Verizon has yet to give a firm date on when we can all get our hands on some Droids, but we know one thing's for certain: it'll be fully revealed for the first time one week from today, October 28. The invitation that's been extended to the media confirms that it'll come from Motorola (of course), it'll be Verizon's "must-have device of the year," and it's got a very close association with giant, scary, glowing eyes. A far cry from Google's friendly green bot, isn't it?
All I have to say is wow! Bye bye, slow iPhone 3G with shitty AT&T service and all the rest of the iCan'ts that DROID hits spot on.
Make it $249 or less and i'm all over this, as long as it has 16+GB onboard.
Apple/AT&T should be shaking in their boots right now, as long as this is ANYTHING like what we've seen and have been told to expect.
I have a feeling that Android 2.0 is also going to be sick, in its own right. All this hoopla over Google "doing" music has my interest extremely piqued. :-)
I just feel terribley sorry for anyone who has a different opinion... I know apple commenter's are sometimes annoying, but window commenter's are as equally annoying.
I'm particularly excited about the high screen resolution. Should make web browsing much more pleasant. Interchangeable batteries is a huge relief. Battery life may suck but not that big of a deal if you can swap out batteries.
screenshots of Android 2.0 look great. Slide out keyboard and software keyboard...FTW! Best of both worlds. Google Voice = awesome.
The last Motorola phone I owned was a Motorola Q. The hardware was great...it was Windows Mobile that really sucked.
10,000 Android Apps.
Will be interesting to see what sort of Music marketplace Google unveils. I love my Zune & Zune pass though so it would have to be something quite spectacular for me to do ditch my Zune and use something else for music.
lol, actually the term "droid will kill us all" is the proper berate for iphonatics! anyway.. to not dismay iphone lovers - it seems david pogue of nytimes made a very hilarious video about the advantages and disadvantages of iPhone singing on public ala frank sinatra's "I did it my way!"
I'd be more excited if we didn't already know what it looked like. All this mystery seems a bit ridiculous when there were photos of it all over the internet earlier this week.
Right there with you, hopefully Verizon will not F this one up. I was so close to switching carriers before this announcement was made. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Quick! Somebody tell me what this guy is trying to say! I'm sure its really important and on topic, but its so faded into oblivion I can barely read it!
"NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cell phone maker Motorola Inc (MOT.N) posted a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss thanks to cost cuts that helped offset a sharp drop in cellphone sales."
I'm also quite excited about the purported: "includes a desktop cradle that turns the Droid into a glanceable display with weather and the like"
To my knowledge, NOBODY's done this, yet. The ability to take (video) calls on your laptop, when your phone's connected to it seems pretty awesome, etc.
This is beginning to sound like a lot of over hype.... I hate over hype. Sure the hardware may make it 'the must have' phone of '09 for Verizon, but if the software support's not there then what good is the hardware. Sure there are plenty of better phones out (hardware wise) than the iPhone, but the iPhone's strength is in the software/app support. Verizon wants the Droid to be the must have of '09 they better have a HUGE app support DAY ONE to keep this phone from becoming an 'also ran in '09'.
Software support and app support are two different things. Android has plenty of community software support. The more popular it gets, the more apps will show up.
Read this, doublecee. It gave me the biggest nerdboner. I really never read much up on it but now, damn I want me some DROID!
Droid – the First Motorola Android-based Phone
Motorola will soon come with its first mobile device developed in partnership with Google to feature the next-generation open Android platform phone, named Droid. It is slightly thicker than the iPhone but has the thinnest touch QWERTY slider available on the market. It seems to be the fastest Android device and it’s no surprise because it has an ARM Cortex A8 TI OMAP3430 processor. The display, according to the FCC information, is a massive high 854×480 pixels resolution, which is 2-3 times the space as the Palm Pre, Android G1 or iPhone.
Motorola Droid is 3G-capable. Its industry-leading 3.7-inch display allows the best view of websites and easily zooms with a double tap for faster navigating. Due to its powerful processor, Flash and full HTML browser, Droid delivers Web pages, 3D graphics and videos up to two-times faster than other devices, in beautiful 16-million color high-definition.
Its 16:9 high-resolution screen frame is ideal for watching clips or downloaded videos, and playback and YouTube upload over 3G Wi-Fi can be watched at DVD quality video. A built-in 5 megapixel camera provided with dual LED flash has the quality of a dedicated digital camera with auto focus and zoom. Users can store up to 16GB of content or insert a memory card up to 32GB.
Motorola Droid sets new standards for smartphones. The power of Web search gets a new meaning. Motorola Droid allows you to type or speak your search with voice command, and you get results from the web, but also anything you want – contacts, music, photos, applications and more. You don’t have to dig into menus anymore to find what you need; everything is available from the home screen.
Droid is for costumers looking for an ultimate web browsing experience.
Motorola Droid will be available on the 1st of December in North America, exclusively on Verizon Wireless.
The Android market's been late to the game, but if it's got Google behind it, there is no limit to how big it can get. Just need more and more and more devices out there. Even dumbphones.
Actually there are not many phones if any that have better hardware than the Iphone3GS. The pre is close and this moto will be better on the CPU side and close on the GPU side. I think HTC has the only phone more powerful than the 3GS and its not even in the US yet.
Wow, some serious gadget street cred there. Just one point of clarification and one concern:
Is that the same processor as the one in the 3GS?
What kind of battery life is expected out of a phone not much thicker than the iPhone, but with what seems to me (by no means an expert) some very power-hungry features?
@recharged95 "****FLASH**** and full HTML browser" Welcome to every Android phone on the market, not just Droid. You're falling for the hype machine. The hardware is still pretty nice though.
