archival reproduction of published digital works by a library or archive. A format shall be considered obsolete if the machine or system necessary to render perceptible a work stored in that format is no longer manufactured or is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace.
There are six exemptions BTW. -
I think Nintendo would be a lot happier with people using this versus downloading roms illegally.
Nintendo will only be happy if you pay for the games on virtual console. Any other way and they will be indifferent or litigious.
@ Smoke_me_a_Kipper , Wolfticket
Wouldn't that mean that now that the game's available on Wii/VC, it's once again illegal to do stuff like this again?
How cool is this?
Very.
ROMs are nice, but I have actual cartridges that I own; they are ace- and making them functional again would warm my cold, cold, cynical heart a little.
it brings back memories, SWEETTTT
I miss using my Sega Genesis after the power supply went south. I foolishly tossed it away, but I still have a number of cartridges around. Maybe if this guy sold it for $50 I'd consider it.
you can buy an nes snes and sega all in one for 50
at game stop
I get what it does but seeing as almost every single cartridge has been dumped, I'm just trying to figure out the practicality. I've owed many SNES/Genesis backup units in the past and do think it's a cool idea. Justifying why someone would get this I guess is what I'm getting at.
90 dollars would be better spent towards a used Wii with homebrew. Chalk this up for waste of money product of the year.
this would be so cool for someone with good casing mods. I want one! and at 90 it isn't so risky
Why bother spend money.. just get a dang emulator and save yourself the hassle of digging those old cartridges and blowing the heck out of them.
This is useless. Who uses cartridges these days anyway.
Millions of DS owners?
What is the best handheld ROM player? I want something portable that doesnt require me to carry carts.
Your PSP/PSP-2000 or DS/DSlite/DSi should do just fine.
Why not just buy a Dingoo A320? It's a perfect device for all old-school gaming.

And why hasn't Engadget reviewed it yet?
(I don't work for or have any affiliation with the company -- I just bought it from ThinkGeek, and it's 1000x amazing)
AWESOME! Here's my plan:
1. I'll buy a ton of these.
2. Hop in my time machine and go back to 1991.
3. Sell them all for twice as much to you guys when you would actually care.
4. Buy a small Hawaiian Island.
$5 says he doesn't realize he doesn't have a time machine until AFTER he's bought 'em. Any takers?
Actually, even better money says he doesn't realize USB didn't exist in 1991, thus rendering these useless to his target market...
@uagent
Good point, I should've read the article better but it just seemed so pointless.
$90!!!! why not just get a real snes and genesis from a thrift store or yardsale for much cheaper. Ive gotten a few NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, and Dreamcast from my local Goodwill stores for less then $15 apiece.
If this thing did NES as well, I'd consider adding it to my arcade cabinet.
