Dell Streak is a 5-inch Android 2.0 MID, packs 3G and WiFi (video)
Well, hello there! Those Dell MID rumors we've been hearing have finally received vindication in the form of a nice, picture-heavy leak courtesy of some industrious folks in Vietnam. What we know as of now is that there's an 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen display (with multitouch zooming), WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G WWAN connectivity, all riding atop an Android 2.0 (aka, Donut Eclair) install. A dual-LED flash 5 megapixel camera adorns the back, and there's a 1,300mAh battery to power all that goodness. See pics below and a video awaits after the break, where an old friend of ours plays with the jumbo smartphone.

" Android 2.0 (aka, Donut)"
Ermm....... you mean eclair?
Isn't 1.6 called Donut and 2.0 called Eclair?
Ginormous fail.
Look at the size of the dell MID! I don't think you can pocket this one - unless you are fat American.
so, its ok.
AHHH gross hes got two thumbs on one hand!!
Yes his hand is different from those of the majority of folks and a simple operation would make his hand look just like everyone's else, so if he decided to keep it that way it must be because he doesn't want to forget the copious gifts of agent orange with which Uncle Sam graced his people.
I always read comments and i very rarely reply.
This comment though is one of the best i've read in years.
Gracefully written with an excellent depth and conclusion.
Bravo!
+ A lot!
That's evolution for you, boys!
excuse me but you don't by any chance happen to have 6 fingers on your right hand?
Surely it doesn't take that long to turn on??
Wait for it...
That's what she said.
well i guess were all thumbs up on this one ehh?
He must be holding the camera with his 3rd arm.
thats what she said
lol i rekon he could type reaaally fast on it xD
MID? It's a phone! Pic 1 says "Phone signal: Connected to Viettel" (some vietnamese carrier I suppose) and pic 7 says "Incoming call"...
Ring ring??
Ah... MID as in "big ass form factor"?
the form factor is mid.
you can expect half of all mids from now on to have phone connectivity. the mid is now defined by screen size since all other features will overlap with smartphones and netbooks.
yours sincerly
mid definition team
There does seem to be some confusion because of the iPhone and iPod Touch, leading to the misconception that "MID" is "like a smartphone but without a cellular connection".
MIDs are not phones. that's their one distinction. not the form factor. if it performs the function of a phone it is in fact, a phone
My laptop has 3s modem that can ring - it's a phone also!!
if you hold it to your head to make calls, you can call it a phone. though since that's not its primary function, people may look at you funny
Does it come in US 3G flavor? Remember that Dell and AT&T joint Android venture rumor? Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come. Cause I'm not digging the fugly Mini 3i or whatever its called. Anyone here that rumor that AT&T is getting the HTC Hero in early 2010? I believe it was on PhoneArena. I was waiting on a comment on it from Engadget, but it never happened. I hope its ture!
In the slashgear original article it actually states that this device is labeled US which would indicate that it's really a US 3G device.
If this comes to AT&T, I'll gladly sign a 2 year. If it doesn't, and it is 600ish, I'm getting it (or will wait until the price drops te he he). But if this thing had a hardware keyboard, they could name their price (within reason).
It goes almost without saying though that this is only if it does in fact have US 3G (which it should).
"US 3G" doesn't mean anything. You need to know which radio technology it uses, in order to figure out which U.S. carrier it'll work on.
The music makes it sound like he's about to make love to it.
RIP Archos
Archos rip?
No.
Dell and Droid Does !
Nice
X-MEN 4 Rise of the DELL STREAK Mutants Meets the Androids :P
However on a sincere note this does look kind of cool many thanks for the demonstration. :)
cool video, 3 thumbs up.
An american making fun of guy from Vietnam in his thirties with a thumb more than the majority of folks, makes me whish that someone would drop some gallons of agent orange atop the home of the brave.
Just so that they could get an idea of what they're talking about.
Just so you know, we have many veterans who were ordered to work with Agent Orange or were in the area with it being spilled constantly and they to have had the same type of reactions, cancer, birth defects of their children and death. So America has had to live with their chose.
@TekManiac
Only many more of MY people suffered from it and most were just farmers and peasants who didn't want anything to do with the war. Now their children and grand children have to live with the unfair consequences in a country that is still very poor and still under the world standard for living conditions.
I sympathize with the soldiers that were only following orders and also suffered the affects of agent orange but the sympathy that I have just displayed, you could at the VERY LEAST do the same out of respect and courtesy for my fellow Vietnamese.
@BeeCAL
TekManiak was simply replying to an earlier comment by stating that it's totally unnecessary to drop gallons of that stuff on America today. Innocent Americans today have as little to do with those horrible things as innocent Vietnamese did during the war.
Now we're talking..
But can you actually make calls on this thing!?
I totally see this as a practical use phone. If it's under $300 on contract or under $600 without, it would be a great do-it-all device when hooked up to a good BT headset. The HTC Advantage did this thing a while ago, but it seemed really impractical... Like it couldn't do as much as an Android device because it had WinMo on it, or something. Oh, and because it originally cost a grand w/o contract.
The 5" screen size allows for a useful keyboard and it leaves relatively little space wasted. It's meant to be carried in a murse/purse or briefcase and used with BT, and the media push on this device could be a good differentiator. I liked the quick shot of the media player's UI. And if you hate the size, you need the Droid, simple as that. It won't be for many people, so be it.
I don't think this would be compelling to me unless it was $300. It's on the same level as a Netbook. Extra/disposable. I know there's the obvious iPhone connection, but it's the other major thing with a touchscreen and various apps. The 'value' to me is about equal, as each has different strengths.
Of course, even if it's more than that today, eventually they'll be less.
I just can't put my finger on it...one of those objects in that comparsion picture, looks, slightly out of place?
Must be the Sony...
It's a Motorola FLOP
Ah yes! that's what it is. Probably has more functionality than other current offerings.
I wonder what processor that thing is using.
Very funny.
You should try a bit of Agent Orange yourself.
I hear that the US produce the best in the world.
Nice. Has a capacitive touch screen, WiFi, and 3G.
I can't wait to see Android 2.0.
the 1300mAh battery that looks like the only thing that is gonna spoil this mid,
No qwerty = no interest. Shame
