trying too hard
Yeah, am I the only one totally turned off by the ridiculous smugness?
They've just got old. I think apple need to rethink their adverts. I'd buy a Macbook Pro but I'd install windows as my main system and dual boot alongside Mac OSX. I just prefer windows.
@Kris agreed. I love the form factor but dont care for the OS. I'd put a nice skin over that fruit on the back as well.
really.
whilst i find that ad hilarious, i think youre right this time that mac is trying too hard now.
Yeah but when you produce an OS you fix and enhance on the last OS you brought out. Which is the point of this advert. After all isn't that what apple has done with OSX year after year. Isn't that the point all together. They've made an obvious point that they are guilty of doing themselves.
@Kris120890 I totally agree with you on the fact that apple's ads are looking a little too old, but your comment regarding buying a MBP to use windows on it totally sounds unreal....
I am a windows user all my life and only own one mac (vs more than 3 pcs) and have windows on my mac, but over the last 3 years I owned the mac, I hardly used windows on the mac. Mac is just made for mac os, and the near perfect integration of hardware to their software makes it a pleasure to use for my regular @ home activities.... but I don't think it will replace my pc either.
pal :)
even though i'm a PC I did find the first Mac commercials funny. However the latest ones (including this) have gotten old....kinda like the "imma let you finish" Kanye West phrase...
And I mean.... come on.... Microsoft invented FUD !
Using FUD to spit on Microsoft kind of feels wrong somehow :-P
Apple = losers
Oh well let the poor kid (Apple) play, the US is the only country where they can legally run those ads (this kind of nonsense is illegal in Europe for example).
3% Worldwide market share...poor guys...
@pal
I like the Macbook Pro form factor. The only thing I would want is a better Graphics card. If another manufacturer makes a unibody type thing with windows 7 I would buy that. I just like the form factor.
No longer interesting. C'mon, same advert idea since 2006. Chop Chop..
agree with Kris, the macbook pro hardware is beautiful, but 1) i don't want to pay that much at all 2) i don't want to pay for an operating system i'm not going to use 3) i don't want to have to pay for 7 separately, whereas it would be included in any other laptop's price.
When a version of OSX comes out that doesn't have this problem of Apple Douchery, I'll buy a mac.
I'm pretty sure badger badger badger is the only one trying to hard here....
hes been spamming comments all day...
test
that was so lame... *cringe*
There is no doubt that Apple makes good products, however this is beneath them and they shouldn't have to stoop to this. This just seems so awfully childish and bitchy.
Actually, they are not trying hard enough. They try to make fun of Windows for supposedly being the same thing over and over, and yet, Apple is not creative enough to find a new idea in over 3 years (first commercial started May 2, 2006 as per Wikipedia) and do the same thing over, and over, and over, and ...
Where is that Apple innovation and creativity that we keep hearing about?
Trying way too hard. These commercials were good at one time..that time was 5 years ago. They aren't funny any more, they strive to make a point, and rarely do they even do that any more. They're trying to argue that Windows is the same thing, well then what was Snow Leopard?
It's time to let this ad campaign die, sadly Apple won't let that happen. Not sure if that's good or not. On one hand I like how they're starting to look ridiculous in their own commercials, on the other hand they annoy me.
@Kris120890
Try HP's new Envy 15 with Windows 7. It's pretty much an imitation MacBook Pro with more expansion options, a better processor and graphics card, and lacking an optical drive.
@chris
It lacks the graphics I want. I like it but 4500HD just isn't what I want.
The smug from Clooney's speech is about to hit the other smug system! Get everyone inside!
God help us.
If the mac os was so great all this time, why are they only at 10% market share? Oh wait a minute, its because it was a terrible os, until they finally caught up when they released tiger.
@Detox Chapel
The ads were trite and lousy. Are you going to keep flashing figures based mainly on the sale of a mp3 player, phone and mini apps as indication that really stupid ads should go uncriticized?
Scrap that last comment. it has HD 4830 from ati. But the new generation has what I want.
engadget or just mac?
agreed. probably spent a small fortune of fanboy blood money on writers for a cheap joke. apples image continues to astound me.
@CH3BURASHKA
Dick jokes and "leaves a bad taste in my mouth" should never be in the same post.
