SplitFish Dual SFX Frag Pro pairs button-enriched mouse with 'fragchuck,' ships November 10
For those of you not paying attention in class, SplitFish is a peripherals maker that, true to its name (or half its name, anyway), offers PS3 controllers that split the left and right hand controls into separate parts. The Dual SFX Frag Pro, its latest, comes with a 2,000dpi laser mouse to tempt those last few PC gamer holdouts to the dark side of consoles, and a three shoulder button-equipped directional pad for navigation. What can we say, it looks weird as hell, but the more we thought about it, the more we wanted to get our hands on a set to see just how games played with this unorthodox control scheme. Should you share our interest, you'll also want to know that pre-orders are being taken now for a cent under $90 in the US or a penny short of £80 in the UK, and shipping starts November 10.

I'm a PC gamer, and as interesting as it looks - after the amount of I've spent on this PC rig, I don't fancy buying a PS3, plus this for a selection of FPS games that dont completely appeal to me.
Just my thoughts. If I had a PS3 and not a melting rig, maybe, maybe I'd invest in one... Perhaps.
Your loss. The PS3 offers more that just video games.
Computers offer more than the PS3 offers, so shut the hell up.
Wow,a little defensive about your computer there avengeryarr? Relax man.
lol
Maybe this is jsut me, but my hands cramp up after about an hour and a half of gaming with controllers, so I really prefer a mouse and keyboard.
Also, If I'm already going to invest in a powerful pc, why not take advantage of it, and save some money by not spending another $300 plus on a console and equipment...
That thing just looks mental, I can't imagine that it's very easy to use.
The whole point of SplitFish peripherals seems to be that you actually CAN play with both hands behind your back.
I think it's designed for use by the chap who unveiled the 5" Dell Streak in the article above.
Damn. This is friggin' ugly.
Head designer probably went on a strike.
Strangely, I could see this becoming easier to use with practice, although, if it gives the full advantages of a mouse in FPS games, then it will serioulsy alter the balance of online matches. I was a little worried about the same thing happening on Live when that keyboard and mouse adaptor came out, but luckily, it was crap!
Those thumb buttons on the side of the mouse are no good for people with larger hands. You could not use this for more than an hour at a time before your thumb seized up. The left controller also looks too complicated.
It's not bad actually. I have the PS2 version, and really, the only downside is that it is too light and a bit small, but most mice are. It works well, and I images the PS3 versions are a step up.
I've used the wired one on my PS3 and it works like a charm. Probably 80-90% PC-Mouse-like accuracy.
Only gripe about it was the directional buttons, and the price ofcourse.
I think I'm gonna fragchuck.
I wish they'd sort out the pricing so the UK doesn't always get shafted. $90 = £54 - NOT £80.
I own the "Original" release of this (The Corded One!!!) and for what it is worked really well. Made it much easier to navigate in FPS games. I always said it should have been wireless since the Wired version had only a 6ft Cable.
If it works well, this could make my original go the way of eBay!
I have the corded version for the PS3 and it improved my game dramatically. I have fairly large hands, and the only issue I have is with the Digital D-pad placement... the mouse layout is perfectly fine. COD4 and Uncharted2 play great, and Fallout 3 was finally playable as a FPS that I didn't have to rely on the VAT (limb auto targeting system) that slowed the gameplay down drastically. Also, there's an extra trigger on the chuck that, when held, tightens up the mouse control for easier accuracy and headshots. A great little add-on feature that makes it all the better. I may have to look into this just to cut the cords on the one I have.
The mouse looks cheap, not like the PC gaming mice.
I've long said that a motion-sensitive nunchuck would be the ultimate PC accessory for FPS games.
Think Call of Duty. Mouse controls direction, firing, weapon changes, secondary weapon, crouch/stand. Nunchuck controls movement (analog movement too - not just on/off like keyboard keys). Tilt left or right to look around corners. One trigger button for 'use' and another for jump. Would be great.
