Geek Squad visa application approved, Best Buy opening stores in UK
We know you're worried about what could happen; we saw that Liam Neeson movie too, the one where the daughter goes abroad and gets kidnapped and only after killing 351 people does he get her back. Taking trips to Europe can be risky, but our Best Buy is old enough and responsible and can take care of itself, so we're okay with it taking a trip to the UK next year... even though we don't know exactly where it'll be landing. It's been talking about going for so long it'd be a shame to say no now. Yes, it'll be packing its blue shirts and yellow name tags so everyone will know what it is, and once it gets there sometime next year we're sure it'll call and tell us which franchise location will be first. So until then just try not to worry -- and maybe sign it up for some self defense classes or something.

Hehe, the Geek SquaD CHARGES $250 TO INSTALL AN ANTI-VIRUS - thaT IS already pre-installed in the machine.
They also charge lik e$300 to set-up your home network......
LOL you might want to check your facts! Along with your spell check, and caps lock (LOL). For one, a simple virus instal would cost $29.99 as is the same for any piece of software. Also you can get better packages like the advanced security and performance for about $100 that includes installation of the software, Setup and updates of the software, optimization of the machine, and restore disk creation. wait where is that $250 coming from? I laugh at your ignorance. BTW just because there is a trial of Norton( Kaspersky FTW), doesn't mean they will charge any different from installing any other virus protection software. You save maybe five minuets from having to install the actual program files. They will still make sure it is setup, updated, and working. And in home network setup is NOT $300, it does obviously cost more for in-home, there is on average a $100 in home charge, but the setup itself is not that bad. Maybe if you are setting up a server, or an advanced network you could run into more charges, but for the average person, they can do a lot for a fair price. I will recap : check your facts before ranting online. I will say this in a language you understand: YoU FAIL Epi callY cASE CLOSE D
+1 toddp73 - People are just jealous there is a store this large that offers products and services to the average consumer. Before you go on a rant do some research. And for the others up top on the reply list the Best Buy store is focused at selling average - middle high end products to average to middle/high class consumers. They have specialty stores that offer your high performance and basic HIGH end products.... openly stated on their website for everyone who questions this (magnolia, pacific sales, audiovisions, etc...)
I was under the impression that the UK already had Geeksquad via Carphone Warehouse? I remember seeing a sign in the window of a store on oxford street a couple years ago when I was there.
Me too. Was going to say that PC World has them but that's some 'Tech Guys' bollocks.
Same thing though - overpriced unnecessary crap, preying on the clueless.
Best Buy already own half of Carphone Warehouse, it was hinted a while back that they wanted to set up Best Buys but clearly the Geek Squad was easier to set up first.
rip firedog
Next we can hopefully have that 'Black Friday' thing you guys always get in America!
Umm, except that we only get that because it's the day after Thanksgiving. It's traditional start of the Christmas shopping season in the US, partly because most people have a holiday or take the day off (because it's a Friday sandwiched between a holiday and a weekend), and largely due to the fact that retailers have latched onto it to jump-start their holiday sales with promotional items intended to lure customers into their stores.

Have existed in the UK since March 2007.
Oops didn't read the URL instructions properly.

This is a good thing for people who like to buy consumer electronics. Best Buy sells larger household appliances, too, but primarily sells computers, music CDs, digital cameras, and that sort of stuff to the average consumer, but this is one more step in the homogenization of the world and the global effort in the process of transforming people in the Anglophone world from citizens to consumers.
gosh, that best buy looks an awful lot like the one in muncie, indiana...
anyone wanna back me up?
Gooooooooooooooo... EAGLES!
They've also just opened a store here, in Guadalajara, México. Prices are not too expensive but not too cheap either. (except for scribblenauts, which was put in the "my life in pink" games for girls section and was like 15$ cheaper than what it was supposed to be ;)
Actually, Best Buy is opening their first European store in Turkey next month. http://www.dealerscope.com/article/the-next-stop-best-buys-international-expansion-turkey-according-report-sunday-410017_1.html and www.bestbuy.com.tr
Dear U.K.,
We're sorry.
Love,
The U.S.
Can't sympathize enough with our brethren across the pond.
Yeah yeah, Best Buy, blah blah. But when do we get Fry's opening over here? ;-)
Please put your stores in city centres, so we don't have to put up with a bloody hour long trek to a soulless retail park in the middle of nowhere like it is for most PC Worlds/Comets.
Fellow Americans, what's the customer support/advice like with Best Buy? Cuz with PCworld and Currys it aint good. Alot of their staffs dont have knowledge of many products.
Is it the same with Best Buy staffs?
Depends on the store to be honest. Some stores have smart employees while others...not so much.
You seem to be missing some of the facts, Best Buy are merging with CarPhone Warehouse, Carphone Warehouse are spinning TalkTalk (Their internet/phone network) off as a seperate company so large Carphone Warehouse stores will be becoming Best Buy Europe stores.
Couldn't be worse than PC World/Currys Digital stores with their "Tech Guys" same kinda thing stupid underpaid idiots carrying out repairs on your computer equipment.
It's far more likely that CPW, if re-branded, will be called 'Best Buy Mobile' - same as the concessions in US Best Buy stores that are overseen by CPW.
This is OLD news The Register was talking about it May 2008