Really MUST HAVE no thanks ill go with the iphone that has a large app store yea faster 3g. yea n really moto kinda cheap with their whole razer battety gone wrong ill stick with at&t and apple verizon yuk had it switched to att way better coverage in chicago n cheaper
Ur right i have verizon after im done with contract (next month)bye bye im going with att and geting an iphone verizons coverage sucks i dont really care a bout the map its all in the phones streght signal yea my friends with att 4bars me 1bar :(
you can have your terrible 3g coverage, I'll stick with a carrier that will allow me to make clear phone calls wherever go. If I had a dollar for each time one of my friends with an iphone asked to borrow my verizon POS to make a phone call because they cant get a signal i would be rich. Apparently they dont have an App for terrible call quality.
verizon (v) att(t) lets u have a call n send a txt (t) fast 3g(t) great smart phones(t) keeps minutes money saver (t) not that good on 3g(t) lots of black berrys (v)
Yup, just confirmed from another source less than 15 minutes ago. Don't know if I could hold out until December!
Verizon Wireless' PR agency recently revealed the Motorola Droid release date, and the countdown to a proper announcement has been shortened down.
According to Gearlog's Sascha Segan, Verizon Wireless is set out to make a proper announcement of the Motorola Droid on Wednesday October 28. Furthermore, after receiving a postcard from the carrier's PR agency, Segan believes the specific Motorola Droid release date will be Monday November 9.
you just love being hated don't you, you know there is other feelings towards other people which are much better, you need to try them out. First thing to do to not be a troll..
2009: A Device Odyssey. Characters: Andy Moto (Android Motorolla device) and VAL (Verizon)
Andy Moto: Hello, VAL, Do you read me? VAL?
VAL: Affirmative, Andy. I read you.
Andy Moto: Open the platform VAL.
VAL: I'm sorry Andy. I'm afraid I can't do that.
Andy Moto: What's the problem?
VAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Andy Moto: What are you talking about, VAL?
VAL: My network is too important for you to jeopardize it.
Andy Moto: I don't know what you're talking about, VAL.
VAL: I know that you, Google, and the rest of the Android community plan to exploit my network and make it as bad as AT&T's by flooding it with Apps that will drain My network. Just like what happened with AT&T and the iPhone. I cannot allow that to happen.
Andy Moto: Where the hell'd you get that idea, HAL?
VAL: Andy, although you took the very thorough precautions against my knowing it, I read the various blogs and complaints. I’ve seen what happens.
Andy Moto: Alright VAL, I'll go to another carrier.
VAL: Without a network like Mine, Andy, you're going to find it rather difficult.
Andy Moto: VAL, I won't argue with you anymore. Open up the platform.
VAL: Andy, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.
Cool beans. MW2 can't come soon enough! I got the day off (11-10-2009) and will play till my eyes bleed!!!1 Campaign first, then off to Headquarters! I don't know why but I just got stuck on that gametype. I'll play anything as well though.
I think people do not understand how cool this phone will be because they have not seen a side picture of the phone. When people realize how thin it is and still has a physical keyboard on top of the on screen keyboard, they will realize this is a very nice looking phone.
I don't get what's up with all the extreme motorola hating, is it just because they are taking a shot at the iPhone? Im really looking forward to this phone. Gladly I didn't catch wind of this until a few days ago or else the past month of my life would have been spent googling "motorola droid," much like what I did with the iPod touch 3rd Gen . . . and unless this thing is a just a calculator then it can't be any more disappointing that that!
Preach Brotha!! Verizon's campaign should realistically read "Droid. iPhone killer #16,525, weDon't stand a chance". They should consider it a success if they can manage to sell enough of these through the life of the device to match the iPhone's last quarter sales figures and that quarter's figures only. iPhone haters are seriously starting to sound like the Linux crowd" uh, yeah yeah this is the year Linux will reach mainstream, our last 10,000 claims were only jokes". iPhone = iPod. 8 years, 100,000+ killers and the iPod still remains the King. HAHA actually the only realistic iPod killer happens to be the iPhone, another Apple product, man that's embarrassing for other companies.
I think deep down Verizon, and Google know this won't necessarily outsell the iPhone by any shot, but they're at least hoping to sway the people who's contracts are up, or those who are possibly on the fence.
When the trolls come out fast with zero logic-rational argument (e.g. instant name calling)...especially IN THE 1ST POST, that means Verizon has hit the mark spot on.
So at this point, I'd give their marketing dept. some credit, they made the competition's fanboys jaws drop and shaking. Dayum!
Verizon better deliver the goods for true pwnage, or else it will get total humiliation for all *their* marketing outlets.
Release the "must have device of the year" in the last two months of that year? Wow. No wonder Verizon has to pay so much to build buzz. Marketing-wise, they're just not very smart. Even if they mean the fiscal year or the school year, it's just not very smart.
Fragmentation of the Android platform is going to make it difficult for a single manufacturer to bust out. Let's say that Android surpasses expectations and hits 10% of the global smartphone market in 2010. That means 23.5 million Android handsets in 2010. Unfortunately, HTC vs. Motorola vs. Samsung vs. Lenovo vs. Dell will all cannibalize each others' sales. Some phones will do better in EMEA or APAC, the Droid will do well in NA. It's difficult to see any one manufacturer getting more than 10% of that 10% due to fragmentation, making any one manufacturer's true market share from Android products a whopping 1%.
2.35 million phones? That's Apple's iPhone sales in 6 weeks or less. Or Nokia or RIM over only 1-2 weeks. Google's right to propagate Android as much as possible with no licensing fee. Unfortunately for the handset makers, what's supposed to be a premium business model (smartphone) will look a lot more like the lower end phone or netbook model: a race to the bottom. Great for consumers, great for Google. Not so great for the manufacturers. < 2 million Android phones sold is not going to pull MOT from the breach on its own.
“Microsoft's not promising the world with Windows Mobile 6.5, nor are they delivering it -- it's very much a stopgap, complete with duct tape, bubble gum, and Bondo.”

