What's with all the soliloquies? I simple thought it was rather funny...
The central store is more convenient until you want something that the central store wants to restrict you from getting, then it becomes a huge problem. By only having a central store Apple has made things easy ,but simultaniously completely locked down.
Been a Mac User since the beginning so yes, I’m old. I also use Windows side by side and I like it too (sorta). In the end, it’s the simplicity of the Apple concept that keeps me on board. MS has been emulating or otherwise copying the Mac OS ever since 3.1 and they haven’t stopped and they will not stop. The iPhone design was to create at least 10 basic functions that most anyone could use without a manual. It’s the infrastructure that has made it successful and not simply the device itself.
I’ll admit the iPhone currently pales the competition in terms of the actual device since the Zune and Pre offer far better battery life and other emerging technologies. Apple has always been conservative with their hardware upgrades. Oh well, I’m not so sharp these days and the Mac is simply easier and that’s why a lot of folks have moved over. A quick look at the Apple stock and comparative sales clearly demonstrates this trend.

You do not own a mac. Stop lying and stop making up stories to seem cool to all the pc guys. One thing I hate the most on this site, is people claiming they have tried or owned a product and they really don't. All the crap you brought up in your little rant is easy to make up because because of course everyone who has a mac love to "video edit." People may have ranked you highly, but I see through your bs and I have read your past posts. You don't own mac products, you act like you do to try to make a point.
"riffing on the abundance of gimmick apps for the iPhone" is ironic considering the AISLES of crap apps/games/software for windows at any computer store. PCs are BUNDLED with an abundance of gimmick and crap apps for that matter. Pot...kettle...
why do some people become fanboys? what causes that?
Look, the app store has plenty of great apps, but you're lying to yourself if you think this short is false. There are tons of stupid applications that get accepted, while great ones are randomly rejected.
I liked this one, to be honest. Made me smile.
OMG..People here still arguing who beats who!
Let me just sum it up for you guys, something between Apple and Microsoft. Android is a super worthy contender, but people here only cares about Apple and Microsoft..sighhhhh...
In the desktop and laptop department
Design: Apple wins hands-down.
Coolness: Another way to pronounce Mac, is 'Cool'.
Marketing: Apple wins hands-down.
Utility: Win7 might just score a tie here.
Performance: Apple's OS lightness and responsiveness is just like their mascot 'Snowy'. I tap that! Shall see how win7 stack-up against the cat later.
User friendliness: Apple still wins, there is still a little more setup and tinkering than I would like. Apple still 'Just work---Most of the time, definitely not all the time!!'
Iphone vs Winmo
Design: Apple wins hands-down. WinMo and others is just playing catch-up now...I doubt they will ever manage to (HD2 by HTC might be 1 worthy contender, but the interface is overlay by HTC's own proprietary Sense-UI, so no credit for WinMo.....IMO only).
Marketing: Apple wins hands-down. With the way they built-up the hype...hmm, Undisputedly King in this department!!
Utility: Microsoft scored by having multitasking ability and lots of Professional apps. WinMo currently hold the most useful apps which allows user to do all kind of things. Unlike apple app store, which carry mostly crap-apps (seriously!). These apps might be targeting squarely at school kids who are one of their major customers.
Performance: Microsoft scored. So far, the Snapdragon and the sheer amount of RAM in all latest WinMo is eating their apple 'whole'! Until Iphone snappily gets itself a new processor, which I doubt, since they just very recently updated the processor in the 3GS.
User friendliness: Apple wins, sort of.
Summary:
So far, Microsoft manage to only score in 2 department IMO. The performance of WinMo, and their utility. Which Apple score the rest.
But as far as a smart-phone is concern, I need it to do the things that I need, quickly.
There is no multitask in Iphone but WinMo allow for multitasking, which means I can do this:
While at work, I minimized my ebook reader (1st app) which I always open, and opened up my company intranet on Opera(2nd app), download an Word file(3rd app) from my boss's folder, launch an excel file(4th app) and copy those figures into a calculator(5th app) I just launched, compute it, and paste it into the excel, and at the same time, I tally the date and time-line set by Mr Boss against my own Calendar (6th app), and jotting some note on my notepad (7th app). And maximized my ' eBook reader' window every chance I got in the meeting room to continue the thrill.
Regardless of what you guys think, I am a super Fanboy of Mac, who really dig WinMo, and Diss Iphone, coz iphone is getting very boring now, and it does not do what I want, first of all, it does not even try to target a customer group like myself, it apps appeal to kids more than working professionals.
@Ryan you have it completely backwards. In 1984, the '90%+ market share holder' is the tyrant. By definition (and logic) the entity holding 10% of the market cannot be the 'join us or die' power.
What has succeeded in recent years in this country is the dark side convincing its followers that the other player is evil. This is similar to us believing France (or fill in any country you/we hate) is actually our enemy and a threat to us. Or, that ____ (fill in the political party that is not yours) is actually our enemy and a threat to our way of life.
Unfortunately, the end result is stagnation. The entire is inflexible from all the in-fighting, such that our true enemies in politics, business, technology, creativity, etc, merely have to bide their time while we destroy ourselves from the inside.