Did you RTFA?
"It's been talking about going for so long it'd be a shame to say no now."
If you're sending Chuck Bartowski and the guys over, make sure he brings Sarah with him, OK?
He's not going to pork her, Russ.
Aren't you gonna, GO for it?
very late on this.... http://www.bitterwallet.com/best-buy-is-building-up-to-launch/19889
Despite the reference to Taken, that looks like Chevy Chase in the picture.
You are correct in that being Chevy Chase. That is from National Lampoon's Vacation. Chevy's right is Anthony Michael Hall...
Look kids! Best Buy... Parliament.
Wikipedia
With the recent 50% acquisition of UK-based mobile phone operation The Carphone Warehouse's retail division, Best Buy announced that it would open branded superstores in the UK and other European countries.[5] Best Buy will first open stores in the UK, with plans for up to 200 stores eventually, although the initiative has been delayed until Spring 2010 by the state of the retail market.[6] It is also considering purchasing UK rivals Kesa Electricals (owner of Comet), DSG International (owner of Currys), or both.[7] It is unknown whether these stores will rebrand if acquired by Best Buy. The first two Best Buy stores in the UK will open at The Junction retail park near Lakeside Shopping Centre in Thurrock Essex, and near Southampton at Prupim’s Hedge End Retail Park. [8] A 10 year lease has been signed for the Lakeside store with 50,000 square foot of retail space, while the Southampton store will cover 35,000 square foot. In total 20 locations are planned for 2009 which will all be big box format, however the company is looking for a flagship store in Central London in a prominent area such as Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Street or Regent Street.[9][10]
It's unlikely they'd be allowed to purchase DSG as they're already about the biggest consumer electronics group in the UK so, with the power of Best Buy behind them, they'd represent to strong a single organisation to be permitted by the Competition & Monopolies Commission (or whatever exactly their title is).
Buying Comet might be plausible though.
But, to be honest, I don't see them doing either - the sizes of stores that Best Buy are planning for the UK are a step up from the majority of Comet's Or DSG's portfolio.
They're meant to rival the Currys Superstores that DSG have, of which there are currently only 3 in the country.
SELF-DEFENSE CLASSES
vs. self defense classes
(it's a compound adjective)
and this would be nice too:
it'd be a shame to say 'no' now.
vs. it'd be a shame to say no now.
and the use of the semicolon in the first sentence is probably superfluous.
thank you.
Do geek squad special agents in the UK get a license to kill?
They are building one at the Lakeside retail park in Essex. should be open in the spring next year.
Well as I work for Geek Squad Uk can tell you that the quality of guys n girls hired has really fallen since we entered the carphone stores!!
We used to have to be well trained and experienced techies now we just glorified sales guys and show people how to switch on a phone or laptop. Things will only get dumber with BestBuy opening up.........."yes sir you open your fridge door like this.........thats £30 please"
Saw a store in West London near White City Side. They are affiliated with Carphone warehouse
Perhaps it's just me but with everything that has happened in the last two years with the economy I'm more enclined than ever to purchase from an independent electrical retailer like a Euronics store. My local one, Dalzell's of Markethill looks like it's about to go online which is nice to see http://www.armaghelectrical.com