I had the wired one for the ps3, but it never worked that great and sold it on ebay a few days after i got it.
I look forward to the reviews.
I'm with Golds here, I remember when this was vaporware on the old myresistance boards.
They certainly had some teething problems, which I'd like to think they've learned from. But don't assume anything any more.
Remember it being a YMMV thing, some people like it, some don't adapt as well.
I use the current wired version of the controller. It's amazing. Once you get used to it, you'll dominate. My friend tried it for a few games and hated it. He said it doesn't help at all. Then he passed it over to me and on CoD Modern I had a 52-2 kill/death ratio. He was a believer after that. You do have to "tweak" it a bit by taking it apart to fix the buttons. There is considerable "play" from when you push the R1/R2 buttons down to when it registers. It just takes a few Q-Tip sticks in the button holes. But once fixed, it's pretty cool. I used to be a PC gamer, but everyone I know moved over to the consoles. I refused to play FPSers with crappy analog sticks, but this changed that perspective. The keyboard/mouse is still dominate, though console developers won't utilize it on most games. The FragFx helps bridge the gap.
And for those who say it is cheating. Well, you obviously are just upset that I can systematically mow you down with this. Stop being a sore loser, get a job, buy one, then talk your junk.
it is cheating if there is no level playing field. it is not whining. basically you are saying you can't play well unless you have an unfair advantage. sounds like cheating to me, not your ability. we are all playing for fun... it only takes a few who take it too serious to ruin it for the masses. why is this any different to a modded controller with a turbo button?
I own a computer and PS3 but I don't play FPS on it because of the controller, if this thing wasn't so expensive I would consider it.
90 dollars US means it'll be at least $100 Canadian, sigh.
hmmm this or the fragnstein.. the fragnstein still looks better in terms of build quality.. and that nunchuck is sure weird here.
err.. fragchuck rather.
I knew I should have patented that idea a long time ago.
It boggles me that this has taken so long for someone to create this. I was boasting this idea to me friends years ago when the 360 launched and CoD2 came out.
A mouse in one hand and an analog stick in the other with buttons all around.
It didn't take a genius, but I suppose most peripheral companies just figured there wasn't a market for this type of thing until recently.
I for one would probably sink back into FPS's in a major way if I went out and bought one of these bad boys.
(That is of course, assuming that it works well with the games I'd want to play.)
it was out before the 360 came out. there was one available for the PS2
I'm still waiting for a Dualschock3 where the right analog stick is replaced with a trackerball..
I own the wired version of the FragFX, but I still haven't got around to trying it out.. I really need something like this, as I just can't get used to aiming with the stick, it just sux bigtime..
Why didn't they make it bluetooth so you don't need the extra receiver?
@ssoltero: SplitFish already made this controller (although wired) for the PS2 long before the 360 launched.. So it's nothing new..
give it to me for the 360 and we'll talk.
@superdre
no kidding about using BT.. all these guys (splitfish and bannco) use the standard wireless 2.4GHz spectrum, meaning if someone walks in front of you, you freeze because the controllers lost connection. LAME. Never had that issue with BT 2.4GHz.
"2,000dpi laser mouse to tempt those last few PC gamer holdouts to the dark side of consoles"
Our will is strong, our devoutness resolute, our numbers are legion. We are PC Gamers, and we will not be defeated.
another way to have an unfair advantage online. what is the point of even playing without a level battlefield? remember this is a game, not real life.
Does this work with a PC? It seems like there might be enough buttons on it where you could actually use it for MMOs to some extent...
Well, it appears from their FAQ that it won't work on a PC
If you want to use something like this on a PC, I suggest looking into the Fragnstein. It works for both PS3 and PC and is much better than all of the FragFX products made to this day combined.
A left-handed say you thanks for nothing.... MAKE A DEVICE DUAL, not only for RIGHT-HANDED!!!!!!!
Please.
