Dell Streak is a 5-inch Android 2.0 MID, packs 3G and WiFi (video)
Well, hello there! Those Dell MID rumors we've been hearing have finally received vindication in the form of a nice, picture-heavy leak courtesy of some industrious folks in Vietnam. What we know as of now is that there's an 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen display (with multitouch zooming), WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G WWAN connectivity, all riding atop an Android 2.0 (aka, Donut Eclair) install. A dual-LED flash 5 megapixel camera adorns the back, and there's a 1,300mAh battery to power all that goodness. See pics below and a video awaits after the break, where an old friend of ours plays with the jumbo smartphone.

dude, that's gotta be puttin off some mad radiation!
Seems soooooo similar to the N900, FIGHT!!
Needs an AM-OLED.
This phone totally turns me on lol I want one!
But is it a phone though?
I'm sorry, plexus, but when you do hands in tech reviw, an extra digit is distracting. No way around that. However, this has made him famous to some of us to the point where we can (almost) ignore the double thumb.
*hands on. Who is distractng now? :)
Some maturity and respect should be issued to my fellow American's or other nationals who can't understand that life occurs as it does and people have to adapt. Mistakes are made by our forefathers and we learn from them as well. To hold one at fault for the actions of others is immature and ignorant.
Frankly I am surprised no one mentioned the fact that he and his friend did the review while sitting/standing on what looks to be a bearskin rug. That's where I tend to review all my sensitive secret equipment.
Back to the point. I am guessing the long boot time has to do with early code release of Android. Even for early code the movement is rather fluid, a few apparent hiccups here and there I see. I am not sure I am keen on the deluge of icons from the "start menu". I hope Dell can pull it off with a good marketing campaign and pricing platform. Otherwise I think the market is not going to receive it too well.
I think I'm missing something here - is this thing actually a phone or just a small hand-held?
Just because it states 3G everyone seems to be presuming that you can make calls on it.
If it has 3G, why wouldn't it be able to make calls? Install a VOIP app, and you have a "phone".
Seriously, bits is bits. We all have accept that fact that a "phone" can use any technology that allows one to reach out and call someone. That technology doesn't have to be GSM, or CDMA.
I think people assume that because it says incoming call and lists a wireless carrier under phone settings.
My guess is data is gonna cost more than $30-$40 to prevent that.
any chance of tegra under the hood ?
Still choppy/laggy on zoom/resize... XDA will probably fix it right up though. We'll have to wait and see till production model I suppose.
XDA devs don't work on non HTC devices!
@ DELL - Release it in the US w/ AT&T 3G and I will buy it. Yes - I will carry this large slab of tech as my primary phone/MID/PIM/Media Player. Please make sure it has a decent GPS chip and it will become my EVERYTHING DEVICE. The boot time isn't any worse than most smartphones booting cold, yet the interface appears snappy. Oh... and if it can connect to a projector for PowerPoint presentations, it would be perfect. I can stop lugging a laptop around on sales trips.
PLEASE - make sure it has a standard triax 3.5mm mini jack for mic & stereo audio. And I hope that large port or slot on the side is for full-size SDHC card, not another proprietary connector. Unless that connector would only be used for a docking station.
Did anyone else notice the MULTITOUCH in the video?? I thought android didn't have that!
an MID with 3G...is this dude for real? so its literally a phone robbed of a mic/ear speaker....REALLY GUYS?
That was my point - it may have 3G but can it be used as a phone!?
So that looked like flash in the browser?? Can anyone confirm that?
I'm ready to give up my Archos 5 now...
BTW: the music is "Gates of Dawn" by Secret Garden (from "Once in a Red Moon").
Dell is being more and more serious in the Smartphone game ! If what they do is as good as their old PDA line it may be a massive player in a couple of years. I hope this one (or another one) would be a little smaller, like the HTC Leo/HD 2, but it looks like a nice try.
Android 2.0 still as ugly as ever ^^
I wonder where they got such a huge shoe made so that the gadgets would look handheld?
What no mute warning, Engadget?? Oh, and by the way, Plexus has written one of the funniest comments of all time at the top of the first page.
Apple, you have until I can buy this to make something better. Right now its between this and the Archos 5 Android (160GB).
To everybody bitching about how it's a big phone robbed of various "features" - maybe it's not supposed to be a phone first! I demand 800x480 screen, 5 inches be damned. Until apple makes me a 5in or smaller device with 800x480 res I'm going to buy this; apples and oranges dude.
@ JimScare yeah this is going to be my everything machine, too, if they manage to pull it off.
Am I the only one who noticed that guy had 6 fingers and two thumbs?
Seriously, watch the first of the video.
Seriously, read the first entire page of comments.
Dell S*it Streak you mean?
I just love how it says "Dell Confidential" as it boots up. FAIL.
dell streak? hopefully its not indicating the crap it can turn out to be.
OMG!!!!!!!!! Where do i purchase it? I want that like...next day air HERE!!
If someone was able to get Windows 7 on this... I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
looks like it will compete with ipod touch... just saying!
maybe it was just me that noticed, but did anyone else see, and with all respect to dude, his toes/feet ?... awkward..?!..
Let's hope this has BT-DUN so you can use it on 3G networks that aren't T-Mobile or AT&T.