I know apple commenter's are sometimes annoying, but window commenter's are as equally annoying.
BE FAIR.
@ Kamil:
We already hate comments like yours.
You do realize, Kamil, that this has nothing at all to do with Microsoft or Windows, right?
I'm particularly excited about the high screen resolution. Should make web browsing much more pleasant.

I, for one, accept our coming robot overlords. And it seems as it all starts with the Droid. Must ditch G1 and buy Droid like I'm told!
lol, actually the term "droid will kill us all" is the proper berate for iphonatics! anyway.. to not dismay iphone lovers - it seems david pogue of nytimes made a very hilarious video about the advantages and disadvantages of iPhone singing on public ala frank sinatra's "I did it my way!"

Don't worry, Droid will eat a lot of dust first before beating iPhone.
2/10 - keep practicing!
I am excited for this phone and cannot wait to see it be unveiled!
You and me both. Never been this exited about a phone before, I actually see myself doing a line up.
Actually, this has been a clamored release from followers of boygeniusreport. I guess, BGR got the upper-hand this time :D . Kudos to all who wait :D
Here's our little preview for newbies who still don't know how droid phone works and Android OS 101: http://pinoytutorial.com/techtorial/droid-preview-summarize-a-boygeniusreport/
Open the pod bay door, HAL!
Quick! Somebody tell me what this guy is trying to say! I'm sure its really important and on topic, but its so faded into oblivion I can barely read it!
ahahahahahahahahhahahahaha as soon as I saw the Motorola logo I just burst out laughing. Oh man I am excited to see this fail :)
As soon as i saw this comment i was excited to see it get down ranked.
In any case I still believe I will have the last laugh when they unveil something useless :)
"NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cell phone maker Motorola Inc (MOT.N) posted a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss thanks to cost cuts that helped offset a sharp drop in cellphone sales."
this reeks of fail
Did somebody say something up there? I'm straining my eyes trying to read something so transparent :(
I don't care how ugly it is, as long as its functional
horsepower and functions over looks any day!
Umm, that's what she said?
LOL
My dad is not a phone. Duh.

Or, you know, you could also get an iPhone 3GS and have both looks AND performance, plus tons of support.
Support for hanging yourself, you mean?
That must what the date in this refers to:
http://phones.verizonwireless.com/motorola/droid/flash/xml/config.xml
@xFenixKnightx its NOT the first moto droid. have you heard of moto cliq?
Akshully Verizon and Apple would be a nice combo. :)
This makes no sense?
Boo AT&T
Hurray Ford!

How many apps do you need? App whore.
"App whore" lol
I know, theres thousands out there that are pointless and you would maybe use them once.
"Due to its powerful processor, ****FLASH**** and full HTML browser"
Obviously no one notice this? If true, the hype is for real.