I have guess that, at this point, even die hard Mac fans are getting sick of these childish ads.
apple should talk
i guess snow leopard brought all of leopards problems and more !
btw it's time they hire another ad agency, this got old years ago
@detox ok we get it they are making money, that doesn't mean their commercials are good, true, or effective
Logical Fallacy: Post hoc ergo propter hoc
It's funny because they didn't say A WORD about their own OS. This is basically free advertising for Windows 7.
Good job, Apple. Microsoft probably really appreciates the support.
Great commercial, funny (and true) as hell =D
Judging by all the upset fans here, I'd say this hit the weak spot for MASSIVE damage!
"Judging by all the upset fans here, I'd say this hit the weak spot for MASSIVE damage!"
Yeah dude, a weak ad that tried really hard to say "hey look at me, I'm saying something" more than "hey this is what I have to offer", really reeked MASSIVE damage.
Outside of you and Detox, almost no one here thinks these were worth the time wasted producing them.
same dumb commercials. same boring macbook designs. same iphone designs.
anything else im missing?
When was the last time Apple put out a commercial about OS X's features? But who want's to hear about it's features? Just look at how Mac is so much cooler than PC LULZ!!!!
Insecure much?
I agree. What got me is them bringing it back to Windows 2. Isn't it around that time that their inability to function right as a company caused them to hit rock bottom. Hmm...
Yeah. They should give up these commercials. They are real under the belt cheap shots. Ooozes of sore loserness.
agreed.
@Orrett Junior
"Yo Snow Leopard, I'm really happy for you, and imma let you finish, but Windows 7 had the best pre-release of all time!"
Yup, this is the same company that will be supporting Windows 7 on their Boot Camp.
It says something when the service pack and updates in the first 6 months of its release are larger then the original installer disc.
I doubt Windows7 will be like Vista with regards to overhaul kernel updates of that scale, but a Knowledge Base full of registry settings instructions is inevitable.
Without complicated registry settings, Windows7 might start to look like the 'other' guy. God forbid!
"Yo Orrett Junior, I'm really happy for you, and imma let you finish, but I heard you like internet memes, so I put an internet meme inside an internet meme so you can be annoyed while you're being annoying, because I have the best comeback of all time!"
ok this is a bit too much Apple. Really. Grow up.
At least MS is trying to connect with it's consumers. Apple all you do is take cheap shots at MS and tell me how kool it is to have Mac.
I didn't buy Macs because how cool they look. I brought them because they were realizable 24/7 working machines. Now Apple I don;t care for what you are producing...but you are neglecting me, the consumer. Maybe Apple needs to rethink their purpose and start listening to their core customers. If anything, take a lesson from MS and start listening.
To you who buy a macbook pro to run windows...nuff said. Not worth the effort. goodness.
I like that this ad goes all the way back to the '80's' but doesn't acknowledge the fact that Mac OS was worthless and awful until 10.2 was released in 2002.
Is there a way to downrank a topic with stupid content such as this one? Engadget get on this..."this is my Idea"
"Yeah, am I the only one totally turned off by the ridiculous smugness?"
Nope. That is why I sold my Mac and never looked back.
it distresses me that such brilliant creative, comedic minds are being put to use bashing other companies product's, products that many people worked hard to create.
This is hilarious solely because Snow Leopard totally broke just about everything from Leopard, which all the apple users, engadget included, gave a pass.
Epic. fail.
They are definitely trying too hard. Apple is such a waste of a company. The Iphone = terrible, iphone = awful, Macbook Pro = worthless, iMac = huge paper weight. Does anyone even buy this crap?
Same commercials for the past 3 years, same message everytime: "Look how bad Windows can get, get a Mac. That should be your only motivation!" What has Microsoft done? "Look at all the things you can do with Windows! Look at the new things we made for you. Enjoy!" Was there any anti-mac sentiment in the latest ones? Who's looking desperate now? Apple doesn't even mention why they are better. Do the commercials seriously say what they can do better than Windows? Instead of pointing flaws, start pointing at strengths. "Not Windows" isn't one of them.
These adds are getting at little tired, maybe because they are part of the mix with iPhone/iPod/iPod Touch adds, if it where me I would start phasing in adds that talk about value proposition, those customer satisfaction figures with OSX talk volumes.
