Microsoft Windows 7
Microsoft Windows Vista
A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Just slightly better.
Wait until 10.7 ;)
@cgpublic: Wait until Windows 8... Here's another review snippet while I'm posting again anyway:
"Indeed, the new Windows is not only the best operating system that Microsoft has ever produced. It is arguably the fastest, most intuitive, and most useful consumer desktop OS on the market today."
Mac. Number 1 in customer satisfaction.
@Darren: Any post-Windows 7 release figures to back that up(wouldn't want to befuddle this with old OS's, now would we?) Here's another one for the road:
"Windows 7 presents a stable platform that can compete comfortably with OS X, while reassuring the world that Microsoft can still turn out a strong, useful operating system."
@cgpublic: Interesting that you chose Vista to claim that it copied OSX, considering that the very next release of OSX after it(Leopard) started using glass effects(I wonder where they got that idea?), gave the ability to restore the system to a previous state, or a system restore as it were, and gave a feature they called "spaces" that let you have multiple desktops. Hmmm all those ideas sound vaguely familiar(threw in spaces because, while it wasn't copied from windows, it certainly was already in pretty much every Linux system out there)
Oh, almost forgot to post another review:
"Windows 7...is competent and functional due to internal improvements and the user interface is attractive and good for productivity."
cg: you own a Mac.

Stupid people drive the Civic????
Have fun with your 12 mpg Lamborghini...
Right now the Engadget crew is laughing hard at all of the commenters who've taken the bait. So predictable.
Funny.
re think your commercials APPLE...you are not winning anyone with these LAME-O commercials.
Hi, I'm a Mac, and I'm NOT a dick, despite what you may have seen on TV.
P.S. I often boot into XP.
if you boot in XP maybe you sure get a PC. Why waste money on a Mac.
Eh, not a fav, i like it when they make actual points about the advantages to a mac, instead of just assuming everyone thinks windows sucks :/
Yawn. Wake me up when Apple officially releases the Mac OS for computers other than their own.
What for? I have a Mac and a PC with 7, and had to use the Mac recently. Geez was that awful, getting back to OS X. Glad that I can use Windows again. Before 7 though I could understand why one wants to use OS X...
Like we give a shit. Go away.
apple hasnt had rubbish ads for years now, this is just the icing on the cake. How they still exist as a company I do not know.
I do like how they fail to mention the fact that the new apple OS has more bugs than MS last 3 os combined.
DOn'T Trust A Hoe, Never Trust a HOe, DOn't Trust a Hoe, DOnt Trust Me, neowneow noew noeow noew noeow. (just thought i'd get it stuck in ur head to)
....this has to be a joke. apple's OSs were HORRIBLE until 9.0. about as many programs as the commodore.
Hey now, show the C64 some love. GEOS represent!
I'm usually a fan of those Apple ads but that one was really lame.
Psh. This ad not only tries to hard, but is pretty untrue. Sure, Vista caught flack for lots of drivers not working, but there are plenty of older (and fairly recent) Macs out there that Apple is continually leaving behind whether it be with their new chips or their new OS.
Then there's the whole thing about Windows 7 being a great OS.
Yeah, just like Snow Leopard doesn't have any of the problems that Leopard had. The hundreds of problems it does have are all brand new.
*runs*
Anyway, Apple's commercials are pretty funny, they're just pretentious and wrong most of the time.
"Hi Im a Mac"
"and Im a PC...hey mac what happens when you log on to guest accounts in snow leopard?"
"......................(grumbles) user accounts get deleted"
"sounds like a problem"
(this typed on a MBP running 10.5.8)
Republican type smear ad. Failed then, failed now.
Wow. Apple compared to the GOP. What's up? Its like they're losing their fan base.
Yeah, these ads are such failures. Just look at the Apple stock - it's in the gutter.
They should have had 80's hairdo PC promoting the new release. Not boring noughties PC.
The problem with this advertisement is that they're not even using solid facts to compare Mac OS X with Windows 7... they just resort to what Microsoft may have said in the past. Who knows, maybe Microsoft did a good job this time.
good god. that is typical apple. so typical that I gave up on these ads since a year ago. They're rehashed crap that does nothing much slander. one out of every thousand commercial made by apple actually has something about why apple is good.
Apple needs to be on fail blog for its commercials
not even slightly funny. Completely lame. They even got the order wrong, Windows 2 to Windows 95, WTF?
because 3.1 was perfect.
3.1 was perfect? that's pretty funny. Now it's coming back (bad memories), stupid random crashes all the damn time. Then again, the equivalent Mac OS at the time (6.x?) was literally twice as slow lol. Using those old school Macs they would take forever to log on and forever to log off, but hey, at least we got Oregon Trail, right? ( I don't give a crap that half of my party died on the trail, I survived and that's all that matters, screw the rest lol)
Apple is just jealous of the publicity
Steve Jobs has nothing better to do
Yeah, I'm so glad that I had enough sense to not upgrade my macbook pro to "The worlds most advanced operating system finely tuned". Crisis avoided!
second that. I have no reason to upgrade until Snow Leopard is as stable as Leopard...by then 10.7 "Meerkat" will be out with tons of new horrible problems, but none of the ones that Snow Leopard has!!
Will "Meerkat" delete your files like Snow Leopard?
I honestly don't see why I paid 30 dollars for Snow Leopard. I gained nothing from it, absolutely nothing. If the changes they made were groundwork for the future, why didn't they just wait until the future to release them? Only reason I can see is because they had nothing else to do in the meantime and it's not like Apple to go a long time without charging people for a new os, I mean up until Leopard they were doing one a year, at 129 a piece.
The one program I thought I would gain something with was Final Cut, and I still gained nothing. Final Cut seven isn't even 64-bit yet, so what was the point of upgrading both? Luckily I only paid for one of them...
hahahaha...
windows has had it's share of problems.
I have always been able to trust that it won't randomly delete data out of my main account if I activate and use the guest account though.
I don't think I ever saw even ME do that one.
That's pretty clever. I know lots of "ordinary" people who have a kind of here-we-go-again attitude to Win 7; they're always told that new is better, and it always breaks stuff that used to work fine. (Kind of sad as it's clearly better than Vista). This ad plays off that *brilliantly*, and I could see it doing well outside of the Windows geek demographic (who honestly thinks these ads are meant for Engadget readers, eh?).
Wtf? This is actually one of the best ads I've seen from Apple.
Seriously, apple seems to have forgotten the 90s if theyre going to try and knock the versions of windows from that time period.
Apple seems to have forgotten that their own latest OS is still going around deleting users files by itself, as well as other problems
The ad reminded me of MacOS 7.5, yes. But I'm sure Apple is betting that most potential switchers don't remember much about it.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Pure Fail in horrid commercial form!
The ad is true. People buy new versions of Windows just to have less problems than the previous versions. Basically a version that sucks less.
OS X in the other hand delivers innovation and useful features as its selling point.
So for your average user, what were the useful features in Snow Leopard? 7 has homegroups, the new taskbar, and Aeropeek to name a few.
Hai guys, I'm a PZ and I love Windows Vista service pack.. er.. I mean 7! I love my window shaker (which is as useless as a fridge in Antartica), weaksauce éxpose, and lame Dock ripoff! Take that applezzzz!!!!!
PC has some sick shades. Anyone know where I can get a pair of those? Please don't say Sunglass Hut.
Sunglasses hut. (i didn't say it, i typed it ;)
