Acer neoTouch S200 reviewed, not recommended
After what seemed like a full lifetime of waiting, Acer's recently-launched neoTouch S200 is finally making its way into some reviewing hands. The fine young cannibals over at Phone Arena have just given it the head to toe treatment, and we have to say, we're glad they've done the dirty work for us. This WinMo 6.5 handset, according to their impressions, seems to be a not fully baked affair -- sluggishness and random crashing are both reported, as is a rather serious sounding call quality issue. The battery also seems to be inadequate for a workday, coming in at around five hours. Overall, the phone suffers from software optimization problems more than hardware issues. The one ray of light in all this is of course that 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, which can multitask and handle several things at once without flinching -- but it's rather hard to get pumped about it in the face of all that sadness. lame Acer
what a waste of Snapdragon
Blandphone is bland.
Well, it's not WinMo 6.5. My HTC Pure (Touch Diamond2) is running smooth and never crashed yet. And it's not a Snapdragon.
If the problems were with 6.5 how come other phones aren't experiencing the same problems?
How about the more likely solution - that Acer screwed up on the hardware front or have poor drivers on the software side. Neither of which are Microsoft's fault.
Sorry - reply went to the wrong person.
Shoot yourself please
Well if its software issues that's mainly discouraging reviewers from recommending, are they doing the same for all Winmobile 6.5 phones?
nope,
My WinMo 6.5 on a processor half the speed (528Mhz) runs smooth and fast with no crashes.
It goes to how the hardware is setup and the quality of the WinMo ROM used.
I'm running WinMo 6.5 on a fifth of the speed and its fast with no crashes. It has to be a driver issue.
But, it's an Acer. Did you really expect much more?
anyone else think the wallmart banner ad on the top of engadget's website is really annoying.. it keeps popping out at me and covers my screen.
Adblock, son...
Use firefox + Adblockplus and you will never see another ad in your browser. Enjoy :D
It's beginning to seem like only HTC has truly mastered solid WinMO 6.5 integration.
TouchFlo 3D is an outstanding GUI, and Sense is even better, but this Acer effort just doesn't cut it on any level.
Oh Well... Maybe next time - Acer.
I brought WinMo 6.5 to my Treo Pro. Much better than what HTC has done ;)
A Palm Treo Pro interface more well-done/attractive/functional than HTC TouchFlo 3D/Sense?
I have to ask - Do you happen to own, or have you even used (at length), the HTC TouchFlo/Sense UI, or are you simply defending the phone that you currently have/are stuck with?
It's cool either way, but I find it extremely difficult to believe that any mere OS update could compensate for the Treo Pro's rather archaic little 320 x 320 display in the face of HTC's far more advanced 800 x 480 unit at 3.75 times the resolution.
But - Hey! As long as you're happy...
The problem is, companies like Acer do not have a Steve Jobs to provide some common sense guidance and stewardship when it comes to product refinement. This is why, over time, no matter your thoughts on Apple generally, their products are getting more and more reliable and practical.
Reliable = Cracking plastic macbooks
Overheating iPhones
Faulty magsafe chargers (pin springs are poorly designed)
Magsafe leads melting
Noisy Macbook pro HDDs
I'm sure you love the taste of Steve Job's ass but really any complex computer item has it's problems, it's a matter of how quickly a company fixes and admits to them.
Reliable?! Who gave you that impression? The myth of reliability in apple products was smashed for me when I was foolish enough to take my unreliable iPod Touch to the Apple store on Regents Street, London and be told I had a three day wait for a ten minute slot!
It's open from 9am to 9pm...that's 12 hours...72 ten minute slots...booked solid for 3 days? the people who had shown up for their slot were STILL waiting as they ran over. It's ALWAYS like that I'm told.
Please do a search on CNET.com - Apple ranks the last among the major laptop manufacturers (HP, Dell, Lenovo, Gateway, Acer) when it comes to overall quality and number of problems.
Major4Play:
I'm sure all those instances were just the Apple products protecting their owners from doing something stupid and destroying the world.
Apple: Whatever it takes.
Truth can't handle the truth
First Off It's Gigahertz...not gertz....secondly STFU. We already know the phone sucks.
im a long time winmo fanboy, the only winmo phone that should even be uttered is the touch hd2.
i wish all windows phone go away except that one.
NO other windows phone is even worth mentioning.
everything else just makes us look bad.
why...why...
THE TOUCH HD2 HAS A CAPACITIVE SCREEN.
The problem is people who look at this phone and label it as a WinMo 6.5 phone or SnapDragon phone, which ruins their mentality on the next WinMo 6.5\Snapdragon phone. Acer failed at their flavor of WinMo 6.5 + Snapdragon, HTC didn't and i'm sure another company will do just as good (maybe Xperia X2). WinMo is like a whore it doesn't care who they sleep with they range from POS to 1337, it depends on the builder. The same people have trouble with - "All fanbois are idiots and all idiots are morons so Most morons are fanbois"
Personally...
I'm one who likes having options, and a well done 'resistive' touch screen gives me just that - the option of using either a finger or a stylus.
The stylus comes in extremely handy when wearing gloves, inputting any large amount of numerical data in a spreadsheet (Hey! it's happened), or when I tire of smudging up the display.
Of course, I've only discovered one phone with a truly well-done 'resistive' display - The HTC Imagio.
It's every bit as accurate as my iPhone's capacitive screen, lacking only multi-touch, which I seldom use or care about anyway since all it does is smudge up the screen.
Choice is Always Good - IMO
This is to be expected when running WinMo.
Seriously, why in the hell would I buy a cell phone from Acer. They've been making phones for what, like 10 minutes.
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ - Wrong!

In a few years the snapdragon will be like the Qual 528mhz everyone will complain its slow and laggy and they want puff the magic dragons chip at a blazin 2Ghz haha
Apple's strong suits are disaster recovery, cover up, and brainwashing followed closely by marketing.
oh dear
I really hope that acer learn quickly and make sure their android A1 is not under-baked, i really want that phone to be great!
Next year will be make or break for WinMo as android get stronger...........
That's an interesting point.
I'm assuming that WinMo haters will also be denouncing Android if it doesn't run well on the A1? You know, condemn the software and not the phone (despite the fact that Android runs fine on other devices).