How much is your time worth?
Oh, c'mon! I love these commercials! They make me laugh! ;D
Agreed, I mean same with one commenter as well. Even if I got a Mac I would just end up installing Windows and toying with (Snow) Leopard Mac OS etc. All a big push to help stimulate sales really. I dont know who their kidding :(
Ohh and for al lthe Win7 fanboys, try installing some of your old warez/apps/hacks etc and see what happens wont be loving that Win7 feeling then. I will stick to the burger at least you know that tastes good (see Japan Win7 burger if you dont know what I mean).
Respect to all.............................
XP SP3 for LIFE............................................ :P :P :P :P :P
I agree that they turn people off to the Mac, and I think they should concentrate on what they bring to the table.
The irony is that Windows 95 (which Apple scorns in this ad) was far superior to MacOS at the time. I was a Mac user in the early 90's and gladly switched to Windows when 95 came out.
These commercials were kinda funny when they first started making them. But I have to agree with a lot of the other comments. Three years of this, and now it just feels like Apple is just making fun to make itself look "cool".
Definitely trying too hard. These ads cross the line from being snarky yet comedic to being smug, mean spirited, and unfunny. Downright "douchey."
I use both Macs and PCs on a daily basis, and i own (and love) an iPhone, I have no beef with Apple.
But why is it that Apple can't simply promote its own computers and OS without bashing Windows every single chance it gets? Then bashing it with lame rhetoric just spreading misinformation and blowing up every single fault ever found - user error or otherwise, easily remedied or otherwise.
I realize its not all that uncommon for ads to go after a company's competitors, but they usually still focus on promoting their own product more than cutting down another. These ads amount to little more than mudslinging in a political campaign...ad frankly they are just as annoying and counterproductive.
A lot of people like to point out Microsoft's "laptop hunter" ads crying, "look look! they did it too!!" but there's a key difference. Microsoft spent the majority of the ads promoting products using their OS and all the good things about PCs (keep in mind, Microsoft is NOT a hardware manufacturer like Apple, and the fact that they DON'T have absolute control over their products like Apple does is the leading reason for many of the faults end users wind up wrongly blaming on the OS...if Apple were anywhere NEAR as open ended and had to worry about millions of possible hardware and software configurations...they'd be in the same boat. Don't believe me? Try to install OS X on anything but a Mac specifically built for it).
About the only negative thing Microsoft showed of Apple the the laptop hunter ads is the fact that their laptops are often considerably more expensive for the same or lesser hardware, and purchasing a Mac is often more about the trendy image than anything else...is any of that completely untrue? Apple even lowered its prices and specifically asked Microsoft to stop the ads as a result. That's what I call effective advertising.
Apple isn't so great and popular that it needs no advertisement. They should jump at the opportunity to play up all the amazing things about their computers instead of just putting down Windows all the time.
Perhaps therein lies the problem...there's little a Mac can do that a PC can't - or can do any better than a PC (as a graphic artist/visual effects artist/film editor, spare me those bullshit arguments).
I think the commercials are funny! I've been building pc's for 10yrs and finally got a Mac last year. I don't touch pc's anymore, unless someone wants me to fix them. Macs have ZERO problems!
Are these commercials really convincing people that Mac computers are the better choice? It seems as though all they are doing is making themselves seem like villains. They are still underdogs they should be using that to their advantage instead of making themselves seem like bullies.
Yep.
At least the PC Guy didn't borrow the Mac Guy's (Guest) jacket. Otherwise, he would have been erased.
I love how they give OS2 shit...where I work, we have 5 computers still running OS2, for one specific system, yes...it's slow, but it still works and has no problems...The mac that I had when I was 9, same age as the OS2 system we're using at work...died 2 years later, from word processing and marathon infinity. I think Apple needs to think before they start giving windows shit.
Ahhh... the smell of desperation.
this is kind of like the white house lashing out at fox news and giving fox news even higher ratings
One should realize that when a company used an agressive advertising such as this one. It only means that their rival is really a threat.

So much for the mocking and the bill gates look alike nerd guy though.
Flame shields up!!
have your avatar scrubbed and brought to my tent
According to my knowledge, water based pokemon are the best defence
I like how the ad focused completely on Microsoft (without providing any facts), and ignored stating the benefits of switching to a Mac...