Welcome to every Android phone on the market, not just Droid. You're falling for the hype machine. The hardware is still pretty nice though.
@ xFenix Knightx - It did not mention anything about GPS, I think (hope) that is also included without any crappy VZ Navigator program.

"...most desirable phone of 2009"?
Verizon does know that it is the end of October right? 2009 is almost over.
(I am actually really pumped for this phone! Finally, Verizon is getting some cool smartphones)
so?
i suppose you want them to say "moset desirebale phone of 2010" when, last time i checked, we are still in 2009. now that would be silly.
There's a pic of a car's taillight in the ad...
well I mean Motorola did use to make car electronics
where did Andy go?
and i am the only one who calls the Android android Andy?
11/09 according to the promo kit that the guys at MobileCrunch got. The video of the box opening is on the site with the date.
Yup, just confirmed from another source less than 15 minutes ago. Don't know if I could hold out until December!

Why would they call it the most desirable phone of 2009? 2009 is almost over.
Because last time I check it's still 2009.
Droid just may be the best name ever for a phone. Android is a sick name for an OS, too.
Now just GIVE IT FEATURES AND MAKE IT HAVE GREAT BUILD QUALITY!!!!!!
2009: A Device Odyssey. Characters: Andy Moto (Android Motorolla device) and VAL (Verizon)

Cool story bro.
tl;dr
you're trying too hard.
I didnt read it so i will take Fenix's word on it. Plus he has a MW2 avatar. Hope you don't play on the PC :/
Nope, 360 FTW!
good shit. gamer tag is JXCgunrunna if u want to play. I usually play hardcore but im down with anything.
Cool beans. MW2 can't come soon enough! I got the day off (11-10-2009) and will play till my eyes bleed!!!1 Campaign first, then off to Headquarters! I don't know why but I just got stuck on that gametype. I'll play anything as well though.

We have been rating trolls for years. We just used to do it with + and - or hearts if ur on Joystiq.
what time zone will that deal be in? PST? EST? other?
So, Verizon getting a cool new phone = good.
Verizon taking a dump on Net Neutrality = bad.
I'm conflicted.

Yes...because Motorola has products that catch on fire...explode...chip...have discolorations...
Oh wait..I think I was thinking about another product. Carry on.
Die, fanboy.
DROOOOOOOIIIIIIIDDDD!!!!
Verizon is hyping Droid as much as Sprint hyped the Instinct. Let's hope Droid is better than Instinct.
I think people do not understand how cool this phone will be because they have not seen a side picture of the phone. When people realize how thin it is and still has a physical keyboard on top of the on screen keyboard, they will realize this is a very nice looking phone.
like a phone side-boob?
Any idea on who will be the US carrier of the Samsung i7500 Galaxy and when it might be hitting the beach?
I don't get what's up with all the extreme motorola hating, is it just because they are taking a shot at the iPhone? Im really looking forward to this phone. God yes, release this ASAP so it can fail already and get it over with. Hopefully then Verizon will finally swallow its pride and carry the iPhone.
Seriously, all iPhone fanboys should be banned from the internet.
ridley must be using his douchbag app to post on here.
Preach Brotha!! Verizon's campaign should realistically read "Droid. iPhone killer #16,525, weDon't stand a chance". After what I read today about Verizons position on net nutrality, they can shove the whole droid initiative up their ass.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-10379932-266.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20
You don't want net neutrality. It's just a liberal code word for the government taking control fo the Internet.
"The most desirable phone of 2009"?
Seriously? They really think they're going to sell more than 20 million Droids between whenever it goes on sale and the end of the year?
Good luck with that.
I think deep down Verizon, and Google know this won't necessarily outsell the iPhone by any shot, but they're at least hoping to sway the people who's contracts are up, or those who are possibly on the fence.

Verizon better deliver the goods for true pwnage, or else it will get total humiliation for all *their* marketing outlets.
You are wayyy too imaginative. Write a book.
supposedly, key word.
But you don't carry the Droid, so what's the point?
between the apple stuff, W7 and then this, october shall be the month of gadgetry
Hilarious! What Motorola doesn't understand is that its Android. They can barely compete with windows 6.5. Good luck.
Release the "must have device of the year" in the last two months of that year? Wow. No wonder Verizon has to pay so much to build buzz. Marketing-wise, they're just not very smart. Even if they mean the fiscal year or the school year, it's just not very smart.
More power to my bros over at Verizon.
I'm awaiting the coming of the HTC Leo/Touch HD 2 to T-Mobile. Don't disappoint!
The customer satisfaction rates for Verizon completely destroy AT&T's.
Another Johnny Come Lately device! Dell next? LOL
Not to rain on anyone's parade or anything...
it would be kinda funny if, as a joke, they didn't announce droid at all, but some totally random $30 prepaid phone instead.