@Badger_badger_badger
It's kinda like the creationist argument for intelligent design. And cult-like followers to boot!
I wanna date your avatar.
Because there are no benefits. They can't even argue the cost of virus software anymore since Microsoft provides it for free
I like how mac stayed practically the same over the years. :| nothing new here move along.
@Onelove
I know huh, kinda like the rest of *nix and its security model. Where are all the viruses and security leaks to be plugged?
@ Badger_badger_badger
So how does a lack of facts size up against blatant misinformation? See the analysis on Microsoft's Laptop Hunters ads, for a case in point.
God these adverts are boring now.
ehhh,...i think this was the lamest one yet
Only this time, its for reals
Yeah there was no real substance, just an ad hominem attack.
Yeah. They were effective at the start but its no longer about selling devices its all about being an ass. That said I bought an iPod touch Wednesday and it broke 10 minutes after I opened it. I had to return it and get a replacement today. I regret it but I will stick with it until this time next year.
agreed. I actually prefer some of Microsoft's ads now. They're so much less negative, and don't follow the same patter for 40 some different versions.
These ads really only affect the undecided people. Lots of Mac fans will be like haha yeah - that why I have a mac, but Apples already got them hooked. And by now those of us who want something more from our computers see these and are just like "ugh... give it a rest already."
But apparently that 1 percent of people who are like hahaha that's funny and therefore must be true after seeing the same type ad a few hundred times make this worth it to Apple.
So apparently Apple jsut wants new customers who have no taste incomedy... or else are just stupidly attracted to flip up sunglasses.
It would be really funny if Mac had a guest on and when he tries to introduc the guest they all vanish.
It just struck me, Apple violated a basic rule of marketing: Never say your competitions name more than your own products name. "Windows" is said 7 times (oh the irony) and the focus is centered entirely off OSX. Apple is getting really sloppy with their marketing techniques.
@Detox: That article is dated 3 days before the release of this commercial. Please provide the data for financials since this commercial was made.
They have definitely jumped the shark
@detox
Lets see that number shrink in the next year due to windows 7.
Technically, the numbers say they don't, since you're being downranked, and all the apple-hate is being upranked.
Technically.
My favorite thing that apple lover's do is show apple's profits, after they are the ones that get over charged for the product. Apple is making more because for some random reason, we're all willing to pay more for the same crap!
@Detox: Personally, I haven't up or down ranked a comment at all today, for any reason(I don't, usually). Also, I'm not really angry, just pointing out that they were talking about this specific commercial, not about any past or future ones. The effectiveness of this commercial obviously hasn't been proven one way or the other, so we'll have to wait and see what happens.
I'm a PC by day and a Mac by night, and an iPhone developer. I'm known at my day job as the office's Mac FanBoy, and even I'm tired of these commercials!
It's like the bad years on Saturday Night Live when they would let a sketch that should have been 1-2 minutes go on for 10 minutes and make me change the channel.
Enough already! Come up with something creative and new before someone makes a commercial mocking you for having the same commercials for over 5 years!
@sacapuntas: In theory, yes. But do real consumer's actually care?
Apple = Kanye West
I love how Apple users have to use charts that show profit as evidence, when just a few years ago Steve Jobs had to announce "We're Profitable!" at a shareholder meeting.
Apple is the school bully and the only way it can make itself look better is to tear into others (as in the "nerds"(microsoft)). No apple ads actually show/give info of the product and when they do they get them pulled for be misleading.
hmm.... ah yes fully agree with you guys these ads are getting too flimsy, even apple fanboys agree on that. At least MS puts forth a little effort in giving the consumer some info about their product rather then just bashing the competition with bs commercials acting like douche-bags. These low blows are going to come back and bite apple in the ass and from the looks of things its already starting to backfire. They were funny initially, i admit, but now its just too much of the same crap. they should freshen up the skit or back off.
Ad FAIL!
What is an Apple?
What's a Zune?
An apple is a fruit
A Zune is a synonym for crap
You sure wouldn't be able to tell from their commercials.
How about posting those Microsoft commercials, Engadget? So, are you guys secret lovers with Mac, or do they just pay you for bias coverage?
they posted microsoft commercials just earlier today
